If you’re looking for that rare blend of contemporary comfort and old-fashioned hospitality, Summerwood Guesthouse is the perfect base from which to explore the soulful town of Stellenbosch and surrounding winelands. This late-Edwardian grand dame was built in 1904 and has since been creatively renovated to cater for the cosmopolitan tastes of the modern traveller. With its large swimming pool and location in a leafy suburb of Stellenbosch, Summerwood has become the go-to choice for visitors looking for something less formal than a hotel, but more luxurious than your run-of-the-mill guesthouse. The eight spacious rooms boast upmarket finishes and are tastefully decorated in neutral tones, while nice extras like bicycles with which to explore the charming town, air-conditioning, free WiFi, and secure off-street parking make it hard to compete with Summerwood in terms of value for money. This family-run guesthouse is a lush haven for the sophisticated traveller that seamlessly integrates the privacy and comfort of a guesthouse with the professionalism of friendly, efficient service. We are ideally situated in the JSRA Jonkershoek special rates area which provides additional security to the neighbourhood.

Detailed Reviews
A very relaxed guesthouse with 8 rooms and a great garden. In contrast to many B & B's in South Africa, the pool was big enough to swim in.
Our room (6) was spacious with all amenities (Tea, coffee, airco, good hairdryer etc..) The breakfasts were made fresh, to order - reminded us of Australia with delicious items such as crushed avocado on sourdough with eggs or salmon etc..
Fiona kindly booked us in for dinner and restaurants were within a good walking distance (20 minutes) - we also felt very safe here.
We'd certainly return here and recommend to friends - great place to relax!

I wouldn’t pick anywhere else to stay in the lush, energetic town of Stellenbosch than the Summerwood Guest House. Fiona and Paulet’s environment reflects their hospitality-relaxed, but impeccably clean, bright, organized, comfortable. Our family of four enjoyed three of the rooms at the guesthouse—each fresh, comfortable and quiet. I like the location being close to the downtown activity, but far enough to feel removed from the party noise (expected as the new university session kicked off) happening close by. Summerwood is an oasis, close enough to the wonderful restaurants and wine farms to feel like staying for an extended time. Bikes for riding were a bonus. The poolside lounge chairs and the bunnies in the garden add an element of whimsy to down time on a holiday. And the breakfasts on the garden patio were lovely and delicious—accommodating for my vegan tendencies as well (!) As a bonus, our hosts helped us navigate many of our travel needs. We were visiting from the US, so needed transport and testing (Covid-19) and were well directed. With so many details of travel complicated by the Pandemic, Fiona was by our side, helping us make this part of our travel plan easy and fulfilling.

Coming back to beautiful SA Winelands and this dreamy guesthouse after two years time, seeing all the changes that have been made, the dedication and hospitality of our hosts, makes my heart bloom. 2 years ago we visited Summerwood Guesthouse and have been quite disappointed, unfortunately. But, instead of just not caring, our host Paulet did reach out to us in such a honest, warm and understandable way that we decided to give it another go. So we did and now, we couldn’t be sadder to leave this wonderful hidden SA gem. So, don’t worry if this review just sounds to good to be true, cause it isn’t. It’s my very own opinion and I can happily confirm that none of the issues from my 2 years ago review are still up today.
First to say, if you do visit the SA winelands and have some time, I would at least plan about 5-6 days around here. And no worries, if you also do need to do some online work while on holidays, the Summerwood WiFi is very sufficient ;-) Stellenbosch is a beautiful university town with a lot to offer around and Summerwood is the perfect home away from home to get back after long days of exploring, wine tasting and soaking up all the impressions. Plus, it is 15min walk from the center which makes it even more relaxing and you can enjoy a nice walk before dinner. We stayed here for 3 nights (next time I would rather go for the full 6). Upon arrival our hosts Paulet and Fiona gave us such a warm welcome and showed us around.
The house in real is just as beautiful as it is on the pictures, so you don’t have to worry about that. There is a beautiful garden with little rabbits which just makes it more picture perfect.
The guesthouse does have different rooms to offer on the upper floors with nice views over the mountain, but we decided on a ground floor room with a little private terrace which I can definitely recommend. Rooms (incl. bathrooms) are of very good size (actually big!), beautifully decorated, very clean and have nice little extras like the USB Slots next to the bed etc. Pool towels are provided. Usually I am not much of a breakfast person but please take your time for the granola/yoghurt and the egg dishes (“smash it up” with avo!!!). The staff is very friendly and our hosts always made time to have a little chat or give you advise/ recommendations for what to do and where to eat.
All together we felt very very much at home. Summerwood truly is a place you shouldn’t miss when visiting the winelands.

We visited the guesthouse for 3 nights. It has been a wonderful stay. Fiona took great care of us. She serves a very nice breakfast, also accomodating vegetarians like ourselves. Not much is spilled, since you just order a hot item from the menu if you wish, along the fresh yoghurt with fruit and juice you get. At our request she arranged a quick laundry service. There are also free bikes for use, which is very convenient to get into town. The room was nice and spacious, and the pool is nice with sufficient sunbeds as well. What's really nice and makes you feel very peaceful are the rabbits in the garden. We would certainly recommend this place if you're looking for a good value for money place in Stellenbosch.

It's all in the details, We are very impressed with everything about this hidden gem. Summerwood Guest House offers 4 star accommodation set in a beautiful location, not too far from the shops and restaurants. Fiona, the host was friendly, inviting and went the extra mile catering to our vegetarian and halaal needs. We were upgraded to the King Mountain View Room, which offers stunning views all around. The Guest house is so clean, fresh and vibrant. We received little chocolate gifts hanging on the doors. We will definitely go back again. We loved every minute spent there. Thank you.

Our week settling our daughter into first year university was made so easy and comfortable staying in this exquisite guesthouse. 1km from Academia and university residences and about the same distance into the heart of Stellies this is the perfect location. Fiona and Paulette made us feel so welcome; the rooms are beautifully appointed, large, overlooking the peaceful garden and gorgeous pool area. And the breakfasts are super healthy and totally delicious. Loads of offstreet parking and minutes walk/run/cycle to the Jonkershoek nature trail. If you want a personalized stay with soul when visiting for work or to see your kids this is the place!

Very nice, historic mansion with just 8 rooms, in a neighborhood with many villas and gardens. Lovely, helpful patrons, and service. I originally booked for 2 nights in Dec 2019 but extended to 4 nights because the place felt so good. It is also a good starting point for exploring the wine lands, either by car, tour bus or even by bike. The place is recommended for people enjoying tranquil, historic villas with all amenities of a modern guest house.

My husband and I experienced our very own magical fairytale. There were real live bunnies roaming the garden. Fiona really went above and beyond with exceptional service and the attention to detail made us feel extra special. The breakfast was even phenomenal. They can definately teach some restraunts a thing or two about presentation and flavor. Absoulety a guesthouse for the books!

Summerwood Guest House is an oasis in Stellenbosch. Recommended to us by friends who stayed there several times. It exceeded our expectations. We had booked 4 nights, but we ended up booking a total of 7 nights.
The guest house is located in a leafy, quiet residential street, close to the university and within walking distance from the many restaurants and cafés of Stellenbosch.
Our room was spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean, with Nespresso machine and electric kettle for tea. A delicious a la carte breakfast. In short all the mod cons you get at a high end hotel but with an informal vibe.
We found Summerwood Guest House was a perfect base for touring the wineries in the area and in Franschhoek and Paarl … Bring home a couple of bottles of wine to try, put them in the fridge in the room - wine glasses are also provided.
We will definitely return.
