We stayed here on January 31st in the downstairs bedroom (Kambaku). It was an excellent stay. The bedroom was large, clean and comfortable with a fantastic sea view. Breakfast was first class. We had such a great welcome from Nikkita, by the time we left we felt like we were leaving a friend. Excellent all round. Would happily recommend.

My husband and I had booked in to the Aha Quayside Simons Town hotel from Friday 7 April, departing on Monday 10 April. We booked via Bookings.Com as our usual booking agent. We left this hotel – with as much haste as we could muster – on Saturday 8 January (please see flight home). This was 2 nights early. This hotel is an absolute disgrace. I wish I could find something nice about the hotel – oh wait, there’s the view (one of the reasons we chose the hotel) and there was one employee who fetched ice for us. But that’s it. Oh and I did request an early check-in – we arrived at 11:30 and were “checked-in” (if you can call it that) 30 mins before the actual check-in time. Those are the only good things I can say about this hotel. My husband and I thought this was an easy choice, having stayed at other Aha hotels previously – most notable is Shepards Tree which we have frequented many times over the last few years. And have enjoyed. So, the state this hotel is in and the fact that it is still “rated” a 4 star hotel, absolutely horrifies me. I will try break this down. The check-in – When we arrived, the hotel felt almost deserted. Yes, it was Good Friday and a holiday. But it’s a hotel and as such, if they are booking rooms and taking money for the stay over a holiday, they should be prepared to have staff to serve their clientele. After all – that is what they do! After sitting at the reception desk – where there was an empty sherry bottle (which I can only assume was sherry as we weren’t offered any, despite my husband asking for some) and 5 used glasses – for about 10 mins, someone eventually “sort of” checked us in. We were told by this employee (I never got her name) that she was currently on leave that day and just happened to be in the hotel. She was walking around in tracksuit pants, a sweater and a baseball cap. Someone who is dressed like that and on leave should not be dealing with guests, but should rather see where the staff member on duty is. We were asked whether we wanted separate beds? Apparently this had been requested. I didn’t request this. As a married couple of 11 years, we found this to be a very odd question. We were told to wait while the staff “pushed the beds together and put on different sheets”. We waited. There was no offer to help bring in the suitcases in from the car (it was raining at the time so perhaps no one wanted to get wet?), so my husband brought them in. When the apparent receptionist eventually came to sit with us – it felt like she was gracing us with her presence actually - she just sat at the computer, typed whatever she was typing and when I asked for a later check-out (I hadn’t seen the room yet), she simply replied – “I can do 12 and that’s it”. Fine. I thanked her for her help. My husband who was shivering at this point asked whether that was sherry on the table. She simply replied “Yes”. I had to say to her “I believe my husband is asking if he can have some”. Nothing. She didn’t move. She just sat at the computer with a sour look on her face. He went to pour his own “welcome drink” and found only 5 (I think) used glasses. So simply discarded the idea. A pointless exercise. We were then informed that we could go to our room – no offer of any information or where the room was, what time breakfast was. Nothing. When we tried to go into the room, the cleaning lady was still finishing up. What we noticed was her young child eating a sandwich in our room, crumbs on the floor. We also noticed a discarded cold drink bottle and chips on the floor outside our room, close to the ‘exit door”. Now, I don’t begrudge a mother bringing her child to work, especially on a public holiday. I can completely sympathise. I feel sorry for working mothers. But to leave a mess outside a client’s room is just not acceptable. Our room – We stayed in Room 107. The view was of the harbour, which is exactly what we were hoping for. But that’s where the good review stops. Our stay was shocking, shocking, shocking! I don’t need to be in the biggest of rooms. I don’t even need it to be particularly luxurious. But I do expect the room to be clean. To be well-kept. The room was an absolute disgrace. Dirty. Dishevelled. Like someone had thrown a massive party and only did the absolutely necessary to “clean up” so they wouldn’t get into trouble. The white pillow case were discoloured (I’m being nice here as I think they were stained, but I cannot be entirely sure so don’t want to say that), there were pieces of black “fluff’ (I think) on the top of the duvet too. No clue what that was so…. Needless to say my husband and I didn’t even get in to the bed. I didn’t shower – as there was mould all over the bathroom floor, even in the shower. In fact, I never walked barefoot in the bathroom. The shower “faucet” was leaking and seemed to have limescale all over the handle. It was puke worthy. My husband showered as he was frozen to the bone after being drenched by the rain (bringing in our own bags) and told me the water pressure was non-existent. Now, I can live with poor water pressure, but mould and a dirty bathroom?! Definitely not. Needless to say, I washed my face and brushed my teeth and prayed I could get to a clean bathroom as soon as possible. To think of it, I didn’t walk barefoot anywhere in the room and didn’t put on pyjamas, opting to instead sleep in thicker clothes. Just to be safe. There was paint that has been chipped off the walls, a chair that's leatherette is peeling off, a TV that wasn't properly secured on the wall (I’m not sure whether that’s safe), broken window handles, to what we can only presume was a hole in the ceiling which had been covered with a piece of cardboard and duct tape. How is that even acceptable?! The Wifi was completely non-existent and while there was a telephone in the room, it wasn't connected to anything and didn't work. When enquiring about this, we were simply told that they knew about it. That’s it. The extractor in the bathroom remained on, no matter which switched we tried. The curtains were dirty, there was damaged wood – that obviously has expanded over the years being at the coast - present on the doors, on the trims and on the furniture. This should, in the ordinary course be maintained, shouldn’t it? There was some kind of mould on the windows and a discarded cigarette butt on the floor on our patio. My husband and I don’t smoke. In fact – I HATE smoking. A broken standing lamp, that appeared to be on the precipice of falling over. Trims on the floor boards – the silver parts masking the join between the floor and the wall – that are broken and lifting off. I could say more…. But honestly, what’s the point? That alone should be more than enough. To say this was a horrendous experience is putting it mildly. We spent one night in the room and left early the next morning. This was absolutely disgusting! Shocking! This hotel should NEVER be rated 4 stars. 1 star is too generous. As soon as I arrived home, I showered with anti-bacterial spray. I felt absolutely revolting. The only friendly face we encountered was a lady who brought us ice – after my husband had to go ask (no telephone to call and get any). As this was the Easter long weekend, we could not check-in to another hotel that wasn’t a presidential suite (and incurring exorbitant costs). So, we had no choice but to book our flight home on Saturday. Which we did. Was there any good about the hotel? The view is great. As was the lady that got us ice. But that’s it. Bottom line? I would not stay at this hotel if it was offered to me for free. It’s an absolute disgrace. I’m not sure if we were given a poor room because we booked with Bookings.com or whether we asked for an early check-in (early by 30 mins). I don’t know if all the rooms are quite as poor and whether the other staff are also poorly trained, ill-mannered and miserable. So, perhaps this a once-off. this hotel is the place that care, hospitality and simple cleanliness, forgot. This was money down the drain and a long weekend that was completely ruined. One which my husband and I desperately needed. My advice? Find another hotel. Until such time as this one has a complete makeover, revamp or is simply closed down. I have sent this same review to the hotel group. I hope to get a response which takes the seriousness of this review as it should be taken.

We stayed here 3 nights on a birding tour. It was perfectly located for seeing the penguins on Boulder’s Beach and a day trips to The Cape of Good Hope NP. Our beautiful, spotlessly clean room had a fabulous view of the ocean. The breakfasts were scrumptious, and they accommodated my gluten allergy perfectly. We felt warmly welcomed and well cared for. Definitely recommend!

If you want to stay somewhere close to the penguins, as someone else said, it doesn’t get any better than this. And that was what was most important to us. Even if the beaches are closed, you can see the penguins on the walkways that connect them. You are literally staying next to the entrance to Boulders Beach. You can pretty much see penguins at any time of day. If you want a good nights sleep you may want to bring ear plugs. The penguins woke us up at 3:00 am. But we didn’t mind. It was all part of the experience. It is a short walk to Simonstown which we did as well. We spent most of our time enjoying the penguins because that’s what we came for, and it was fabulous.

There is no where else in Simonstown I would want to stay. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with such warm hospitality. Nikita the Manager is wonderful and so kind - she made me feel right at home. The views were breathtaking... waking up and opening your curtains to this view of crystal blue water that went further than the eye could see, it was just magical. The owners have put so much thought and detail into making your stay as comfortable and as memorable as possible. Thank you Nikita and Amanda for such an incredible stay!!! I didnt want to leave! :)

My three night stay was perfect. Amanda and Nicky went out of their way to make sure I felt at home and were prepared to help accommodate an extra bed in the room for my son, as well as cater for a vegan diet. The coffee machine in the room was a plus and the majestic view of false bay is difficult to beat. The guest house is off the main road, which made for a quiet stay. I'll be back the next time I need to stay in Simon's Town.
