This was our fourth visit to Bellevue Manor and it was fantastic as ever. Pretty and comfortable accommodation, stunning views, excellent breakfasts, and lovely pool which was great when the temperature hit the mid 30's last week! Thanks Etienne for your warm hospitality, and we look forward to our next visit.

I returned for a third stay at Bellevue and my holiday was as fantastic as ever. What an incredible setting!

Bellevue is a working wine farm and country manor with an incredible property right in the heart of wine country. Their pool has an incredible view of the mountains and the property is surrounded with beautifully maintained gardens. Each cottage is surrounded by rows of grape vines, lavender bushes, and rosemary plants, which sets the scene for a great stay in the winelands.

The location is great for exploring Stellenbosch, based right off of Route 44 (which is also the name of the wine produced on the Bellevue farm). The hotel is right in the heart of the winelands with some great restaurants nearby, and a darling antique store right next door to the hotel.

I took a lot of pictures of the property this year because I noticed that the photos online simply do not do it justice for how gorgeous it is!

As returning visitors we dare to book a 15 days stay at Bellevue Manor Guesthouse this February. As we expected on forehand we had a great stay. Every cottage has its own entrance, wich make your stay very private. Bellevue Manor is situated near the R44, wich can effect some traffic noise if you stay in cottages 7 and 8 (although you have the most privacy in these cottages). But from all cottages the view of the lawn, the vineyard, the pool and the Cape Dutch manor house is excellent.
And there is another plus, named space! Our 6 year old daughter could run, play and splash in the pool and noboby had any unconvenience. She turned into a little farm girl making a stroll with the dogs everyday.

The service of Debi and her staff was very helpfull after hour daughter got sick after a swimm with the pinguins at Boulders Beach. With a clean bed and a specialy made breakfast for her she was in no time a happy girl again.

I don't know where to begin with this review. Firstly, I do not think it merits 4 stars as awarded by the SA tourist authority. The cottages, located a short walk from the main house where you eat breakfast are very close to the main R44 road, with cars & motor bikes travelling at 100KM plus, so imagine the noise at night. You need ear plugs. Purchased the following day!

It takes the virtual booking on line experience all the way. You arrive, and you better not have forgotten the code for the electric gate which you are given upon payment of your deposit/full holiday amount, as without it you cannot enter the premises. We could not find our code, but despite the fact that we had paid in full, the man at the other end of the intercom did not want to let us in and said we had to have the code, so we rustle through our booking information and luckily, find the said code, so could enter the premises. What would he have said to us had we not been able to find the entry code?

We enter our cottage, which is spacious, but rustic, and on first appearances looks clean. The bathroom tiles to the shower cubicle were cracked and needed to be replaced along with the sealant. The net curtain to the window needed a wash as did the curtain pole. The suite although old, was clean, as were the towels which appeared new.
The bedding was clean.

As we noted how noisy the room was, we called the duty manager. We were told that the noise would dampen down after 8.30 pm as it was the traffic leaving Stellenbosch, on a Friday evening. The traffic does not dampen down. At around 1 am we switched on the A/C in an attempt to muffle the noise. After mentioning the noise in the room you would have thought that maybe someone would have knocked on the door to introduce themselves, but alas no. We had no contact with the management during our 3 night stay.

The cottage I think would be very cold in the cooler months as the doors have an considerable gap at the top and the wind will whistle through. There is a fire place but an additional 25 rand is asked for 6 pieces of wood, if you decide to have a fire. A little cheeky, you wouldn't expect to pay to use a radiator in a room.

Do take a book with you, as the TV is very old, - no satellite service, or internet in the rooms. The magazines on the pine table consisted of complimentary magazines from the middle east & the Dubai addition of Hello. They are hardly current issues, with the oldest being 10 years old and the Beckhams just announcing baby #3 on it's way. Maybe that's why nobody meets and greets you - they are in Dubai!

Response from BellevueManor, Manager at Bellevue Manor Guesthouse
Responded 06 Jun 2012
Our humble appologies for these guest feeling not so positive about their stay at Bellevue. Let me clarify a few points and hopefully they can feel better about it. -We have regular guests staying continuously with us all year around, probably around 50% of our occupancy. If the road noise was that disturbing, im very sure guests would never return. If you are indeed a very light sleeper, i can offer you earplugs, but we are no different to any other guesthouse located in town or on the R44. -Bellevue manor employs 2 managers rotating each other, and it's impossible that these guests were not greeted and welcomed at breakfast in the morning as only one of our managers unlocks the office and serves breakfast each morning. -Being a guesthouse and not a 5* property, we are not required to have 24hr staff on duty, so we always give guests a gate code and room key details should they be arriving after office hours and usually guests are fine with this arrangement. However, due to security reasons, we cannot just open the gate after hours to anybody who asks, and we always ask security questions first before we open the gate. A procedure im sure you will appreciate as an in-house guest to ensure optimum safety. -We appreciate positive criticism very much and take it seriously. We have since done maintenance on the bathrooms with regards to the tiles and grouting. We have also upgrade our televisions to new flat screens and we indeed have the M-net satellite service together with the SABC television channels and e-tv in each room. We also generally upgraded the gardens and interior decorating of all the cottages, offering a newer, upgraded, refreshing look. -Previous guest sometimes leaves their magazines and books behind, and we just assumed it would be interesting reading materials for other guests too, but obviously not, so we have removed any older magazines and reading materials from the rooms, only leaving the newer one's. appologies for this. -We pride ourselves on our cleanliness of our linen and suites and to truly be a "home" away from home to all our guests. 95% of our guests are very happy, returning guests and this should speak volumes. We appologise about this very unfortunate rare incident where guests were not feeling happy, and i hope we have rectified everything possible to ensure that this does not happen again. We look forward to welcoming you to Bellevue Manor Guesthouse & Wellness retreat soon to proof to you that we do take our guest and their comments seriously and to ensure a pleasurable stay!

Beautiful Cape Dutch cottages in wonderful setting. Yes, Stellenbosch has developed and the R44 is close. It is more a drone in the background and not an issue.

Breakfast excellent. We travel extensively in Latin and South America and they know how to do desayuno, but Bellevue was great.

Cottages were great. I have noted complaints re small BR and our neighbour complained about his shower head. To the hosts I say do not worry about these people, all was excellent.

We had a terminally ill family member stay for a night. Dirk, Monaco and Debi you're absolutely unbelievable and went way beyond normal hospitality to cater to him.

The gorgeous scenery we know well but we will forever remember the kindness you showed to our family. We hope to see you again.

We had a nice stay at the Bellevue guesthouse manor in Stellenbosch.
Beautiful garden with view on the vineyards including some small swimming pool! The only thing we could have asked for would have been some wood for the fire place inside or out. Rest very well!
Would go again.

I can seriously recommend the Bellevue Manor to go to if you need to find yourself again. The rooms are spacious and well kept. The view is beautiful and the atmosphere peaceful. I had a wonderful time restoring my mind and body, relaxing not just at the ChiChi spa, but also just sitting outside by the pool or on my patio. Debbie and Ettiene and their staff are professional, yet their personal touch makes you feel right at home. The breakfast served was more than adequate, and you will not go hungry. If you have the time and money, book yourself in at the spa. It will be well worth the money spend. Debbie's products used at the spa are amazing. I have a super sensitive skin, and for the first time in my life I had a facial that didn't leave my face in shock, and the lotions used on my body did not in the least affect me. I will go back as soon as I can! Thank you for the wonderful time. This mommy came home with her batteries fully charged. Regards, Lulu

We had a lovely 3 nights here earlier in the month. It is just off of the R44, but due to it being surrounded by vineyards, it was very quiet and relaxing. Our room opened out on to the back garden and pool. This was perfect place to relax after visiting a few wineries in the areas, as our boys were able to enjoy the pool and we could relax with a glass of wine!

Rooms were very spacious and comfortable. They do an excellent breakfast, and we were able to have a bbq by the pool in their built in stone oven/bbq. Highly recommend it.

Etienne, if you are reading this, it only took us 5 and 1/2 hours to get to Knysna. :-)
