Groenvlei Farm Guest house is situated an a working farm approximately an hour's drive from Graaff Rienet. There is quite a stretch of dirt roads en route to the establishment but they are in good condition.
When we arrived, we were first warmly welcomed by a very friendly great dane followed by the very gracious farm owner who greeted us as if we were old friends coming for a return visit. We were then shown to our unit, which is quaint and has modest homely furnishings. There were also vases of fresh roses on the kitchen table in the unit, from the ample rose bushes in the gardens. The unit was just what we needed, there was a separate bedroom for the children and the bathroom had both shower and bath facilities, all impeccably clean. Although we had opted for self catering, the farm owner offered to prepare a meal as we had arrived a little later than anticipated. What is more, she has also seen to it that there was delicious home baked bread, and even a milk tart for us in the unit, not to mention the home made rusks with the hospitality tray. We welcomed the fact that the unit had no television set, we so enjoyed the peace and quiet of the farm. The following morning, we were welcomed to partake in the farm activities. Our 5 year old son was able to feed some very eager and thirsty calves who were so keen to drink their milk from the bottles. We then explored the rest of the farm which has horses, pigs and sheep too. We were very sad to leave as we had used the farm as a stop over on our journey. The farm owner was so thoughtful, she picked one of the beautiful roses and placed it in our vehicle as we were about to leave. We will most definitely consider a return visit in the near future as we had a super time there and commend the very hospitable farm owner for being so thoughtful and gracious.

Dazzling Blue Skies and a Million Stars
Groenvlei Guest Farm is 40 scenic minutes outside of the wonderful historic town of Graaff Reinet. It is a working Merino and cattle farm, but you are able to walk and cycle pretty much at will around its 10000 ha. The days were beautiful, with the brilliant blue skies of the Karoo, the sunlight glinting on the many koppies that surround the farm, and the warm smells of veldt and Karoo plants.
There is much to do and see in the surrounding areas: Nieu Bethesda, Graaff Reniet with its 220 national historical monuments, as well as many delightful eateries, Camdeboo National Park, the Valley of Desolation, and even Mountain Zebra is not too far away.
We found that days on the farm were so peaceful and restoring, we did not really want to spend a lot of time touring. We read, walked, ate, and just sat in comfort watching the hills.
Accommodation is very warm and inviting. There are a number of self catering units, as well as a camping facility with excellent ablution blocks. There is a wonderful historic old pub / gathering. Venue.
The young hosts, Sula and Johnny, are very welcoming and kind, and very knowledgeable about the area.

Stayed only one night on the way home from a family Christmas and although it is quite a way from the main road along some interesting gravel roads, it really was worth the time it took to get there. The cottages and rooms are just far enough away from the main house to maintain a sense of privacy without feeling isolated. The farm dam was a lovely spot to relax after the hot day and the venue where the history of the farm is displayed is really interesting - old photographs, old rifles, all sorts of stuff. We arranged for dinner and what a treat! Two kinds of meat, three kinds of veggies, rice AND pudding! and such a lot we could not finish it, so we took the leftovers for padkos! The rooms are older but very cofmfortable and there are lots to read. The kitchenette has everything, so you could easily do your own braai or whatever. The hostess was very friendly and had everything ready for us - comms beforehand was very effective. Highly recommended for those who like to go off the beaten track.

We are an extended family of 7 people and we decided to do a road trip down to Cape Town as we were invited to a wedding. Our first stop from Johannesburg was Groenvlei Farm Guest House. From the moment we stepped out of the car we fell in love with the everything we could see. We were greeted by Lexi, the beautiful Great Dane which the children still refer to. On Lexi's heels, was Lynne Minnaar. We were welcomed warmly and shown to our unit. All the info was given to us and soon our braai and the inside fireplace were filled with licking flames as we enjoyed a glass of red wine, enjoying our surroundings. All the beds were fitted with electric blankets and it was heavenly to get into bed that evening. We slept well and reluctantly left the next morning to our next destination. It so happened that we needed a place to stay over again on our way back to Johannesburg. We all agreed that Groenvlei would be our first choice and were fortunate enough to make a booking again. This time we were spoiled rotten by being set up in 2 adjoining units. There were beds for each and every person of our huge family and we stayed up late playing table tennis, scrabble and reading until the last wood was put in the fire place. We left late the next morning, none of us really wanted to leave Groenvlei. Besides the beauty surrounding us, the atmosphere kept us there. Peaceful, tranquil, calming. What a blessing to have been able to experience Groenvlei. I would highly recommend Groenvlei either as a place to stay over, or just to relax for a couple of days for a peaceful get away. Thank you Lynne, for sharing your haven with us. It was unforgettable! We will most certainly be back! Louis, Bernadette and children

We stayed over for two nights and used Groenvlei as a base to explore Graaff-Reinet.

All the comments in the other reviews are accurate. The farm is beautiful, Lynne is an excellent host and cook and the atmosphere very friendly and relaxed.

Although the accommodation is spotless and does not lack anything, the interior is a bit dated and the bathroom in our unit was a bit cramped. This being the only reason I did not give an excellent rating.

The farm is situated on a dirt road approximately 55km and 65km from Richmond and Graaff-Reinet respectively. The road is well maintained and a stay over well worth the drive.

Will visit again.

One of the best establishments I have ever stayed over on my way down to Plett. It is far away from the hustle and bustle of city life and the perfect place to stop over and have a rest. Lynne makes you feel at home straight away. The meals offered was exceptional and very good value for money. A lovely home cooked meal with all you can ask for. I will definitely make use of this establishment again. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful overnight stay at Groenvlei. What a beautiful location in an exceptionally exquisite part of South Africa. The furnishings are a bit dated and basic but spotless and perfectly adequate..especially at the extremely reasonable rate. Lynne is delightful host and a superb cook. I highly recommend the dinner. Groenvlei is definitely with the detour and visit.

We stopped at Groenvlei for one night and it was far to short! It is the most beautiful farm with the most wonderful and welcoming hosts. Tannie Lyn provided with incredible lamb to braai in their 1700 restored cottage, and made us the most delicious breakfast the next morning. The farm has a fascinating history and Tannie Lyn has done her utmost to showcase it which is so much fun to look at and read about.

I would have loved to have done some walking and mountain biking on the farm, but a sundowner on the koppie behind the farm was a good second best. The accommodation is comfortable and homely (some may say dated) but it was perfect for our needs. It is evident a lot of love and hard work has gone into the farm and I feel lucky to be the recipients of such love.

Great place to get away from the buzz in Johannesburg with family or group of friends. The house had everything you needed and the staff was very friendly! The farm is beautiful with some great hiking trails. Don't forget, before you leave, ask the owner if you can buy some Karoo Lamb to take home. It is the best!
