We were apprehensive about security at the campsite, but the presence of a security guard overnight made us feel safer. The ablution blocks have recently been upgraded and look good and are well maintained. We had power at our campsite but it looks like it is hit and miss. We were fortunate that there was only a slight breeze, but if the winds are strong the campsites are very exposed.

We really enjoyed staying in the lighthouse right on Shark Island. It's run by Namibian Wildlife Resorts and the last time I booked it they gave it to someone else before we arrived so just be warned. We were thrilled though that we got to stay there this time.

The view from the top of the lighthouse is magical. The place itself was last decorated in about 1969 or 71 but the furniture is still in good condition. You'll want to wear your flip flops when walking on the carpet tiles but the beds were clean as were the bathrooms. Both bathrooms have very comfortable bathtubs with the wands so a person can take a shower. There is a kitchen that has a fridge and a person can actually cook and stay long-term is so inclined.

Our favourite part of the stay on the island was the view from the top of the lighthouse. The place is not expensive to rent.

We went to visit Luderitz during our 5 week road trip through Namibia.

We booked the lighthouse on Shark Island. How pleasantly surprised we were to find out that we had the prime spot in the town.

Although the furnishings were a little tired, our beds were tremendously comfortable, with soft percale bedding.

The kitchen was very basic and we only found the crockery etc hours after we had arrived. The things were in the cupboard in the passage rather than stored in the kitchen cupboards.

The panoramic view from the top of the lighthouse is awesome. I would recommend this accommodation if you are planning a trip to Luderitz.

You will be the " King of the castle."

We stayed in one of the 3 cottages. The places are in desperate need of maintenance as most of the windows cant even close anymore. A cleaning wont be a bad idea either. Don't think the floors have been vacuumed or mopped in months. The bathroom disgusting, very smelly toilet, and moldy shower. We were suppose to stay for 2 nights, but after one night decided to drive back to South Africa.
If you have no other place to stay.. Then go here.

One good thing about this place is the sunset!

Our group of 12 hired the three chalets of the Namibia Wildlife Resorts at Shark Island, Luderitz. Despite charging the same price as luxurious B&Bs in town, NWR offers no meals, no service and poorly-maintained and badly-managed rooms.

Our beds were left unmade for three days until complaints finally got some action. The rooms were never once swept out nor bathrooms or toilets cleaned until threats were made. I know these units are 'self-catering' but that means that you can cook meals in the kitchen, not that you have to clean the toilets and sweep the floor yourself.

The toilets and showers were in a disgusting state of disrepair with sharp-edged, broken floor tiles in the shower waiting to cut your feet if you didn't watch your step. (See pictures)

Management was indifferent, with a couldn't-care-less attitude typical of state-owned accommodation.

There is zero security for cars and we were warned to empty our cars to reduce the risk of break-ins. By comparison, B&Bs in town offer off-street secure parking and all-night security guards, not to mention spotless rooms, clean linen, beautiful en-suite bathrooms and huge, tasty breakfasts - all for the same price as we paid.

The bathroom is full of rusty plumbing, rising damp in the walls and flaking paint. There is no separate toilet, so if someone is showering you cannot get access to the toilet. Geysers are inadequate and next door guests had to come to our chalet for a hot shower.

Do not bother with Shark Island unless you literally have no other alternative whatsoever.

Booked Self catering accommodation via WHERE TO STAY for 3 nights at 360pppn. Was informed that the price increased to 1500 pppn and now included Dinner (which I did not request). This increased the cost 5 times!!!!!!!!

They think this is perfectly acceptable and is refusing to pay back my deposit even though the booking is 6 months in advance!!!!!

I wonder if this is a scam to take peoples money without having to do anything for it ????

We arrived late afternoon and were checked in promptly by a smiling gate keeper.
Yes the accomodation had a slightly musty smell, probably because of its close
proximity to the sea.The view is absolutely magnificent, the furnishings appear to have been left behind by the last lighthouse keeper. The beds were comfortable, and the linens spotless. The bathrooms had a plentiful supply of hot water and the kitchen was
adequately equipped for self catering. Also dined at Barrels, good food at a fair price.

We arrived in Luderitz on a Friday and booked in at Island Cottage on Shark Island. Very clean and a charming, helpful owner. Had a few drinks and supper at Barrels Pub. Great service and good value food. That's the good news!
We soon discovered that most places in Luderitz close on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. With the exception of the Nest Hotel you cannot find any half decent place for a meal. We expected to find a German Delicatessen or Butcher but no such luck. There are two scruffy small Supermarkets if you are really desperate.
There are two Restaurant/Pub establishments in the tatty harbour area. The one down stairs is a two star establishment and the one upstairs must have the most disinterested staff I've encountered. Plan your trip to avoid weekends
However, the history and architecture in Luderitz makes it a definite must see place. Coastways Tours do a very interesting and worthwhile trip to Bogenfels and the abandoned mining town of Pomona. A full day 250Km desert drive.
Overall we would rate Luderitz as a 'must see' but feel let down by the service industry.

We stayed in the Light House on Shark Island. I enjoyed our stay very much. It is quite old though, so the carpets are old and the bathrooms are old, BUT everything worked. Our linen were fresh and soft. There is one mother of a fridge in the kitchen. We were once again received very friendly at the gate. At first we were a bit worried, it almost sounded like our booking was not confirmed, BUT all worked out (very quickly) and we could spend a night in a light house. One can climb all the way to the top of the roof and have beautiful view of the whole of Luderitz. We were warned about the vicious wind on Shark Island but we were fortunate with a wind-free day!!!

We camped at the island for two nights the bathrooms can do with a coat of paint looking rather neglected but enjoyed the stay anyway. The gentleman who was on site ensured we were comfortable and every morning he would be there to greet us!

I don't know if there is a closed parking for motorcycles. I didn't see it. Anyway, the best thing you can do is to contact with NWR directly. I am sure they will kindly help you. Have a nice trip and enjoy the wonderful country that Namibia is!
