We were impressed by the safety and protocols in place at this property. Upon arrival you have your temperature taken by a touches system, you are then directed a set of sinks to wash your hands. Your luggage is also sprayed before being taken to your room. Front desk staff is wearing masks and they are behind plexiglas glass so everyone is securely checked in.

We found the staff to be most helpful - printing of required PCR tests, a slightly later check out time, assistance with luggage, etc.

Our room was a nice size with a balcony that we enjoyed that overlooked the pool. The furnishings were in good shape and the room was clean. Bathroom was good.

Our meals at the hotel were all very good. Breakfast buffet was enormous with so many choices. Food and beverage staff was all very efficient and professional.

The pool was lovely - with a small children's pool as well. We didn't really use the beach as our time was limited but it looked nice as well.

Would recommend as a very nice spot for relaxing and enjoying the surrounding area.

On arrival we were told to wash our hands before going in, as Africans we thought it was cool😊But what surprised us,is when some visitors “whites” weren’t told to wash their hands. So when we got in our appetite just “died”😁instead of eating we decided to order something light, the African tea we ordered was👎🏻 It’s probably the worst african tea I have had in Rwanda compared to other places I have been. The swimming pool area is on point, beach is 👍The building is beautiful, washrooms are clean☺️.

Dear Memy Sincerely thank you for having been our guest. Thank you too for passing your feedback through this review. We are glad that you loved the location and facilities of our hotel. Saddened that your arrival experience fell short of your expectations. All our guest, for their own healthy precaution, are encouraged to wash their hands due to the Ebola cases in the nearby DRC unless the guest were initially in the hotel and assumption is they did wash their hands the first time they walked in. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this might have caused you. Regards Duncan

Unfortunately today's arrival at the Lake Kivu Serena was not a huge success

1. Our booking had been mislaid and so a fresh booking had to be made
2. We asked for some fresh milk to be brought to our room for our tea and powdered milk was brought.
3. Despite following instruction for internet access, it did not work. It was not until we contactd reception that they told us that internet access was via a voucher - they could have communicated this in advance
4. Having successfully accessed the internet we now find it cuts out intermittently.

These things did not create a good initial impression. Since then we have found the staff to be pleasant , the ambience delightful and the stay very relaxing. Our enduring impression is very good .

The Lake Kivu Serena in Gisenyi has a very rustic and colonial appeal. One of the things that really caught my eye was how they were able to merge modernity without having to sacrifice the bucolic and laid back appeal that it has. The staff were wonderful and made you feel very welcome. They also made sure you were well attended to and knew where all the amenities were. They even printed out my PCT test for me.

The room I got was very comfortable and I had a balcony with the lake view. The breakfast buffet was typical Serena - with a lot of amazing choices. Dinner at the Kyoga restaurant was likewise excellent with healthy options for all types of palates.

The internet connectivity was strong with good bandwidth so you can go ahead with an online meeting uninterrupted. For those who want something quaint and quiet, this is one place you can go to.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Lake Kivu Serena, during our trip to Rwanda. We both celebrated our 60th birthday there (same day) and I just want to thank the staff for making this such a wonderful stay.

The location is fabulous. Close to the border of DRC (and the busy border post is a short walk away) the hotel is situated on the glorious Lake Kivu, with a fine pool but, even better, its own private sandy beach, with fine swimming in the lake. The rooms are comfortable, well equipped, and the food is excellent but most of all, the staff are remarkably friendly. In particular, we want to thank Mustafa Arafat, the Sales & Reservation Manager, who helped to make our birthday celebrations so memorable, with his kind, generous and thoughtful plan. He is a tribute to the Serena chain and they are lucky to have him!

This oasis of calm, well appointed luxury is brought to life by a staff team who go our of their way to help and assist. We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay at Lake Kivu Serena and very much look forward to visiting again, on our next trip to Rwanda. Many thanks!

I don't think there's another view (of the lake) like it in Rwanda. Quite different from the hilly rooftops of Kigali. Very calming effect and serene environment; the hotel has really taken care of the gardens and overall premises. Food is very good, with a wide selection for breakfast. Only downside is the rooms are not as spacious or cosy (bed was not comfortable though they even went through the trouble of changing the -initial-faulty mattress) as the Marriott in Kigali. However, the balcony in the room and un-obscured views of the lake and sunsets is definitely worth any discomforts in the room itself.

We’ve spend 3 days at Serena while the city was in lockdown.
Everybody at Serena wants to give you a good time.
The food is great (the chef is there everyday to make suee) and the guys at the pool and in the restaurant are more then friendly!

A special attention to Leon. He helped us with the broken window of our car (there was a mechanic within 30 minutes) and made sure that we had our permit to drive to Volcanos. A top guy!

Only the beds are a little bit dated and due for replacement.

The property is an oasis of beauty in the middle of a village. The large property has lots of native trees and birds, and the pool and fitness centre are a boon with the heat and all the good food.

The hotel overlooks a “swimmable” lake (although there is too much plastic and garbage floating around to want to venture in).

The staff are very friendly and accommodating. When we arrived, we wanted to ensure we had a quiet room, and I guess knowing they were hosting 2 private functions that night, they upgraded us to a luxurious 2-room suite with private (large!) balcony. Unfortunately we could still hear the booming music from the functions until 10pm, followed by more distant but still booming music probably coming from the local village.

The buffet breakfast was wonderful, and the a la carte menu has lots of good options, although service was a little slow.

Lovely first-class hotel.

Dear Guest, Thank you for the feedback in regard to your experience while in Lake Kivu as contained in this review. We are definitely disappointed that your stay was punctuated with some inconveniences which rightly caused you lots of dissatisfaction. Whereas we hardly had some control on the noise levels caused by a privately organized music concert nearby, we sincerely apologize for the bad customer service and especially the slow service. We thank you so much for having been our guest and taking time to share your feedback. Kind regards

The location is lovely with a number of restaurants around the corner. We travelled with little kids so we couldn’t do much walking. We however saw the restaurants when we were leaving. I can’t remember their names but we saw more than 4 of them by the lake. When you return to the Main Street before the hotel, first exit at the roundabout should lead you there.

The prior answer from yesterday is exactly what I would say. Lake Kivu Serena Hotel is a long distance from the gorilla trek. We did it but we already had our landrover and our driver/guide who was with us on the whole 2 week trip.
