From the moment we entered, we were greeted with smiles and staff that were attentive to our every need. The room was comfortable and had a small balcony with a side view of the river running nearby. It had a spacious bathroom and lovely bathtub. The highlight for me was most definitely the food......

A huge shout out to chef Wonder who went out of his way to ensure we had an amazing dining experience. That evening he prepared the most delicious fish with potatoes and it was plated so beautifully. The breakfast was absolutely delicious with eggs that were poached perfectly and the afternoon picnic he had prepared was unlike anything I have had it was just special....Wonder had put my mind at ease showing me that everything he had prepared for us was halaal and prepared with utmost care to prevent any contamination this is the reason I will definitely be visiting again and recommending De hoek to all my family and friends who are looking for the perfect getaway for a night or 2.

A birthday to remember!

We had an incredible 4 night stay at De Hoek for our anniversary. I would definitely recommend staying in the ‘more historic’ rooms. We stayed in NQ2 and will definitely be asking for that room again. It had a gorgeous view of the beautiful gardens and was quiet for some much needed rest. The room had all amenities that you would expect from a 5 star hotel and the bed was exceptionally luxurious. The staff were very friendly and professional. The food was delicious and of 5 star calibre. The menu may be small, but it ensured that the food was exceptional. Even when you order room service, the food arrives in 5 star quality. We had a lovely picnic on the property for lunch that De Hoek organised and could spend hours walking the gorgeous gardens. We will most definitely be back. The location is fantastic as you could have a lazy day and lounge by the pool and walk the gardens or explore Magaliesberg and Harties.

The property is amazing however we were very disappointed with the attention to detail of bookings and the rooms. I have detailed this in the guest feedback and do not want to hop on it again.

The food was also good especially because I am vegan and didn't have to mention it to anyone. I was "automatically" catered for.

We went for a couples retreat, only to find that a wedding was booked and not mentioned to me. The noise was on until very late. The focus was on the wedding guests, not the ones that went there for a bit of rest. The dinner was a disaster, they did not mention that there was shellfish - prawns - my partner is very allergic to that. The remote in room nr 1 does not work properly and the TV switches off by itself. The shower leaks and the water runs to the toilet area, make the new beautiful tiles slippery. The swimming pool is badly redone, plaster over the mosaics and the pool was dirty, green and the pump not working. The two day break was not restful, expensive for what we got, especially if I compare to previous visits. The service went backwards.

I have wanted to go to De Hoek for years. What a disappointment! Positives are great service (Gift and Rose), beautiful grounds and gorgeous main buildings. The negatives are the food, which has always had the reputation of being superb. The overpriced set dinner menu (R610) had 3 mains, which were lamb neck for the meat, Sea Bass and lentil curry on Friday, and a repeat of the bass and curry on the Saturday. Presentation of the food was good, but there were no outstanding dishes to remember.A Newton Johnson Pinotage, which retails at about R160 cost over R600.The famous breakfast has become an ordinary buffet with food dried out in the bain marie, and government brown and white bread as the only toast.

We were in a new room, which was small, and the dark grey paint made one feel like one was in a cave. The bathroom was nice, if dark. And the view was straight into another set of rooms from the fiddly patio. The irony was that the initial booking had been for a more spacious old room with a view.

I do hate giving poor reviews, but the signs of cost-cutting and over-pricing were too obvious. I wish had I had visited De Hoek in its hey day.

We have been visitors to De Hoek for 25 years, and have been accustomed to the very best. On our recent visit it was blown away. With the exception of a great experience at reception everything else was disappointing. Food was so-so both in preparation as well as presentation. Our room, which was spotless, was situated close to the kitchen cleanup area: noisy in spite of complaints. The bed had structural problems. To me it is clear that the emphasis has changed: conferences and large functions hold sway over romantic getaways. This place’s owner needs to come to the party, it is poorly run and definitely not deserving of the rates charged.

We booked at this hotel
Expecting top notch service and got slapped with a hefty bill, a Dark dingy room. And zero service!!!!!! The spa used rancid oil on my skin and the sheets were full of old oil marks. The staff at the spa were extremely unfriendly. The food is below par. You don’t feel special at all here and in fact it’s the first hotel we have ever walked away from in the first day of arriving. Highly do not recommend this hotel at all. Waste of money and time.

I have stayed at De Hoek on a few occasions. My wife and I were so looking forward to returning but unfortunately the hotel is not of the high standards that we have previously experienced and in my opinion has not maintained its high levels of service or quality of food. We booked the hotel in mid September and paid when booking. When booking we also requested to book SPA treatments.
After no response after a week I sent a further request, to which I still received no response - so resorted to phoning the hotel from the UK to arrange.
When we arrived at the hotel, there was no one to greet us and in fact we had to go and look for someone to register us. You would have thought that when you arrive at the gate and sign the security register that the security guard would announce you to the hotel so they are aware that you are on your way.
The SPA treatments were really good.
Dinner was very disappointing. Not the usual fine cuisine that I have experienced at De Hoek with some of the food and wine items not being available. The food was underwhelming to say the least.
There was a company conference taking place at De Hoek whilst we were staying there and they had taken over the main dining area, so we were placed in an adjacent smaller room for both dinner and breakfast. In arriving in the same room for breakfast whilst sitting there one of the conference guests was in the smaller dining room and proceeded whilst we were sitting there to dial in to a Teams Call and chair a teams meeting. We were both quite surprised that this was allowed and ended up having to move to the lounge area in order to continue with our breakfast.
After having really been looking forward to our stay, we left feeling quite disappointed and underwhelmed with the overall experience. It is not the De Hoek that we have experienced over a number of years.
Highly unlikely we will return, which is disappointing as we had our wedding reception at De Hoek, so it held many happy memories for us.

The property is well located and have a lot of potential, but we were left feeling overcharged, mainly due to the very average quality of the restaurant. If you are looking for a high-end meal or romantic dinner, this is not the place to go to. The rooms were good, although some of the furniture is well worn and a bit tired. The location of the property is excellent for hikes or to relax though. The one aspect which were could not fault was the cleanliness, and that is a big plus admittedly. We had to attend some online meetings in the morning and requested a late checkout. It was agreed, but at a ~20% surcharge, even thoug the hotel was basically empty. Overall the experience felt a bit overpriced.

We booked a table for Valentine. It was just a horrible experience from the moment we set foot in, we waited for an hour to get a table, it was another wait for drinks, we had to go to the bar to get drinks, getting food was a mission or any attention at all. Everyone in the restaurant was frustrated I have never seen such chaos in my life. Spoke to a couple who were seated next to us. They said it has been the same since they arrived on Friday they did not even get breakfast that morning. Beautiful place but what a Valentine nightmare.

Hi. Do you allow small babies to stay?
Answer from Gavin F

Hi there Thank you for your mail. Unfortunately we can only accommodate children over the age of 12 to stay with their parents. We are able to accommodate small babies in private areas for lunch (like a picnic) please reach out to me should you want to join as I need to oversee the booking procedure to ensure all guests have a good experience whilst at De Hoek. Warm Regards Gavin Ferreira General Manager

Does De Hoek offer a spa?
Answer from Gavin F
2 contributions
Hi there elmien2 Thank you for your question. De Hoek does offer spa treatments but doesn't have a designated spa - yet. We use a out sourced spa therapist that does the treatments in one of our designated rooms. If you inquire with us we can even do the treatment down at the river - which is an extra cost. I hope this has answered your question? Kind Regards Gavin Ferreira General Manager

The airport is OR Tambo International or Lenseria . It is approx an hour and a half drive away from OR Tambo and a bit closer from Lanseria . Most locals drive to this location. However it's best to contact the hotel direct for advice.
