Great venue, family run feel and friendly, home cooked meals was nice. Large single table dining room was nice as you engage with other guests. Relaxed feeling with honesty bar and help yourself. Easy access from Cape Town and to other wine farms. Host very welcoming and friendly. Historic building with its quirks so very nice. One of standard rooms off main dining area, so if not an early riser, select free standing units. Very relaxed place for a stay. Loved it.

Hawksmoor was beautiful, just a stunning location and amazing staff. This was the second time we visited and it did not disappoint. Due to being bumped off our flight, we were a day late arriving and the care and hospitality extended to my parents in my absence was above and beyond. Lovely food, comfortable beds and a glorious shower. The gardens are so peaceful and the pool just lovely. A home away from home and a wonderful place to relax.

This was the luckiest find ever. I travel a lot globally and this was such an exceptional change from staying in standard hotels. Nothing is too much trouble, I felt so well looked after it really was like home from home. Thank you so much 😊. I will be back next time I'm in CT.

We were booked there for one night before our flight back to US. We may have had a different experience if our rooms in the "edge house" had water; we saw them and they looked renovated (but no AC). Since no water to the rooms, we were moved into "Classic Rooms" in the manor and dairy house. No towels so we had to walk through the house at night opening doors and cupboards as no one there to assist; upholstered chairs have ripped arms, no AC, dead flowers in two of our rooms with dirty old water in the vases, and someone's shoes were under the chair in my room. The place is locked up with a gate but they fail to give you the code. Fairly certain my family will add some reviews with pics to document all this. One of my party actually took a taxi to another hotel - we should have followed. Bottom line: avoid.

Response from Jeandre Louw, General Manager at Hawksmoor House at Matjieskuil Farm
Responded 08 Feb 2024
Dear Mr Jim Rielly, Many thanks for your valued feedback on your stay with us at Hawksmoor House, we value all feedback as it creates an opportunity for us to improve. we pride ourselves on creating a home away from home experience welcoming guests into our very special and unique property and want them to leave as part of the Hawksmoor Family. We are very disappointed that we had to move you to the Classic rooms and wish to apologize that your welcome was tainted by the rooms that you originally booked that had no water feed due to reasons out of our control. luckily, we were able to move you to rooms that had backup water tanks and could Provide you with rooms that had water. The gate details and property orientation was explained to the guests that was booked in the Villa as part of your group and they informed that they will carry over the information to the rest of the group as everyone was in a bit of a rush to get out for dinner. we are so sorry that this information never reached you. due to the last minute move we might have dropped the ball on minor housekeeping aspects as this was last minute rooms that were rushed through to have them available for your group, we understand that these minor things had a major effect on your stay and thus offered complimentary wine and drinks as another token of our apology, we have put forward a standard that all rooms should be 200% even if they are not occupied this will prevent this from happening in the future. Rest assured we have implemented several measures and upgrades to avoid this from happening again. we hope to welcome you back to Hawksmoor in future. Kindest Regards Jeandre Louw

The property has a beautiful setting, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. However, the rooms left a lot to be desired. The beds were uncomfortable, making it hard to get a good night's sleep, and the overall quality of the room didn't meet expectations. With some updates to the accommodations, this place could be much more enjoyable

We fully agree with the previous response. Old and dilapidated glory! Room, which is located in the common hall, smells musty and is not ventilated! Old and broken furniture. Pool very poorly maintained and does not invite to use this. The same applies to the sunbeds, old, dirty and dilapidated. 20 km away at the first restaurant! We had booked two nights, but only used one breakfast, which was fine by the way. On to the next sleeping address!

The estate is beautiful but is now in a state of "gone glory".
All buildings are in need of renovation, the garden is beautiful but there is shepherd of old materials.
Room is stately but there are too many things that are just not; chandelier lights broken, dirty rug on ground, decoration broken.
There is a swimming pool which does not look attractive to take a dip; dirty water, also this could use paint, protective plate pump is next to it so large hole, etc
Outdoor furniture looks nice, old iron chairs but does not sit comfortably for sunbathing.
Employees were trained to be friendly, lacked any spontaneity.
Bed was fine and everything was clean.
Breakfast was good.

A beautiful property & a privilege to stay somewhere so steeped in history.
The hosts are taking great care to restore the property sympathetically & I think it’s still a work in progress with more to do.
It’s a place to relax. No tech: no tvs or decent WiFi but a digital detox can be a good thing.
Hosts are delightful & accommodating.

From the onset the property manager was welcoming and friendly. Breakfast's were international standard and the hospitality received was world class. Having come with family from overseas we were all blown away with the history and features of the property.

Unpolite welcome by Manager Brown.
During loadshedding we were left with 3 candles!
Rechargeable lamps would have done a huge improvement.
This was first time during visits to the farmlands where no alternatives were made to
overcome the loadshedding.
Nice bathrooms and friendly staff.

Response from Lloyd Brown, General Manager at Hawksmoor House at Matjieskuil Farm
Responded 29 Mar 2023
Hello Mr Fritz , Many thanks for your valued feedback on your stay with us at Hawksmoor House. We are very disappointed that you found your stay overrated and felt your welcoming was unpolite , we endeavour to provide us much information on check in as possible to provide you the right information while at the property , you where very dissatisfied about loadshedding while it was being mentioned, during your check in process which can be annoying as any South African would attest , but is also something we have no control over regardless of if you where aware of loadshedding or not prior to travelling to South Africa as you exclaimed ,we do however provide candles to add to the ambiance of the historic building that you where staying in as opposed to LeD rechargeable lighting , but are in the process of getting alternate power installed to mitigate the discomfort of loadshedding which seems will remain with South Africa for a while. We do apologies that the property didn’t meet your expectations and appreciate the good feedback too. Kind Regards Lloyd Brown
