It is always surprising how quickly things become rural even when leaving the bigger South African cities like Cape Town. I was excited to be heading North from the Mother City, on the N7 towards the West Coast and Cederberg Mountains. Only two or so hours from the airport, following the simple directions “turn right at Piekenierskloofpass”, an old world awaits.

On the 1795 Modderfontein farm, The Old Village at Citrusdal offers a collection of beautifully preserved self catering cottages. With whitewashed stone walls, the deep windows enhance the clear, crisp light of the Cederberg open skies. The decor shows off the original wood features by being simple and calm, making effective use of subtle country classics like matching florals and stripes. Touches like green painted window shutters complete the nostalgic effect.

Of course I chose to stay in The Smithy, the oldest house in the valley. The softness of the cottage surprised me, with pretty beds, peaceful views and spotless bathrooms. The marvellous long barn-style lounge has a raised fireplace at one end, complete with wonky wooden beam. Comfortable wingback chairs and sofa make for long evenings by the fire with a bottle of Sherry and good company.

What I love about The Old Village, Citrusdal
• The commitment to the preservation of authentic and historical features
• Thick, whitewashed stone walls, thatched roofs, green window shutters and wooden ceiling beams
• Understated and stylish country decor
• The experience of staying on a working farm, complete with donkeys and tractors
• The convenient location, just off the N7, but without sounds of traffic and a feeling of being at a remote country retreat

Accommodation experience:
It can be difficult to transition straight from a hectic work life into a holiday space. And for me characterful accommodation provides a sensory transition into relaxation. This is what I found at The Old Village in Citrusdal. I had just received some disturbing feedback about a piece of work that I had done, and I felt uncomfortable in my own skin as I squirmed hard to escape the present. Yet the authentic buildings drew me out of my chaotic head space into their physical and grounding presence. As I wandered around the village cottages I could feel their wise ancient calm seep away my humiliation, leaving only a hint of sadness. The word humiliation has its roots in “humus”, to be grounded, and I found myself in a kind and comforting place to soften this fall.

Ever driving from Cape Town to Namaqualand (west coast area of Western Cape) on the N7. (This national road will be totally upgraded by August 2015 all the way to Clanwilliam 250kilos.)
Make sure you stop over at the "Old Village" in Citrusdal. This Hotel & Restaurant is at the foot of the Piekeniers Pass about 3kilos from Citrusdal.
Whilst here you can visit the Citrusdal Baths "hot spring spa" only 15kilos on paved road from the "Old Village". Hot springs water cures many ailments that affect office workers. Also a cold pool.
The food is exquisite all made by the chef Sonia Hager. The rooms are renovated (by the owner who is from Holland-Nederland) old buildings of a farm first started in 1725. (that's old for South Africa)
The town of Citrusdal is situate on the Olifants River which flows north into the Atlantic at Papendorp close by to Vredendal/Lutzville. Here are many good wine cellars that do tasting.
Lastly, if you go in mid-August to end August you are usually okay for seeing "wild flowers" that literally carpet the landscape in a variety of colours, orange pink purple white red & blue.
If you have one more night to stay try the village of Strandfontein. Absolutely amazing sunsets.

Had a fabulous overnight stop there, the accomodation in the cottage was superb. Fully self contained, spotless and comfortable. Lovely surroundings on the citrus farm overlooking the valley. We ate dinner at the restaurant at the village and that meal was excellent. Wished we could have stayed longer if we had realised it was going to be so nice.

Situated close to Citrusdal, this historic farm on Modderfontein is an absolute gem in the Cederberg. There are five individually decorated self-catering accommodations of which we had chosen the beautiful “Rooibos” cottage with its stunning antiques, period furniture, Chesterfield lounge suite and Persian carpets. The kitchen and living areas are enormous and both bedrooms are en-suite. The cottages are spotlessly clean and very well-equipped. The farm and cottages are steeped in history and you can actually feel the presence of the old world around you. The views of the Cederberg mountains from the cottage are stunning especially at sunset – sipping a sundowner gazing at pink and purple shaded mountains. Sonia is a super bubbly personality and we were warmly welcomed by her. You cannot pass Citrusdal without a stay-over at this wonderful destination. Thank you for a wonderful stay - We will most certainly return.

Took my partner and the 2 little ones.Spent the weekend and stayed in the Rooibos cottage. Man what a gem of a place. You want to escape noise and pollution then this is it. Extremely hot but luckily each room was air conditioned and there is a pool too.. Indoor fire place as well as outdoor braai. Sonia and Naomi were incredible hosts and did not bother us unless we needed something which we didn't as this a fully self catering cottage. Finished off the weekend with a Sunday buffet which Sonia had prepared. Beef pie, oxtail, curry and more(man can she cook) before we hit the road back to civilization. Thanks guys for making my girlfriends birthday such a memorable one.

What wonderful accommodation after being disappointed with our one night in Citrusdal. The Rooibos Cottage was delightful and very comfortable. There was a lot of attention to detail and we felt very welcone. Great food and certainly will be back next year when the flowers are in bloom.

We rang up on the way back from a days hiking and got there shortly before the kitchen closed. Had to reorder one of the very tasty starters because they got scoffed so quickly! Pizzas and pasta were delicious with really good veggie options. The wine was just as good and I left with jars of guava jam and fig konfyt - and plenty of pizza which we finished for lunch the next day. They don't do small portions! Highly recommended.

Our group was not happy with our treatment here. We were offered rooms with shared bathrooms, and one group of four had to travel over rough roads to very basic accommodation with a shared bathroom. Rooms were adequate, but not great, and obviously the accommodation had been overbooked for this evening. Food was quite good, rooms were clean, but grounds were in need of attention. Management clearly had not allowed for our group of 20 for this evening.

What a wonderful country experience. The owners and team took alot of time to make the cottage expierience warm and inviting. Thank you for that. The cottage (bain's) is luxurious yet steeped in history and down to earth. The old buildings in the natural environments are kept ro prestine condition. If you want to get away, this is the place. Peaceful and calm. Really good for the soul. Thank you. Chris van Dyk. Langebaan.
