I came across Gondwana whilst planning a road trip within the Western Cape and decided to take advantage of the special residents' rates and booked 2 nights.
My Kwena hut was very nice although I did not find the strange low sofa very comfortable; 2 comfortable chairs would be an improvement. The fireplace was a plus and I had hoped the fire would be lit whilst I was at dinner but apparently that cannot be done because of the fire risk.
My rate included all meals and 2 game drives a day.
Lunch the first day was bad; after waiting almost an hour, I got a cold, greasy burger with very nice chips! Dinner that night was good but the next night was disappointing. And my first breakfast was good but the second, eggs Benedict, was cold. The platter served with the breakfast both mornings was excellent.
I was very irritated on my first game drive when I was joined by a family with 2 small children. This has never happened on drives on other private reserves where, in my experience, families with young children had to book private vehicles. I was not asked prior to the drive what my game viewing experience was and it turned out it was the childrens' first game drive. I had done many. I had no chance to complain to reception until after the drive the next morning. My complaint was not well received although I was offered a place on another vehicle. However, because the guides seemed to have fairly specific itineraries, I did not change. Hennie was an excellent, knowledgeable guide although did tend to talk a bit much!! He made every attempt to show us all the animals and was successful (leopards excepted of course!). We had great sightings of the male lion.
The elephants also made an appearance in the "camp" visiting the patios of some huts and drinking from the pool.
I enjoyed my stay and the residents' special was good value but normal rates would be way beyond my reach.
I put my reservations about the food and games drives in my review requested by Gondwana and received a response from the General Manager.

We had a fantastic time during our walking safari. For us, being in our fifties and having an average european fitness, this walking safari was not strenuous at all. We had the luxury of moderate temperatures and enjoyed very engaging encounters with our guides. Coming back to the camp was like getting a special treat - the beautifully designed tents and bathroom facilities were very relaxing and comfortable.

We chose to do a safari for part of our honeymoon, and our travel agent booked Gondwana for us. We had one of the best holiday / hotel experiences we have ever had!

Hotel

The game reserve is about a 4 hour drive from Cape Town and as such feels very peaceful. The reserve / hotel is probably the most relaxing place we have ever been and the staff are fantastic. The Kwena Lodge has a number of individual luxury huts with double rooms, with rainfall showers and baths with a view over the reserve. The staff were incredibly hospitable, and we especially appreciated help from Rochney in the restaurant and Yzanni on the front desk. The restaurant served a number of menus on rotation and the food was fantastic. There were a number of local wines available too for a very reasonable price.

Game drives

We went out twice a day with our driver, Hennie, who was excellent and who we wanted to give a special mention to. The fact one has the same driver each day was also useful as he was aware of where we had been /what we have seen each day. His knowledge of the reserve and all the flora and forna was exceptional and with Hennie we saw elephants, giraffes, lions (including two cubs!), rhinos (and babies), cheetahs and hippos.

The schedule for the drives are really well thought through, leaving lots of time to see animals and lots of time for relaxing in the middle part of the day. The day started at 6.15 where we would meet in the bar for a tea and muffin before heading out for 2-3 hours. Once the drive had finished we would go back and have a delicious breakfast and relax until going on the second drive around 4pm. Afternoon tea was served before hand and we got back between 7-8 each evening for dinner.

1. I would like more explicit instructions upon arrival and during the stay as far as the daily schedule.
2. We often did not receive water or napkins until the middle or end of our meals.
3. To be honest, I felt like a predator hunting prey when in the dining room when I was trying to get things from the staff. The service was very slow. This is hard for families with small children. May I suggest that they have the carafes of water waiting on the table when you arrive? And napkins at each place? One night it took 1 hour for my dinner to arrive. For all of these items, I had to search for someone to help me and they sometimes looked confused or a little annoyed when I requested them.
4. Please install USB ports next to beds or have adapters for US plugs. We were unable to plug anything in and had to take turns charging our devices in the 1 USB port in the kitchen.
5. The ponchos were excellent to keep us warm and dry on the drives.
6. Our kids loved the Jr. Ranger booklet and had fun filling it out.
7. Lodge #9 was beautiful but I wish we had booked the rooms near the restaurant to avoid having to be chauffeured to meals and back
8. Drivers were very friendly.

Vehicles filled to capacity during a pandemic.. it may be legal but it shows an immense lack of consideration of the welfare of the guests. The staff were delightful but understandably stressed because of the hospitality industry taking strain due to covid. They were short staffed and tried their utmost to accommodate our needs. The food was under par and the service was bad. Lunch time meal was particularly bad and the poor staff took the brunt of it. Dinner was definitely under par and we joked that the main chef had resigned and his poor sous chef was desperately trying to cook! But the room was spectacular and the sightings of a rare animal was a great treat. The cycling around a restricted reserve was also very enjoyable and well sign posted. So not all bad but would definitely say it was not good value for money. The shower in our room flooded the bathroom but in all honestly it was sorted out quickly. Also kids screaming and making a racket around the pool area that we decided to go back to our room. I felt they could have intervened because all the adults left the vicinity of the pool.

I was lucky enough to stay here with my family for 3 nights , we stayed in one of the 4 bedroom villas which are about a 15 minute drive from reception so you do need a car. We did 4 game drives and saw everything , lions giraffes hippos elephants buffalo rhinos , it's incredible , we had a fantastic guide Megan who was so knowledgeable and passionate about the animals. You are out on the game drives for up to 3 hours and it does get cold so take lots of layers the trucks are open top so it's very windy! Just a tip , the small shop doesn't sell any food so if you like snacking or have kids take your own snacks. We had an amazing time!

Once in a lifetime experience! Wonderful food and service. However expected a bit more for the price one pays. Would recommend more lean back chairs at swimming pool on a hot summers day for all the guests to relax at the swimming pool. The spa was not so pleasant due to the staff members not being friendly at all! Maybe to put in a bit more of effort in the finer detail of things to justify the high prices one pays and to make guests feel slightly more special. Otherwise very beautiful accommodation and was wonderful to see the Kalahari lions!

If you are looking for an unforgettable family experience in the wild, without social media and far from the maddening crowd, then this is the place for you. We spent 3 nights at this camp, accompanied by 3 attentive, friendly and super efficient staff to cater for game drives, cooking and housekeeping for us 7 adults, including an 87yr old plus 4year old & 7mth month old baby. This solar powered camp had 4 en suite bedroomed tents, a dining tent, socializing tent and their cooking tent. All elegantly but cleverly furnished and kept spotless. The fire pit in the boma was the gathering spot each evening, chatting and just enjoying the carefree, magical moments under the glittering stars. The sightings were amazing thanks to the effortless and exceptional skills of our ranger, Tuan who made sure we got our magnificent moments with the most handsome lion we had ever seen. He made this trip so special for us all, including my granddaughter who was treated to a Junior Ranger pack in arrival and taken in an outing to learn about tracks. Anyone who has any thoughts of taking a trip, look no further than the gorgeous Gondwana and all her beauty. This
place is very special and I could not have wished for a better way or a better place to celebrate my 60th with my beloved family. Do not wait ... time moves swiftly..make the magic happen.

We had a wonderful 2 night break in Fynbos Villa Number 9. The rooms were comfortable and the villa was well appointed with all the necessary equipment and facilities (fire wood, Blitz etc etc.). We especially loved the Rooibos soaps! The added touches of milk and fresh water in the fridge and the array of coffees and teas were appreciated.

Our game ranger, Austin, was just delightful. We thoroughly enjoyed our two game drives with him. He was professional, friendly, interesting and accommodating and we wish we could have had a few more drives in your beautiful reserve. He is an asset to your organisation.

Our welcome and check-in by Vital was excellent. He went out of his way to try to find a Gondwana puffer jacket for my husband (he loved the dark green quilted jacket!). Sadly there wasn't an XL in stock, but Vital did his best to try to find one.
All in all, we had a truly wonderful stay. It was such a delight to be out and about in our own province. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Gondwana as a destination to our friends.

My guide Khulumani (Coolman) was superb- he made the stay! His patience, knowledge, and ability to read his guests well makes him a real gem.

A few other things wrt the lodge and service could be better for a 5* establishment. My welcome when I arrived wasn’t great, housekeeping sometimes took a while (and when you’ve been out for a game drive and breakfast for 4 hours, waiting to get to your room isn’t the best). Sometimes service was a bit slow and it did feel like the staff sometimes only checked on certain groups of people, but given covid and a thinner staff complement it was totally understandable. I also had a a little bit of an exciting moment when one day it rained really hard, and it was drizzling through my thatch roof- it was short lived and made for a touch of adventure!

Overall my stay was wonderful! The rooms are delightful, and the bath to die for. And although it was a little bothersome that I had to keep ringing to ask for more firewood, the fireplace in my room was magic! The food is also wonderful- incredibly tasty, and a really wide variety. The ease to get lunch or dinner delivered to my room was also great!

One last piece of advice. When booking ask not to get Kwena Hut 7. There is a huge bush obstructing the view in front of the hut, which is not the case for other huts. And the noise from the restaurant extractor fan can be REALLY loud, as this is the hut closest to the restaurant.

Hi there, for the Fynbos villas you can have the staff at the main reception drive you from and back to the villa each day eg for breakfast Indeed you are not allowed to walk it due to the land between the villas and the main reception being a "live" area ie with the animals roaming freely
