Lovely guesthouse! The host, Hester, greeted us with a warm heart. She is clearly passionate about her work. The rooms has air conditioning and electric blankets for cold nights. Breakfast was a treat! Delicious food and coffe. Hester served us wearing a white glove. Beautifully maintained garden and Victorian house!

Our journey started from Johannesburg on route to Mossel Bay for Buffalo Motorcycle Rally and we decided to try a different route via Colesberg on N9 through Graaf Reinet. The travel distance is 1200km in total. 800km to Graaf Reinet by car and trailer and 400km by car or motorcycle to Mossel Bay. Beautiful quant town with so much history...

We were upgraded to a small cottage in the beautiful gardens which was really quite perfect. The owner whose name has slipped my aged memory was a lovely lady who couldn't have been more helpful. Restaurants are a short walk away and also very good.

Avondrust is truly a lovely place to stay. When we arrived (unfortunately later than anticipated) Hester greeted us so warmly and she had also booked a restaurant for us. Our room was lovely and the gardens are absolutely fantastic. The breakfasts are very good. The staff are so warm and hospitable and go out of their way to ensure you...

We stayed at Avondrust with family for a night on 1st January. As there were no other restaurants open that night than the Spur, Daniel kindly offered to have us 'picnic' at pool area with our eats and the use of their cutlery & crockery. We stayed in the main house and the garden rooms. All tastefully decorated and fitting...

I found the property calm, quiet and the service unobtrusive yet welcoming. The room was very bespoke, it had a character all of it's own - which is great when staying in such an interesting town. I didn't really make use of the breakfasts, but there was a good selection of continental and hot options. Only issues were that I...

The B&B is set in a beautiful garden close to a number of restaurants. Service was excellent - on our way there we received a call to confirm the time of our arrival and query whether we would like them to make a dinner reservation at one of the local restaurants. A reservation was made for us at Coldstream -...

When querying a cancellation charge, I was shouted at by the owner to read my terms and conditions across the so-called quiet gardens. Jacqui You wanted to cancel a booking for the following day with refund. It just doesn't work that way at any establishment, especially over peak season. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
In the heart of Graaff-Reinet lies Avondrust, an imposing Guest House and B&B. Built in 1911 it offers you 4000m2 of gracious living as its philosophy. History Of Avondrust Guest House Avondrust - A Home from Home in the Karoo Cradled in a loop of the Sundays River, the Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet is home to some 200 national monuments. Around every corner a piece of history is revealed to the visitor. And it is here, in the centre of town, that Merino sheep farmer and breeder, Jan Stephanus Minnaar, built his dream house during 1911. Avondrust ("evening rest") was to be his retirement home. He lived here with his wife, Maria Magdalena Smuts, "Ouma Smuts". After he passed away, his daughter, Cora Luckhoff inherited Avondrust. Cora did not want to live in the house and sold it to her brother, Eduard Smuts (Eddie) Minnaar. After his and his wife's death, Cyril Minnaar bought Avondrust from the estate. His grandfather was Jan Minnaar's brother. Graaff-Reinet Accommodation Two Luxury Suites in the Manor House, one with its own private lounge and veranda, the second is upstairs with its own balcony and Bay window overlooking the front garden and water fountain. A romantic Honeymoon Suite with a king size four poster bed and slipper bath. Five Deluxe Rooms, of which one is a lofted room in the Manor House with its own balcony that has a treetop view of the garden. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with private entrances leading out into the tranquil garden behind the impressive Edwardian Mansion. All rooms boast space, privacy and comfort plus the use of a large pool overlooking the mountains. Wake up to a full country breakfast, served with a crackling fire on the side to warm up your cold winter mornings. Avondrust is within walking distance from all shops, museums and restaurants. Accommodation is offered on a bed and breakfast basis. During the 1990's, the Van Hoffen Family converted the house into a guesthouse. It is still a home away from home for guests today with Nico Hattingh and Tess Erlank as the current owners. ... more   less
