Please note that i have given this rating not based on staying at their lodge but rather on behaviour on communication. We are staying in utende area for 4 nights and this morning visited chole mjini and came across this tree top lodge and were tempted to visit and see it's beautiful layout and it would might have tempted us to stay here for a night. But we were told that we can't visit just like that without permission so we tried their 3 different mobile numbers n kept on ringing as one number belonged to Mr Jean and other to Ms Anne... at last we went to their public coffee hut n spoke to one of their employee and tried again to call n got connected to Mr Jean. Surprisingly he told us that Anne is busy with the final accounts and one of the guest so therefore can't attend. And without her we can't go in...i understand everyone has their own policy but was quite astonished to note that people in tourism and hotel business are struggling financially under pandemic period and in order to attract more tourists they strategically market their businesses on every platform. When someone says busy that means lack of planning as in today's world even a tycoon will spare time for the customers. Hence after this sad conversation we left chole mjini and headed back to utende to our hotel. First impression always stays with you and hard to overcome it...business does not run by its front cover of the book and i hope the Management changes their attitude and be gentle in terms of time management and communication.

A perfect description of a ‘hidden gem’ in Tanzania! Great experience living on the treehouses, food is good and staff is helpful and friendly too. Very nice and quiet environment, loved the bathroom set up, very unique! For the whale sharks you have to visit during the months from October onwards. Totally recommended :)

Chole Mjini is a treasure on this planet. Mixed with nature and ingeniously operated to cause zero or minimal environmental impact. Plus the kind management by Jean and Anne who integrate pleasure with community development. They work on memorable details like the dinner table is moved around to enjoy different settings and decorations. Great staff, food, views, water activities and the best was to welcome the new year on the sand bank (only in low tide) under a full moon!!! If you are adventurous (or not) this is an experience to have! Thanks to everyone for making it so special for our family.

I knew from the moment I saw the webpage I am going to love this place. But it was even better. I am writing this on my way back home in a depressing and cold Europe and I can only advise anyone: pack your bag and come here, you will not regret that decision. Two weeks without Corona news may be reason alone. But there is this wild garden which just blows you away by its beauty. My son and I had two fabulous treehouses , Moja and Mbili, centered around two of the most beautiful baobabs I have ever seen, and I have seen a few. Lying in the bed with an unobstructed view through baobab and mangrove leaves on Chole Bay, enchanted by birdsong, is reason enough to come. Yes, there are no walls and this is unbelievably great. Weather was just perfect, hot but absolutely no problem as there was always a wonderful breeze. Did not use the fan for 5 days. True, toilets are nothing to write home about, but is this important ? You are living in a majestic baobab tree surrounded by the garden Eden, who cares about toilets ? The food was simply outstanding, every meal was completely innovative and delicious, no repetition at all. No meat, only fish, seafood and vegetables, which is wonderful. Octopus in Tamarind sauce and fish in creamy coconut sauce out of banana leaves were my favourites. Needless to say that staff is super nice and that this place attracts really interesting people. Not to speak of Anne and Jean, the owners, who did such an amazing work here. Than there are the whale sharks, a mindblowing experience. We were three people in the whole bay and had around a dozen sharks to ourselves. The diving with Mafia Island Divers was out of this world and certainly the reefs here are among the best in the world. The snorkeling was excellent as well, with three turtles in 2 tours, and beautiful dhow sailing back home. Such a privilege to be the only guest together with the boatman and a snorkel guide, no pressure, no hectic, just immersion in the cristal clear waters. Activities are very tide dependant so plan your activities well. But than you also have the village to visit, and the fruit bats. Or you try to find the shy mudskippers. The longer you will stay the less you will feel the need to have „activities“. You are there and that is enough. To cut a long story short: I visited many so called ecolodges in Africa, but this one took my heart completely. I can understand if people have problems with going done steep stairs at night for the loo and having no running water in the room and having no Wifi but at one beach bar. If you are one of those people: don‘t come. If the prospect of sleeping in a jungle-like paradise with warm wind blowing through your bed and waking up by birdsong sound great for you: don‘t think twice.

Dear Stefan, Thank you for taking time to write a review. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply but I have been busy, busy, busy. We enjoyed your visit, your cheerful enthusiasm and appreciation of Nature and, of course, your fabulous photographs, especially of the mudskippers. We hope to see you here again before long. Stay well until we do.

My partner and I have just spent 8 nights in this unique and wonderful Treehouse Lodge! We love traveling, always look for something a bit different and Chole Mjini was exactly that! We were looking for somewhere which was as safe as it could be in Covid times, away from the crowds and where there had been no known cases - we decided Chole Island was exactly the place! Treehouses will not be for everyone for sure, but if you like the idea of a true eco environment, money going to the local community, spending nights in the open air (with a very good solid roof over your head!) in what we would definitely describe as barefoot luxury (large double bed, great mosquito net, hot outdoor shower, 3 great meals) this is an experience of a lifetime. The treehouse we stayed in (NNE) was built around a huge baobab and had an amazing “tea house” 2nd floor which would have been nearly 30m (100 feet) off the ground, with 360 degree open views. Many an hour was spent up there relaxing, reading and just watching life go by. The lack of electricity in the treehouse was never an issue with solar lights being provided and WiFi was available at one of the 2 bars if required. With plenty of activities available to fill your time (SUPs, walking, diving, snorkeling, village visits) there was always the option of doing as much or as little as you wanted! Evening meals were a real highlight for us, as the settings were constantly changed (in the ruins and down on the jetty were our favorites) as well as very flexible breakfast times. Anne and Jean were great hosts, always willing to come up with ideas or plans for us if needed, great company at dinner and hearing all of what they have done on the island for the community and for the protection of the flora and fauna was an inspiration. We will return for sure!!
