Detailed Reviews
An unexpected surprise in the heart of Simonstown. Needed to stay overnight and found Blue Line Inn. Dean was very welcoming, even though I only arrived after 6pm. Rooms and hotel are simply but tastefully furnished. I stayed in the Deluxe Double room and it was all I needed: A comfy bed and hot shower. The only real nitpick was they only had coffee making facilities and no tea, but the owner has promised to rectify this. Rate for the night was very reasonable. Old building has been wonderfully maintained. If you ring the gate and no answer, just go to the chicken takeaway next door and they will sort you out.

Liked: The manager's attentiveness, and it was very clean, other than the rat...
Disliked : A rat ran across me in the middle of the night.
The room was very hot (It is mid summer.) I asked the manager to bring a fan, which he did, but all he had was an industrial fan which was very loud - not something one could sleep with while running, and I feared it would bother other guests too, since I could hear it down the hall. I opened the window to allow cooler air in. The window was next to an ally. During the night, a rat came in from the ally and ran across me. I had to spend time helping it out the room again. There were also mosquitos.
The water from the tap tasted terrible, but no other water was provided.
The dive school next door has a loud machine running during business hours. I would not advise anyone plan to relax or sleep in their room during the day.
I would suggest the following to improve the quality of this inn:
A metal mosquito screen on the window.
A quiet fan for hot nights.
Bottled water available free with the room, or at least to purchase.
Some measure to muffle the dive school machine noise.
Clearer descriptions to guests of what is included and what one needs to bring, or make other arrangements for.

We stayed here for 3 nights and we were not disapointed. We stayed in an en-suite which was clean and was well furnished. A good size bathroom and a shared balcony. Reception was friendly and helpful. Good location if you want to explore the cape and want to do some cage diving.

On Saturday 23rd June 2012 we had booked into the Simons Town Backpackers as we were attending a function in Simons Town Cape Town. We had called on the Thursday morning and made the reservation and availability was confirmed in the Dorm Rooms for us. We decided to check into the Backpackers on the way to our function but was meet with the worst attitude by the receptionist on Duty at 18H15. We walked to the counter and introduced ourselves and informed the man that we had a reservation. Without even looking in the reservation book he told us that there was no booking for us. We asked him to check the booking sheet, and he shouted at us telling us that there was no booking and that we must "[--] Off" This was absolutely apalling and shocking. We asked to speak to the owner/ manager and he said that he was the manager, which I found extremely hard to believe. His comment to us was that he doesnt like white South Africans and only foreigners are allowed to stay at his hotel. After this we decided it was best to leave. But I would definitely recommend that you consider other options before even considering to stay in this Backpackers.
Before writing this review, I called this backpackers to enquire who the owner was... again I was greeted with a rather rude and abrupt answer. Eventially I was told that the owner's name was Kenneth.... Kenneth I would definitely reconsider employing this person as your receptionist, let alone your manager of your hotel as I am sure you are loosing business as a result of his appalling racist attitude!!!

Whilst the location is fantastic the same cannot be said of the moody and unhelpfull staff.... I have just checked out the other reviews and note that they were written before the SA winter..
Ok so when you first step inside you see lovely polished wooden floors and a quaint kitchen,, take a closer look !! The rooms have no where to hang anything or put anything ..no shelves no hooks ...the kitchen has x 2 gas rings and x 1 microwave and x 1 table that seats 4 people ... this place can host well over 20 people ... ar you getting the picture ??! - long queues to use the stove..by which time you have melted with hunger . and no where to sit and eat communally .. I must empasise that it is cold in the evenings during June July and August so in the evening we couldn' t really go outside an use any potential tables on the balcony without fleeces and hats and gloves..The x 1 fire they have is not adequate to heat the place and is lit far too late for it to permeate around the building.. I had to ask for a blanket and we slept with lots of jumpers on.. Now for the moody staff...... Watch out for grunts when you ask for something ..the staff prefer to play on the playstation or gaze at the internet..I felt awkaward on x 2 occasions when I had my head bitten off on arrival for asking where the kitchen was !! it was a poor welcome that set the tone for the stay.. a saving grace is the video shop downstairs the owner is fab .. we took a portable dvd player and he sussed we were inhappy with the place and the poor welcome and he gave us x 3 free dvds to compensate for the unsurprising welcome we were getting... so if in simonstown vist this lovely shop!! The only thing this backpackers has going for it is the view which you will only get from a balcony room ..it is stunning.and the town is undoubtedly quaint and interestingly very colonial...the best fish and chps we have ever had came from the salty dog ... well worth a visit. .. so if you choose to stay there dont unpack anything as there is no where to put stuff take a wooly jumper or 4 in the winter and be prepared to be ignored.. also watch out for the small print of rules on the wall that are barely readable.. they dislike you drinking your own booze and will charge you... There is NO WI FI there at all which we found in all other backpackers we stayed in at the cape..there is an intetnet facillity there but it is over priced comp[red to a local internet cafe and remember that it is hard any way as a guest to get on as the staff hog it ...
The owner does not live on site but the x 2 staff members do, and they get up at 9am ish and I heaqd them moan on a number of occasions about being woken up by the guests as thier room is near to the kitchen ..interestingly when the owner is around they seem to pick up dusters and polish the bar... thats thier work done for the day untill the owner dissapperas..
to Sum up it was the worst place we stayed in in SA and not typical of the warm and friendly atmospheres you can easily get in backpakers along the cape coast AVOID IT!!

I have been to many hostels during my travel years but this was definetly the worst. Not because of the accomadation or cleanliness but because of the owner:
I had to switch room during my stay because they were overbooked, so Keneth (the owner) told me to put my lugguage out in the lobby. When I came back that night, my suitcase was taken by some travel organisation. No biggy. . . I told him to please take care of it and he promised that it will be back by the next morning. It wasn't!!!! It arrived late at night that night. I asked Keneth for compensation since I couldnt use medicine, hygiene products etc. We agreed over the phone but was notably angry.
When I used the kitchen that night he STORMED in with HEAVY ALCOHOL on his breath and physically attacked me and CUSSED at me. His colleague had to force him out with physical violance.
I was with my girlfriend and she was very scared that night. This is really sad. I wish this hostel would close down and get organized. I dont easily dislike people but this man should be removed. I am angry and sad and all the compensation in the world couldnt make up for this.
DO NOT GO TO THIS HOSTEL!!!!!!

The Dutch Owner is a jerk, stuff is his friends. All they do is to get pissed and rip you off.
They give wrong information and directives. Such a pity that a potentially nice place is ruın by an IDIOT. Never stay there, better to stay on the beach with the penguins.

+1
I booked a dorm bed for two nights and it was a great deal. 160 Rand per night and had the whole room to myself. There were only about 2 other guests in the hostel while I was there. It was about a 20 min walk to boulders beach to see the penguins which were awesome. Great location and friendly staff. I don't see how people could write bad reviews for the place.

stayed 3 nights in a 4 dorm. my bed and pillow were infected of BED BUGS. woke up with extensive and painful, itchy bites all over my neck, shoulders, hips, and right arm. the manager and staff changed sheets in the room and sprayed the mats following my complain. said they were spraying all the time to get rid of the bugs! so they were aware of the issue.
asked to be switched room/bed, as i had paid my stay already. no, the hostel was full. next morning i had more bites on my neck, and one on my face. these were BED BUGS bites, not mosquitoes or other insects. had to take antihistamin medicines and buy repellent spray. emptied one bottle of repellent on the mat and pillow. so bad was it.
awful stay. stay away from this hostel. no free wi-fi, no breakfast. disgraceful.
simon's town and the cape are nice places to visit, but make sure you avoid this backpackers.

We stayed 3 nights. This backpackers is close enough to walk to the train station and to walk into Simon's town (it's not a big place) and walk to the Penguins.
It's clean and staff helpful, finding us an adapter for the plug sockets as ours didn't fit and helping us get back to Cape Town for our train. It's a basic place, but when all you need is a bed that wasn't a problem for us.
The backpackers has access to a local Taxi who can run you down to Cape Point for a few hours if you don't rent a car.
We ate out each evening so can't comment on the kitchen, but all in all a nice enough place to stay in a lovely fishing town.
