Set amongst large, shady trees along the banks of the surging Shire River, Mvuu Camp offers a charming setting for those wishing to explore the country’s premier wildlife haven. Being Malawi’s largest river, the Shire attracts hordes of mammals and birds. Whether you are staying in one of our 12 attractive en-suite units or in the nearby campsite, you will find the atmosphere lively and dynamic. The impressive thatched dining and lounge area offers magnificent vistas over the river, framed by two large baobab trees. For those wishing to cool off in the midday heat there is an inviting pool. The camp is completed by a traditional boma for dining under the stars. Did you know?Since our inception into Liwonde in 1994, large areas of the Park have been rehabilitated; some 500 local people currently benefit financially from our camps. The diverse landscape includes relatively dry mopane woodlands interspersed with candelabra trees, patches of miombo, palm savannah and numerous baobabs on extensive floodplains and dense riverine vegetation.Your activities will include boating, game drives (day and night) and cultural visits to villages.Mvuu means ‘hippo’ in Tonga, referring to the large numbers that occur here. The Park is also home to elephant, rare black rhino, sable, waterbuck, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and, rarely, lion. The prolific bird life seen include African Skimmer, Palmnut Vulture and White-backed Night-Heron.

The camps is situated in the middle of the Liwonde National Park, with rich habitats and animals including Lions, Hippos, Elephants, Buffaloes as well as so many birds species. The MVUU (Hippo) Camp takes care of guests very well, with three meals, tea/coffee, and two tours included in the standard daily rate. A day starts with early morning safari or boat safari coming back for the breakfast, followed by the afternoon boat safari or late-evening/night safari coming back to the camp for the dinner time. Safari tours were really good, with knowledgeable guides and a coffee stop in the middle to stretch out of the car and enjoy beautiful sceneries. We could see lions, elephants, antelopes, waterbucks, etc., as well as so many birds. River cruise was also wonderful to witness hippos as well as families of elephants very close up. Equally memorable highlight was the afternoon and evening safari with sundowner break on the untainted shore of the Shire river. We could observe Hyppos on the ground close up as they are nocturnal and stay in the river during the day. The Sundowner on the Shire river was just breath-taking as we observed surreal and changing colors of Malawi sunset. It takes about 4.5 hours from Lilongwe to the MVUU camp, including the private boat transfer from the jetty to the camp on the other side of the river, but it is definitely worth the visit for this truly unique experience.

We loved almost everything about Mvuu. Our room was spacious, attractive and had a great verandah for watching the wildlife. There was a good variety of activities including game drives with a spotter at night, boat safaris and a walking safari. Game was plentiful and we had some excellent sightings, including porcupine, civet, genet and lion and dozens of hippo.

The staff were all friendly, welcoming and efficient. They couldn’t have done more to sort out problems.

The problems that we had were the discrepancies between the advertised facilities and those actually available. The swimming pool was closed for maintenance, the tree top hide was non-existent and the underground hide was being refurbished. However, the staff went to some trouble to take us to the swimming pool at Mvuu lodge one day and set up a visit to the underground hide on the next day. The food was all good. We were disappointed to find that, as in every place we stayed, having travelled all the way from the UK, we were offered a full English breakfast. However, we did particularly enjoy the excellent bowl of fruit and delicious bread at breakfast.

On our 4x4 campervan trip through Malawi we spent 3 nights/2 days at Mvuu Camp in the Liwonde National Park and enjoyed every minute of our stay starting already with the boat transfer across the Shire River from the car park on one side of the river to the camp on the other. Our chalet was clean and spacious situated directly on the banks of the Shire River with great river views from the veranda. Food was excellent with a wide selection of meals and beverages from breakfast to diner prepared and served by a very good chef and his team.

Widlife was prolific even near to the camp, where a hippo was grazing directly in front of our chalet at dawn and where we came across a group of lions on a nearby floodplain early in the morning on a game drive just 400 metres away from our chalet. The game drives in the morning and in the afternoon/dark were outstanding as well as the boat tours on the Shire River with very knowledgeable guides, that greatly responded to all individual requirements. We saw a huge variety of animals from tiny birds to huge buffaloes and elephants, many different types of antelopes always in great numbers and predators like lions and cheetas.

Should we ever come back into the Liwonde region, we would always choose Mvuu Camp again!

This place is amazing and totally worth it! But the 3 star review is that the food and the check out billing process are just so mediocre and even frustrating. Honestly that wouldn’t be an issue, but when the service, staff, hospitality, safari, accommodation—everything is amazing— then you really notice that the food is not up to par and actually everyone in our group ate lightly and didn’t feel great after. Even the kids didn’t want the chicken fingers. It’s such an easy fix and esp with a chef AND food and bev manager…simple fix to make this place fully perfect! Also at check out they do the bills in this convoluted way that takes and hour and so you leave this heavenly experience feeling annoyed and drained. Never once saw a manager but I can imagine that if someone wanted to make this place perfect, it would be so simple!

Response from Marketing Manager, General Manager at Mvuu Camp

Thank you for your valuable feedback. We appreciate your recognition of our exceptional service, staff, hospitality, safari, and accommodation. We understand your concerns regarding the food quality and the checkout process. Regarding the meals, we're sorry to read of your dissatisfaction for the childrens' meal. We always strive for culinary excellence and will review this aspect closely. Concerning the checkout, we apologize for any inconvenience. Our process is usually efficient, with most guests settling invoices in advance. In your case, the request for separate invoices and the decision to avoid the 4% card fee by paying in cash contributed your delay and for this we are sorry. We assure you that this is not typical and we continuously work to streamline our proceedures. Our management team were in fact present and we understand that you had conversed with the camp manager throughout your short stay. We value your suggestions and are committed to making every aspect of our guests' stay perfect. Your insights are crucial for our improvement, and we hope to welcome you back for an even better experience in the future. Best wishes, The Mvuu Team.

Worth every penny! Fantastic guides (shout out to Julius Machinga) and excellent food. Stay two days minimum, you will kick yourself otherwise. There are two excursions every day, in either a group jeep or a boat. Yes, the funny snoring sounds at night are hippos in the Shire River just a few feet from your door....

My husband and I went to Mvuu at the beginning of November and stayed for four nights. (Wish it could have been more) Each day, our game ranger took us on 2 trips per day for game spotting. Sometimes on a boat and sometimes in a land Rover. On the days we arrived and left he even managed 1. His name was Danger (he was excellent). We saw a lot of game. When we went on the late afternoon one he would stop somewhere safe so we could have a drink, and wait for nightfall. Then, his assistant, Cihweshi, would climb onto the seat at the front of the land rover to game spot. When he saw some he would put the filter on his light so not to disturb them
All the staff at the main camp were lovely as well It was a brilliant holiday.

I couldn't have asked for a more magical stay at Mvuu Camp! I stayed in chalet 10 which was very spacious, clean, beautifully decorated and had an amazing view of the Shire River. I was even fortunate to wake up one morning to a family of ellies (!!) outside my door grazing, what an experience that was...

My guide for the trip was David, and I was blown away by his incredible knowledge and love for the bush. We had spectacular sightings including elephants, lions, a variety of antelope and birds. My favourite trip had to be the boat safari, and urge all those visiting Mvuu to go - especially at sunrise or sundown! We enjoyed popcorn and Malawi G&T's while slowly floating along the river amidst a bright pink sunset, watching all kinds of birds and animals... what a dream!

All the staff went above and beyond to make our stay special. I was particularly pleased about the vegan catering they had to offer, just like my stay at Heughlins Lodge in Lilongwe, nothing was too much to ask for! Thanks again to the Mvuu Camp team, I will be back!

I spent 3.5 days at Mvuu Camp and enjoyed evening boat cruises on the Shire River; game drives with small groups in the Land Rover; and simple, tasty, well prepared food. The safari tents in the camp have the slightly rustic feel that I like while being large, perfectly comfortable and equipped with toilet, showers, bath tub and a large comfortable bed. The game viewing in Liwonde is top notch with prides of lions, abundant elephants and hippos, antelope of all sorts, baboons, monkeys, warthogs, crocs, loads of birds and the occasional rhino sighting. The guide was very knowledgeable, pleasant, competent and accommodating. We only encountered a few other tour vehicles in the bush over 3.5 days. Overall the welcome and support from staff were all one could want. I really enjoyed sitting in the dining area having breakfast or lunch and watching the hippos, baboons and water bucks right there. I highly recommend either the camp or the lodge. Very tranquil setting with a really good vibe.

Quality relaxation, in wonderful rooms on the river bank.
For the family there is a well appointed swimming pool.
Account can be settled with card, but take cash for the game guide tip and staff tips (all settled on check out)

Amazing game views from the river and from vehicles.
We saw a fish eagle catch startle a heard of elly, whi then stampede away.
Hippos yawn endlessly in the water.
Bird life is rich and varied and close enough to capture on film.
We saw a cheetah fresh kill being eaten by 1 month only cubs.

This was our first safari we visited as a family and what an excellent experience it was! The staff all made us feel so welcome and the lodge (7) was beautiful.
the food and drink were excellent and all served by our fantastic and friendly George. The chef Christopher came out at dinner time to check whether we had enjoyed our food which we all agreed was great.
Our guides for the safari Patrick and Fanny were knowledgeable and kept the whole family at ease we saw so many animals the highlights being the lions and elephants we were so lucky we got to see the lions catch and feed on a warthog but they weren't so lucky with a porcupine!
Thank you so much to all the staff for making our experience so satisfying and rewarding we hope to see you all again in the future x
The Gills xx
