Owner-managed and blissfully private, Majeka House is an ideal base from which to explore the historical town of Stellenbosch with its interesting shops, galleries, museums, and alfresco café culture. Numerous famous vineyards and award-winning restaurants, dotted along the Stellenbosch wine route, are within striking distance. This prime location combines with luxurious accommodation, thoughtful service, a sophisticated bar and restaurant, a professionally run spa and spacious grounds to create what is undoubtedly one of the most stylish boltholes in the Cape Winelands. After extensive renovations and a designer makeover in 2011, Majeka House now boasts 22 rooms and sophisticated yet witty interiors. There are two new luxury mountain suites above the main hotel with large mountain-view balconies, and three new junior garden suites overlooking a shared, exclusive-use pool area. And, while the entire hotel is ‘parent friendly’, there’s also a fully self- contained villa – set apart from the main hotel and with a large private pool and garden – that is designed specifically with families in mind. The new suites were all conceptualised and decorated by interior design wunderkind Etienne Hanekom, who is also responsible for the award-winning interiors of Makaron Restaurant, the lobby and bar. They capture a sense of drama with boldcolours, rich textures and eye-catching custom-designed wallpapers but are also comfortable, inviting spaces for complete rest and relaxation. All contain thoughtful extras, such as comfy Crocs instead of hotel slippers, a Lavazza espresso machine, Wi-Fi internet and a DVD player with a wide choice of movies. The spacious and cleverly designed en suite bathrooms are fragrant with local toiletries made with indigenous plant extracts. In Makaron Restaurant, a stylish, contemporary interior using a clever mix of repurposed and recycled furniture complemented by modern statement pieces has been created. The result is a visually stimulating space that offers extreme comfort and encourages complete immersion in the dining experience. The overall effect is an understated feeling of luxury.Airy and light, the restaurant overlooks lush gardens and leads onto a sheltered terrace for alfresco dining. It is in this stimulating setting that resident chef Tanja Kruger presents her menu of fresh, modern cuisine grounded in the French classics.

We had a lovely stay at Majeka House, we loved our room with our private pool(a little to cold to go in :-) but made use of the heated pool at the main area of the hotel. The staff were so helpful offered to order Uber and wine-tasting during our stay. The food was fantastic, bar was lovely and cosy with a blazing fire. Only 10 minutes into the centre of Stellenbosch. Look forward to staying with you again in the future.

What a disgusting hotel. I arrived in a room that had severe mould damage and smell. LOOK at my PHOTOS below—thick dust under the bed. The pool was not warm, and the jacuzzi was STILL out of order. Very Run down hotel with staff that never apologised once when approached about the severe mould and water damage. My 6 month old and wife had to try find a place after arriving late to this terrible room that they clearly thought was ok for a 5 star guest house. Who in their right mind has the audacity to expect people to sleep in a room like this. Not normal behaviour

Response from General Manager, General Manager at Majeka House
Responded 01 Oct 2023
Good Day. Thank you for your review, we value each and every review. We are sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with the state of the room that you were allocated and apologize for the experience and inconvenience. We can assure you that this is not the way we want to portray the property to our guests, and I have investigated the sate of the room personally with our maintenance team. We have experienced heavy rain in the last week and this has subsequently added to the water damage inside the walls and this room specifically was affected heavily. The dust under the bed was discussed with our housekeeping team and they were instructed to make sure that this does not happen again. We are currently fixing the jacuzzi, that has a leak underneath the floorboard, which resulted in the repair company having to lift it out completely to find the fault. The inside heated pool will unfortunately loose heat when we have longer loadshedding periods, which was the case. We currently have inverter batteries for back up power but they cannot reheat the pool in time when the loadshedding stages reach 4 hours or more on a regular basis. We inform our guest accordingly before this happens if we get notified in time. I hope that we can welcome you back to Majeka House in the near future to showcase what the property is known for and should look like. Kind Regards, General Manager

We had a very average stay at Majeka House in April this year while attending a 50th function of a friend of ours. They had no generator in place to accommodate guests with loadshedding and so as a result we had darkness on leaving in the evening and waking up in the morning, no tea or coffee was possible in our rooms, hairdrying for an event impossible and a very average breakfast as they could not make coffee or hot food. For the price of this hotel I would have expected a far better experience. WE woke in the morning to pouring rain and there were leaks all over the hotel, so clearly not well maintained at all. I don't think we will be staying there again in a hurry.

Since Covid, we’ve noticed many establishments are taking a while to return to “ normal service “ Majeka House is one of those. Over past years, we’ve stayed in one of their “Mountain view” rooms- excellent outside space/terrace, and wonderful to enjoy a coffee, read a book, star gaze at night with a glass of wine. This time we were shown to an average room, with a small outside space , and minimal view. We were most disappointed, said we were returning clients, had recommended Majeka to several friends, and would be highly unlikely to return. Their response was less than acceptable “we’re fully booked”, we could possibly switch rooms after a few days, etc, etc. ABSOLUTE RUBBISH! There were very few guests, and the Staff simply couldn’t be bothered. Finally we were shown two other rooms, one of which was acceptable. Service at breakfast was slow, and it would have been quicker for me to pop into the kitchen and refill my coffee myself- staff lolling around aimlessly, with three receptionists squeezed behind a desk, trying to look busy. Around the garden area, nobody asked if we wanted a drink, cleaned away used glasses or presented us with a bill. I read numerous Tripadvisor reviews from October 2022 to date, and most noted poor/lethargic service. On trying to pay for drinks, I pointed out the crap reviews, and how I agreed with them. Then SOMETHING HAPPENED! Whizz service at breakfast, staff moving their derrières, a new buzz about the place! It’s only when I checked out, that I appreciated the cause. The Owner/Boss was on site, his office door open to feel the “ vibe”, and obviously a guy that runs and efficient establishment. Hopefully this is an indication “Normal Service Resumed”

Dear David R, Thank you for sharing your experience at our hotel with us. We always recognise return guests and are excited to welcome them back. You booked a Mountain View on your previous stay. This is a third highest category. This time you booked our entry level room. We would normally upgrade our loyal guests depending on availability. Unfortunately we were fully booked on the day you arrived. We had availability in a higher room category after 2 nights of your stay. We explained mentioned that we would operationally be able to upgrade you on the 3rd day. This was our best possible option as we would not downgrade guests who paid fully for their accommodation. We apologise for the slow service at breakfast. Normally when we are fully booked and all guests come for breakfast at the same time, service tends to be slow. We have noted your comment on slow service in the garden and are working on it. We look forward to seeing you again on your return to Stellenbosch. Kind regards, Wonder Satiya General Manager

Quiet hotel just outside of Stellenbosch and catered to day spa mainly when we were there. Staff were very helpful and we really did not agree with some of the previous reviews about the service, which we found to be the best bit of the hotel. Garden room was fine, but as with the rest of the hotel it is need of a general spruce up as it is rather tired in appearance and needs some TLC. The pool area and garden area are great and if you are in need of some peace and quiet, then this is your place for you. The food was generally good, especially the breakfasts...but there needs to be more choice on the lunch and dinner menus; rather limited and more snacks are needed. Over all a pretty decent hotel with friendly and helpful staff.

Let me start out by saying I loved Majeka house and was returning for my 4th or 5th stay. We’ve taken people along before and referred several. My wife and I made a booking to celebrate our anniversary- it was our first choice, we’re Cape Town based. The reservation system doesn’t offer flexible bookings. Long story short, my daughter who is 9 year got sick. We couldn’t go. We communicated in good time and was able to rechedule initially. My daughter is still not well and again in good time contacted the hotel to either postpone ( dates available on the website were not available through their contact Centre) or get a voucher - the bookings are not inexpensive. Naj- who responded and I quote “ Thank you for the below e-mail sent, as per discussion with Management regrettably we will not be able to offer a Voucher as it is not possible to amend the dates. The reservation will incur 100% cancellation penalty of cancelled.” I ended up giving the booking to a friend so as to not entirely forfeit what I’d paid. No issue there. I’m so disappointed as this was a hotel I loved and would have returned to several times in the future. I’m an attempt to salvage this, I contacted the manager - which in itself was not easy. Reception staff will not put you through nor give his contact details - just a generic email address. When I eventually get hold of the manager - I was able to obtain his details on threat of recording the call and the receptionists dogged responses - he was apologetic- asked that I send details as despite what we’d been told by outsourced staff, the hotels policy was in fact to look after returning guests and this would be resolved. I was offered breakfast. How can this be compared to the lost cost of the booking and our willingness to be flexible to make use of the booking? Which is correct - did Naj speak to management or did they change their mind? Either way, a loyal and returning guest has been lost and I’ll now have to find somewhere else to spend my money. Such a pity. So disappointed. As with so many things in life, its how one manages things when things go wrong that define you and not when things go according to plan.

Dear Travelmatt79, Thank you for taking time to review your reservation experience on this platform. We appreciate your loyalty and would have liked to see you again for the 3rd time. We sympathise with you on this sickness of your daughter. Wishing her speedy recovery. You postponed your booking twice and on the third time our reservations team wanted some kind of proof. We believe this is normal to ask. We have a policy not to share private cell phone numbers for management, staff and any other person in our work place. This is normal in most workplace hence our staff would not share my personal number with our guests. When we spoke on the telephone I offered another postponement at no cost but you said you already gifted someone your accommodation and there was no going back. In light of this, we extended a free breakfast to you and family. You would not take it unfortunately for the reasons you knw. We wish you the best and again speedy recovery to your daughter. Kind regards, Wonder Satiya General Manager

If you expect a stylish design hotel with Majeka House, disappointment will be real. The hotel must have had a very talented photographer for its website - the stylisch rooms look in reality as if they are in dire need of a renovation and the pool area might have been chic in the 90ies. While the staff has always been friendly, there is massive room for improvement. Be it the waiting time for the coffee in the mornings, empty chocolate wrappings from previous guests that could be found in our room or lenghty discussions with the staff to organise a private driver for a vineyard tour. Picking up the manager‘s suggestion that the hotel could arrange for a driver as Uber were not reliable in that area, we were told several times that someone would approach us (never happened). After inquiring several times, a driver was arranged - who however did never turn up. End of story: We ubered from vineyard to vineyard which was considerably cheaper and absolutely no problem. The generator which was working only half of the time added to the unpleasant experience. If you want to enjoy beautiful Stellenbosch, then my strong recommendation is to book another hotel. It will save you nerves and time to rather focus on the lovely city of Stellenbosch and its beautiful surroundings.

Dear CarC17, We are sad to read of your disappointment at our hotel. While we take note of your comment that our rooms need some TLC, we would also like to make it clear that the photographs on our website and some which our guests have taken are not edited. They depict what we have. We apologise for the inconvenience in arranging the driver for you and are glad Uber worked for you in winelands which is normally difficult to get Uber in the farms. It is sad you are not coming back, we would have loved to see you back at renewed Majeka House. Kind regards, Wonder Satiya General Manager.
