In the heart of a town with a rich history and immense character, Drostdy Hotel, the finest Karoo gem, is found. This town, Graaff-Reinet, was established in 1786 and has matured into a charming destination that is well-known for its blend of Cape Dutch, Victorian and Karoo architecture. Uniquely, the town is surrounded, almost entirely, by the Camdeboo National Park which boasts spectacular wildlife and natural scenery. Just as pleasing to the eye, Drostdy Hotel was initially built in the early 1800s and has its own fascinating story, having been refined over the years into one of South Africa’s top 10 hotels. Although it bears modern touches and a contemporary atmosphere, it remains true to its roots with furnishings and antiques that point to the past. Guests will find this understated Grande dame a comfortable retreat in the expansive Great Karoo.

Just spent two days in Room 802, spacious and comfortable with a large bathroom with tub and walk in shower.
Staff friendly and helpful with very efficient laundry service.
Plenty of secure parking.
The grounds are lovely and the main swimming pool area very nice, clean and tidy with comfortable recliners and plenty of shade from umbrellas.
Breakfast is a nice buffet with hot options and we had dinner one night in Camdeboo which was nice(separate review).
We certainly recommend the Drostdy Hotel and would stay again.

What a charming stay in an hotel with a difference. Not the traditional hotel layout - these rooms are spread out over the property in central Graaff Reinet capturing the days of old.

Reception was extremely professional and explained all the COVID procedures in detail during the registration process. The grounds and well maintained and staff very pleasant. The room is well fitted out with a large shower room as well as French doors to a private patio and into the garden. A swimming pool is centrally located. The bed was comfortable and relaxing.

The restaurant is very central in the hotel and well fitted for COVID. Tables were spaced apart and staff following all regulations and taking necessary precautions of cleaning continuously we were there. Breakfast was wonderful, hearty and well presented and the menu should meet all requirements.

We shall definitely return to this oasis in Graaff Reinet.

This hotel is gorgeous! The interior decoration is done with taste and the exterior suits the town very well - old world class!
We loved that it didn’t feel like a hotel, but rather individual appartements.
The hotel is well priced.
Only two areas of improvement- the bathroom and some places in the room were dusty and dirty and the wifi is not reliable.
But Overall- a wonderful experience!

We really looked forward to spending 2 nights in Graaff Reinet at this iconic hotel. We had friends that treat it as their second home, so it was a must visit. What a treat witnessing the love and care that has gone into this town to keep it a sparkling gem in the Karoo.

Drostdy Hotel

Pros - History, class, lovely original restoration

Cons - Up and down service, reception and communication in need of “ headmaster” ( MD) oversight. Hotel looking a bit tired around the edges, with maintenance and care not doing it justice.

Food
Original Email requests 10 days ahead of stay ,via Cape Town reservations Centre for vegan meals availability. They did not know there are daily vegan options offered and reception had no note on the system that we had requested for vegan meals.

Room ( Suite)
Damp in walls in suite room -Reception merely looked at me when I reported this, with not one of the 2 ladies reacted or offered to find a solution. Maintenance was sent after I contacted the hotel manager, but honestly sending someone to patch a wall or two inside the room when we are staying there is not professional or sensible. Maintenance also admitted that damp in the walls of the rooms was a general problem.( MD?)
We on day 2 told them we would not unpack to move to another room, even though it was not offered when first reported on check in day.

Rooms cleaning and maintenance need proper oversight. Room phone pre programmed keys did not work, so each time I needed to walk to reception or restaurant to communicate. Reporting it resulted in 2 ladies arriving, calling reception via dialing reception numbers, and looking at me as if I wasted their time. I humbly pointed out that I did not know the numbers of each place, and would use the preprogrammed key. Oh, ok now the penny dropped 😂

Look, we enjoyed our stay even though my wife was on medication and suffered from acute back spasms. As such, I didn’t feel the need inconvenience her further or to belabor the points and suggestions for improvement I had provided verbally to various supervisors, so turned down an invitation to meet the Hotel manager.
I hope they take my suggestions on board for others benefit.

We don’t blame the wonderful staff in general, as restaurant staff and other staff encountered ( besides reception) tried really hard, and were super friendly. You cannot blame them if their training is not all encompassing.

Conclusion: Staff training needs greater attention and in my humble opinion, the “headmaster” (MD) is the one I would criticize for that.

Dear Edmund Thank you for your review. We pride ourselves on our service offering to our guests and welcome feedback, as it gives us the opportunity to constantly improve our service offering and grow our young graduates. The Drostdy Hotel is an owned subsidiary of SA College for Tourism which annually trains young individuals from disadvantaged communities in hospitality services. After completion of the course, in order to gain experience, young graduates are placed in various hospitality establishments across the country, this includes the Drostdy Hotel for the past 6 years. While we endeavor to provide the best service by supporting young trainees and ensuring guests’ and trainee interactions are monitored by senior personnel, unfortunately from time to time this does not happen because the supervisor is busy with another guest or request. We appreciate your constructive feedback – and apologize for any inconvenience experienced. We note your comments about the damp walls and maintenance, we would like to assure you that regular scheduled maintenance does take place, the building is a historic building with all the challenges historic buildings from the 1800’s face in preserving the original structure. Once again, thank you for supporting the Drostdy Hotel and our social responsibility projects. We sincerely hope you will visit us again and look forward to a renewed beginning. Kind regards Janus

Staying at the Drostdy Hotel in Graaff-Reinet was the highlight of our trip to the Eastern Cape. Excellent service, comfortable rooms and five star food. The furniture and artworks are outstanding. There is absolutely nothing that could possibly be criticised about this place. It is great that Historical Homes of South Africa took care of the hotel and many other buildings of interest in Graaff-Reinet.

We have stayed at this hotel at least 7 times over the past few years and have told our friends and family to really make an effort to stay over here. What a disappointment our last stay has been. The executive room we had is in need of maintenance, the shower head is so blocked with calcification that the water sprays in all directions except down! Switching on the bedside lamp caused it to totally fall apart as the shade had not been assemble properly. To top this, they couldn't get the breakfast order right and didn't look to pleased when we sent it back. Why do we have to ask for milk after the coffee and tea is served. Furthermore we had to ask for toast and then we get told they do not have brown bread--this is not what one expects from a star rated establishment. These are but a few problems we encountered, and it appears there was no manager on site checking on the quests, as previously we were asked numerous times if we are satisfied with the service. Why is the quality of service going down hill?

We stayed at the lovely Drostdy Hotel on a 2 night special. We had a very comfortable room, spacious, excellent bed, smart TV, good coffee in the room etc. The Valentine night dinner special was excellent and our waiter Bongani was tops. The bar service was friendly and efficient. On the second day the hotel made up a generous breakfast pack for us which was great and much appreciated.
Breakfast on the first morning was a bit subdued and a little disappointing - we were not advised that one of the menu items was not available until we ordered it and we were never offered another cup of coffee. Staff could have been friendlier, could have offered orange juice but unfortunately they stood mostly observing us. The Spa treatment was excellent and the Spa staff very professional and friendly. Our suggestions for improvements: greater management visibility, more training/monitoring of serving staff, plan for Spa demand during special offers - we repeatedly tried to contact the spa over 2 days to add a treatment but could not reach anyone. On checking in, Reception offered to contact someone regarding a walking tour which we never had any feedback on, there were a few maintenance issues in our room. Overall we loved Graaff Reinet and the Drostdy and hope that you will iron out the few issues. We would love to come back.

My parents and I stayed over at the Drostdy on a roadtrip from Knysna to Hartbeespoort.
It is a veritable oasis in the dry hot Karoo where we were able to rest and recover before continuing with our journey. Our suites were spacious and comfortable with all the amenities we could have wished for and the pool on our doorstep was a blessing in the 35 degree heat.
I also submersed myself in the indulgent Africology Spa where Tamara renewed my body and spirit.
My dad said the rack of Karoo lamb he had for dinner was the best meal he’d had all holiday and the eggs Benedict I had for breakfast was spot on!
Despite the restrictions and limitations placed on the staff due to the Covid 19 pandemic, all the necessary protocols were implemented and carried out as unobtrusively as possible.
All in all a wonderful experience and I look forward to returning.

Really. I booked in advance for a lunch at restaurant. What a disappointment. They could only offer us pizza, bugers, salad x 2 and beef curry for a Sunday lunch. Needless to say..... we had a beautiful La Motte 2020 wine and left. What a lovely meal at pioneers restaurant.Really. You can’t hide behind covid anymore I travelled all the way from Limpopo for a disappointing Sunday lunch at Drostdy Hotel.

I had great expectations of the hotel as it was recommended by friends although their stays were years ago.
I had to complete 3 forms on arrival; 2 for Covid and 1 to accept the hotel terms.
My room was in Strech's Court. It wasn't big but was clean and the bed comfortable. The armchair in the room was not comfortable being very low. There are very limited DSTV channels and the wifi was good.
The pool was green and not at all inviting.
I looked at the restaurant menu as I had intended to have dinner at the hotel but found the choice limited and the prices very high. The lamb chops were R100 more than I paid in another restaurant the night before where the food was very good. So I ate dinner elsewhere. Breakfast was ok but not special.
It would be better if the pathway to the car park was not gravel as one cannot wheel a suitcase.
Overall I was very disappointed.
