The Oude Werf Hotel comes highly recommended for its spotless cleanliness and stylish atmosphere, with many guests commending the spacious and well-appointed rooms. Its central location in Stellenbosch is a major draw, making it an ideal base for exploring, although there are occasional remarks about noise. While the hotel's service is generally applauded for being attentive and accommodating, including valet parking, there have been some concerns over room size and a few unexpected charges. Nevertheless, the overall consensus among travelers is one of satisfaction, particularly with the added perks like the enjoyable breakfast.

After living in Stellenbosch for many years we came back for a concert and stayed over at this hotel as we had lots of fond dining memories of this place.
The staff is friendly but lack finesse that suits a hotel of this standard. I asked for a taxi to drop us at the Endler and was told to book uber on my phone as its cheaper!
The hotel is popular with senior citizens due to the location and history yet its not geared for older people. The chairs in the lounge is super low and once a older person manage to get down the up is a major problem. The chairs might look nice but not practical. The tv in the lounge just do not fit this hotel..a few guests parked in lounge watched rugby on top volume with lots of screaming. We wanted to sit down for coffee but could not find a quite spot and outside it was raining so we gave coffee a miss.I asked at reception if the tv could not be turned down..the receptionist rolled her eyes and pulled op her shoulders.
When we sat down for dinner we got smoked out by the fire. The door was opened to get rid of the smoke and a huge draft came in as it was cold and raining. The waitress closed the door who was told by the aggravated firemen to open the door again. At the end we moved to a table away from the draft and fire. The food was eatable yet not great and at least not overpriced.
The rooms are huge and that is what you pay for.Ground floor rooms a disaster as you have no privacy. Mattresses very soft and feather pillows..But you can get non feather pillows which was a plus.
The aircon filters needs replacing as it blows out dusty air. I have a sensitive nose and chest and battled to sleep.
Stellenbosch is a magical town and I will always come back.. but in November will rather try a guesthouse close to town.
This hotel lacks a good manager which is no where to be seen.
The cut above feel is gone!

We had an excellent if not too short stay at Oude Werf.

Our room was lovely overlooking the pool and the hotel was in a great location right in the centre of Stellenbosch near some great wine bars and restaurants.

Be sure to check our Stellenbosch wine bar, the fat butcher and de eetkamer whilst you are there.

The staff were all super friendly and made it feel like you had known them for years

This is a very nice hotel although it is in a very busy street. We arrived and there was nowhere to park in the street - it was valet parking but it felt very rushed to get things out of the car so they could take it away.

The reception area is very nice with large pictures on the wall the bar area is nice too. The staff in the reception were very friendly and helpful.

The pool was nice but it goes into shade completely in the late afternoon. I swum both days in the shaded pool and although it was cold it was refreshing. It was easy to get in with steps and a rail. Towels were available from reception.

Our room was huge and the bed was very comfortable. The pillows were lovely. The view was just of the street at the front. The bathroom was nice with a reasonable amount of space. There was complementary water in the room.

There was a fairly big restaurant for breakfast. Service was very slow and not very friendly. There where lots of basic items missing from the table - butter, salt and pepper, some cutlery etc and we had to ask for all of these things. The eggs were really hard on the first morning and not cooked in the way I had asked.

Apart from the breakfast service I would recommend this hotel.

My husband and I spent a wonderful few weeks on holiday in South Africa and stayed in several exceptional establishments. Oude Werf was the most expensive and yet the most disappointing. We stayed for two nights including Valentines and we were looking forward to staying in luxury and being pampered.
From the moment we arrived things did not go well, we booked a deluxe room on Booking.com at a cost of nearly 7,500 rand for 2 nights B@B, we were happy to pay this for a deluxe experience. Unfortunately the rooms on their own website have different titles to those on Booking.com which when you are comparing both to get the best price causes some confusion as we would not have booked a room without a balcony in the height of summer, we had been allocated an old fashioned room without a balcony. The receptionist immediately informed us that for 500 rand we could upgrade to a room with a balcony, which of course we did.On reflection this appeared to be a well versed strategy and for the sake of 500 rand it left us feeling taken advantage of.
The room we were given was large with a good bed and air conditioning and a large decked area. Unfortunately the decked area was old and scruffy, there were neglected old plants in pots with peeling paint and thrown in one corner was a broken sunbed covered in bird droppings. Not at all to the standard we expected.
On arrival there are chocolates on your pillow but these were not replaced on the second day, are towels were also not changed. The television has a very poor reception and there is no Netflix.
Breakfast was pleasant enough, although I had to return my pot of tea as it was cold, the waitress was absolutely lovely.
As for dinner on Valentines evening it was a complete disaster. We booked at reception when we checked in but on arrival in the restaurant they appeared to have no record of our booking. The manger told us to 'grab an empty table ' were we in a fast food joint!!! Unfortunately the manger, waitress and guest relations manger didn't appear to have a clue about running a restaurant. We waited an hour for our first drink, we were served bread with no plates cutlery or napkins, our starter which was not as described on the menu arrived 1hr 30mins after our arrival with the main course!! The manger didn't come near us, however the chef did speak to us and his own words was glad our main courses weren't 'sh*t'. High standards! The chef took a few things off our bill, but to be honest it was to little too late and a waste of 3 hours of our lives.
On check out the next day the manager took the meal off our bill, but shocked us when she asked us if we enjoyed breakfast and slept well, when we said we did, she exclaimed 'well two boxes ticked' . Need I say more, if this establishment is happy to have ticked 2 boxes it is a sad reflection on their standards. We expected for the price to have ALL boxes ticked. There are some fabulous places to stay in South Africa at half the price so do yourself a favour and avoid this Fawlty Towers.

A lovely hotel in the downtown of Stellenbosch within walking distance of shops, restaurants, museums and galleries, Oude Werf is a comfortable and welcoming refuge after traveling. The hotel staff is warm, helpful and responsive. The rooms are light, comfortable and airy. The hotel, which also offers laundry service for dusty travelers who have spent weeks on the road, also serves a generous and tasty breakfast that comes with the cost of the room. If we ever return to Stellenbosch, one of the major wine areas of South Africa, it's the only place I would stay.

Visited for the last 3 nights of our South African holiday

Location 5* Right in the centre of the Town, perfect for just strolling around Town

Room 3* would have been 5 * as it was well equipped and spacious but the air conditioning packed up on the last day which made the room swelteringly hot. They provided a fan but it was noisy so not a great last night!

Breakfast 5* - One of the best in the range of cooked food available

Hotel Facilities 4* nice shaded areas to sit but the pool was cloudy and not inviting.

Reception 5 * tried there best re A/c

Ground floor room opening out onto the pool area . Very quiet in the room. Super comfortable bed/s. Internal bathroom so no actual "window" to be able to open for fresh air in bathroom and loo area -the extractor fan system was not functioning.
Food in the restaurant is of good standard - staff excellent - lots of areas in the hotel to sit and relax. A few more extra poolside chairs are needed. Available basement parking.

Outstanding service and luxury at this very special historic hotel. Room 116 was perfectly located with a patio, just a few steps from the pool.
The pool area is lovely with a almost private feel and kept immaculately clean. Drinks and lunch by the pool is recommended.
The bed was a large king and super comfy with good room air conditioning control. Shower good but a bit weak on pressure and only a fixed ceiling head.
We ate breakfast on our last morning and paid separately which was very reasonable.
The area around the hotel and the central area feels very safe and is fine to walk around day and evening.
Most of all, the staff were magnificent with real and genuine customer service. We were made to feel like royalty from the moment Prudence checked us in with a warm welcome.
Derrick on front of house is also a true professional and chatted with us and helped us with our every need, including package wrapping and free valet parking under the hotel.
We will certainly be returning next year for a longer stay.

Hi there, thanks so much for your question. You can either use shuttle service or car rental. We are about 20 mins drive from the airport, and Cape Town is 15-20 minutes in the other direction. Our hotel to Cape Town is about 40 mins drive.

European sockets (French, two pin) in the room which was useful. If I'd have known I wouldn't have bought extra SA ones at the airport.
