Location is about 5 minutes walk to the night market or ten minutes to the town centre., So plenty of local options close by if you don't want to have dinner at the restaurant Hotel which is Italian. Swimming pool is open 8am to 8pm. And the Bar goes have a happy hour and serves until 11pm.
Breakfast was OK. More on the sweet sides with plenty of cakes and fruits. Some ham and cheese and bread. No eggs. But overall OK.
Most of The staff were a bit of a let down I feel. Not really enthusiastic, friendly or helpful. This is the only thing which needs improvement. They did book us our driver and transfers as requested.
The only thing that put me off is the behavior of some of the staff. Most of them especially in the Reception area are quite unfriendly and unhelpful.
Over all experience is good 👍
The hotel is only minimally maintained, if you step closer than 10m to things nothing looks like the pictures. Our door did not close properly (~1cm gap between door and door frame), the air conditioning is half broken.
Minimal breakfast, if you ask for something like eggs you have to pay extra (in cash of course).
Last but not least: cleaning staff steals.
I would keep my distance from this place
However, the place lacked soul and warmth that we ha e become accustomed to in other places in Argentina.
Although I am certain the management has its reasons, the extensive list of house rules was a bit off putting.
Stayed at La Sorgente Hote in Iguazu for 2 nights in late May 2006. Paid $150 Argentine pesos ($48 USD when I was there) total per night with taxes for a room with 3 beds.
The rooms were attractive and mostly clean--probably 2 star by US standards. There were a few bugs in the shower but I think it was mainly because the window in the shower did not close air tight so this was unavoidable. Just little gnat type things that flew in the window cracks--not huge cockroaches or anything. Overall I still left feeling like it was a clean hotel.
The location was central enough to the town that we had plenty of dinner options within walking distance (6 to 8 block radius)--although make sure you look at a map because the town is not layed out in a perfect grid so it is easy to accidently walk in a big circle to get to the center of town if you don't know where you are going.
There were 2 computers with internet access in the lobby that were available to guests. They also had Wi-Fi available in some of the rooms. The room I had was located almost directly above the lobby and got a strong signal. I would tell them at check in if you plan on using the Wi-Fi so they can give you a room that gets a good signal.
The room had air conditioning but not heating. It was in the 50s at night while we were there and it got pretty chilly. I'm sure that a/c is much more important than heat at most times of the year in the Iguazu region but you may want to consider this depending on when you are travelling.
The last thing I would say is that I don't really know how well they speak English there. I'm not saying that they don't but I was travelling with 2 Spanish speakers and we communicated with the hotel staff completely in Spanish. I believe some other posters have said that they don't speak very much English but I can't verify that either way. Maybe someone else who has stayed here could confirm/deny this.
Pro's:
- Arrived at 9.45am and checked us in immediately at no extra charge.
- The girl on reception who speaks excellent English is so helpful and polite. A real asset to the place and made us feel so welcome whenever we saw her.
- Free internet
- Tv in room
- Arranged taxi collection at airport and trip to Brazil side of Falls on morning we arrived at very fair price. All worked smoothly and they sorted this very efficiently by e-mail in advance. It prevented mucking around when we arrived so enhanced trip.
- Their taxi service to/from airport is cheaper than the standard taxi tariff !!
- Rooms are good size and bathroom are fine.
- A/C works fine as is essential.
- 5 min walk to towncentre
Cons:
- They still don't take credit card but they have learned from complaints as e-mail you in advance and have large sign up at reception. Be aware that ATM's sometimes have monetary withdrawal limit (and this may worsen with financial crisis) and there are queues so make sure you have enough cash if coming in from BA.
- Swimming pool whilst it looks pleasant is quite murky and for some reason it is not filled up fully. It is 1m in deep end and about 0.3m in shallow end (that was in first week of Jan 09). Having said this, still pleasant to sit round and dip into cool off. And you are there to view Iguazu Falls and not lounge around the pool.
Tips:
a) Try La Rueda restaurant on same street as hotel (about 10 mins walk) as it is excellent and seems a notch above all others.
b) If you are British, still dead easy to do Falls from Brazil side without visa. Hotel taxi took us to Brazil side and sorted out border formalities in about a minute whilst it looked chaos for those on tour buses.
c) You really do not need to book on an organised tour to Falls for either Brazil or Argentina side. I have visited them in 2002/2003 and 2009 (yes, they are worth 3 trips) and I would suggest that this would detract from your experience as they can add nothing but hassle. Watching the tours to Brazilian side there was lots of mucking around at border whilst we took a minute. They can't tell you anything as it is a visual experience. On Brazil side, the taxi driver drops you off at Visitor Centre Entrance and it cold not be easier. It only takes a few hours. On Argentina side, it is a whole day needed and if you are like me, then I detest walking around in a tour group with someone holding an umbrella in the air whilst being constantly held up by the slowest member of group !! A tour guide really cannot add anything at all as you are given a map and it is so well signposted.
d) On Argentina side, you must pay in Arg pesos for park entrance fee (60 pesos).
e) On Argentina side, you MUST do the circuito superior, circuito inferior and gargantua del diablo as all are magnificent.
f) Park opens at 8am in summer - I was there on Jan 7th and it was heaving so get there at 8am. It's worth the early breakfast.
g) Do not miss the boat trip on Argentina side under the falls as it is unforgettable although you will get soaked (the one to take is the 75 peso trip which I thing is called the Aventura Nautica or similar) - go there in the morning by 10am at latest (it takes at least 30 mins from site entrance) or there will be queues.
h) The drinks/food in the park are at OK prices so don't worry too much about taking food in.
La Sorgente itself is quite beautiful and unique: the hotel has a large open pool area (with a small bridge over the pool), gorgeous tropical plants and flowers, and multiple outdoor seating areas to relax (by the pool and all around the grounds). The room was basic, with nothing special, but the television, AC, shower, sinks all worked fine. The bed was quite large and comfortable enough. The rooms are also much larger than I expected. The only issue that I had was the wifi; it didn't work great in my room and I had to move to the lobby to access the internet (this could be due to my particular room location, but it's worth noting).
There is also a very good and popular Italian restaurant on site. An extra bonus is the bar outside the restaurant that you can access from the garden-pool area. A great place to grab a drink and hang out after dinner.
I highly recommend La Sorgente. It's a unique charming little place, close to town, and a quick taxi to the park. If you can tolerate the minor connectivity issues, it's an excellent value for the money.
