Value
The star system that Amercians have become acustomed to, such as 2-3-4 and 5 star hotels would lead you to believe that this gem, a few steps from the water at Punta Sal would be better suited for the college student. You would be misinformed. The 10 room Hostel is more like a quaint inn by the most extraordinary beach on the pacific ocean. If we were to translate the name HUA, which is a name that the proprietor originally created, it would actually mean "DISAPPEAR". The name has a stronger significance than anyone realized, because that is what you are able to do when you stay at HUA. The stresses of your world drift off in the sunset, they melt away in the sea air and are comforted by the delicious mealtime offerings that provide more choices than you have time. The bar offers the famous Peruvian Pisco Sour that emminates tropical fun and you will find yourself cradeled in the kindness of the staff. The accomodations are comfortable and the service is beyond friendly. You might feel that you are visiting your favorite relatives that have a great place by the sea. Any time of the year is beach time at Punta Sal, there is no need to wait until high season as any month provides perfect weather. There is no need to venture past this beautiful jewel, but if you must to gain a change of pace to another close by beach town, you will be happy that you anchored yourself a home base in Northern Peru Puenta Sal at HUA.

We have been taking our dinners regularly in this place during our one-week vacation, sometimes also lunches. The place has nice atmosphere and is located right by the ocean which is great. The food is alright. However, the it is overprized and the portions are extremely small. 8 soles for a tiny weeny pancake without fruits, just with honey or manjar, 35 soles for four small bits of grilled octopus which carried no side (e.g. a salza or a bit of salad) yet was meant to be a main dish, the tiniest pizza I have seen in my life for 25 soles (a diameter of 20 cm). We were always leaving hungry though we spent about 120 soles on three dishes we shared and a drink.

I stayed at this awesome paradise on the beach for 1 week. I highly recommend this place both because the hosts are very nice, the rooms are clean and great, the location is magnificent and the food is very, very delicious. I cannot find anything to complaint about. I really want to come back soon to stay in this paradise on earth. Thanks to José and Marisol for this great stay!!

This little hostel is located in front of the best portion of the beach, no rocks, all sandy, perfect. The food is great (people from other hostels eat here) the owners Pepe & Marisol speak english and are very friendly, the rooms don't have nothing but a bed, private bathroom and a fan. But that is ok because because you need nothing but a hammock, a beer and enjoy the wonderful oceanview.
Price is awesome for what you get.

We have eaten at this restaurant countless times in the past three years. We liked the setting, and the quality of the food.
Unfortunately, the last two times were very disappointing. The price of each dish has gone up. The quality of the food prep is no longer the same. I heard through the grape vine that the chef is new.
That would explain the reason that we no longer enjoy this restaurant which happens to have a great setting. The service was never very good but the food made up for it.
My husband and I are now looking for a new restaurant in the area.
A shame that we will no longer have the Hua as one of our lunch choice!

After two weeks in Lima, Cuzco and Macchu Picchu and all the tourists, it was wonderful to head for the hotel Hua Punta Sal, near Tumbes in Northern Peru. We were there in the quiet season, and there wasn't much to do - perfect! We enjoyed sunset walks on the long beaches, swam in the sea, did yoga exercises on the balcony of our room facing the sea, and enjoyed Marisol and Pepe's friendliness and the excellent food in their beachside restaurant. All of this was a LOT cheaper than places in the heavily touristed areas.
If we wanted a change of pace, we took a bus or taxi on the 15-minute ride south on the Panamerican highway to the jazzy surfing resort to the south. Punta Sal is perfect for a stop on the route south from Ecuador. We will return to see Marisola and Pepe if we go back to Peru.

HUA is such a pleasant place to stay! We loved it! The perfect getaway.
We stayed here for 10 days in the beginning of December, just before high season, with our 3 year old daughter. Location is superb, on the best part of Punta Sal beach. Wide, white sand, clear ocean, trash free, rock pools, perfect for children.
HUA itself is a hostel and restaurant in 1. Our room (nr 6) was spacious, with ocean view, a terrace with hammock and hot water (although trickling) and a fan (no AC) which is cleaned daily. We had all our meals at the restaurant, all 10 days and never got bored with the selection of fresh fish, ceviches, cocktails, salads, pasta's, pizza's etc. You pay about 9 dollar for a main dish, but it's well worth it.
The owners made it even more pleasant. Flaco & Marisol are such sweet people! They are the pioneers of Punta Sal. Flaco is an inspiring guy, ask him about his project :) and Marisol makes it a personal experience. When our daughter turned 3 she got to make her own chocolate birthday cake with the crew, we all sat together to enjoy and they got her a peruvian doll on top of all that. They also took us into Mancora for free and arranged for a boat trip with a local fisherman. They even prepared our catch of the day into a tasty dish.
And yes, they do have 3 dogs, so if you don't like that, you'll have to pass this wonderful place.
If you want a perfect beach getaway, with sun, swim, lovely food, beautiful sunsets in good company for a nice price, just GO!!

Punta Sal where HUA is located is an idyllic, quiet locale unlike Mancora, its sister city nearby where you'll find ATM's, grocery stores and other such services. Punta Sal is small and sweet, and HUA is a standout of a sanctuary in this spot on the northern coast of Peru. Marisol was incredibly helpful and accommodating, emailing us in English and allowing us to arrive well before check-in and hang around the hotel in the morning until our room was ready.

The restaurant served different menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner the kitchen was open even when we were the only guests around. The food is excellent, interesting, and slightly pricey. Most of the restaurants in Punta Sal are catering to tourists and are also a bit pricey, so you may as well eat here and at the Pyramid across the street where you will enjoy the fare!

In sum: beautiful space, well-run and comfortable for Westerners on a fairly secluded quiet beach. My favourite beach by far in Ecuador and Peru, where a very interesting desert-mountainous landscape meets the sea. I could have easily stayed much longer than a few days.

We decided to stay here because of the good reviews. This is a great spot to enjoy the Pacific, sunshine and one of the most amazing sunset ever. The rooms were very comfortable and clean, the restaurant food was excellent , the staff were nice and helpful. The beach is very good and the water warm for swimming if the waves are not too high. We really love our time there ;-)

I did not stay there due to we were a very large group and they did not have accomodations for all of us. I have loved pta sal, since I grew up there. Returning after decades with a large group of friends, we stayed close by and traveled by mototaxi there.
I visited with the owners Flaco & Marisol since we are from the same town and he grew up with my brother. Brought all my friends over for a ceviche de conchas negras, that was spectacular! Their hostal is very well situated in front of the sandy beach, and it is clean and open view to the beach.
The food was fresh and excellent. Recommend it.

This place is fantastic.... great location and views, fantastic and friendly staff always with their owners available for any questions or requests.
The restaurant serves great Peruvian food with local and very fresh products, love the Ceviche mixto and the pizza at night.
The beach is just steps away and for this is the best you can have of the Pacific Ocean in Perú.... the water is not cool, just fresh 🙃

"The best rooms are 12 & 13 (I think) they have oceanview and share the main terrace, at night you can hear the crispy sound of the ocean waves, one room has a queen and the other 2 twin, they cost a little bit more (like $5 extra) but is a "must", Make sure you make a reservation ASAP."
