Spier is one of those hotels that makes you feel like home, the main swimming pool area is absolutely amazing with sparkling clean water and worth the walk from your room to experience other than the pools in the village. Rooms are spotless and oversized compared to most hotel rooms. Bathrooms are clean but not entirely modern. This hotel is value for money with all the small little luxury ammenties such as bathrobes, turndowns and slippers not available at other properties which are more or less the same price point.
If you are noise sensitive to traffic request a room away from reception and further into the village as they call it.
The breakfast bar has a basic but good selection but quite possibly the best croissants at any winelands hotel. The hot selection is good and varied.
The staff are more present and attentive during the day shift but i think this is the case in most hotels, but no matter the time of day the front office staff were always happy to assist, even at 2am when we needed an additional urgent room, they made a quick plan.
This will always be our home base in future when working in the winelands.

The out of town location has the advantage of greater security and quiet surroundings. Staff are exceptionally friendly, rooms are large and well equipped and the dining room serves excellent food. Parking is quite far from the rooms, but when they remember to charge the golf cart batteries that is not an issue. The gas fireplace in the room works well and looks natural.

We had a fabulous stay at Spier. We were travelling as a family with two young children and grandparents and it was a great base for exploring Stellenbosch. Rooms were very comfy and clean. Great facilities (lovely pool) and lots to explore on the site. Kids club is a bonus. Great breakfast and recommend the picnics. Staff super friendly and helpful. And of course the wine is excellent...!
Recommend booking ahead if you want to eat at Vadas Smokehouse, as we found it wasn't possible to eat dinner there without a reservation. Also take a portable high chair for babies / young kids as the high chairs available aren't suitable for under 2 years.

It's good to read that you enjoyed the spacious rooms, facilities, lovely kids activity centre, pool and the wine. Chosen due to size of facilities and their covid precautions. A great option for those needing to be extra cautious. In room service options with a eating area in room and private terrace was perfect. No one happened to be staying around us so it was extra safe. That also met the courtyard pool was empty and seemingly like our private pool. The pool was not as large as the main hotel pool but that made it perfect for us to sun bathe next too. The pool lounge cushions were the most comfortable I have tried and were covered in clean terry cloth each morning with fresh pool towels!!! The courtyard pools are seemingly for those within your block of rooms which may only be 8 rooms by the looks of it.
The lobby (Wiseman…), restaurant (Simphiwe, Gloria, Joyce…), spa (Lyna) staff were ALL very covid cautious, helpful and kind. They took great care of us and even arranged for hotel dr to meet us wherever we chose for covid test for our next flight. They printed results for us and were able to bill the room. The cost seemed even cheaper than other options.
Easy walk to farm cafe (fresh bread, meats cheeses!) , wine tasting, river walk, and Segway tours
Overall this was a great surprise; a large hotel to hide away in but with the attentive care you would get at a smaller guesthouse.

We stayed as a family of 3 for 1 night as part of our road trip holiday in South Africa.
Service from reception on arrival was very good, despite them clearly being very busy with arriving and departing guests. We were given a glass of wine and sat in the lounge where we were talked through the map of the hotel and grounds and what we could do during our stay. We were then taken by golf buggy to our room.
We had a garden room which was beautifully furnished with doors out to a patio and small pool at the rear that we shared with a few other rooms. We had a large (super king?) size bed and our daughter slept on a large sofa bed at the foot of our bed.
There was a complimentary bottle of wine, glass bottles of water, tea and coffee facilities and a fridge in the room.
There was a connecting door between us and the room next door and it wasn't very sound proof. We could hear the other guests conversation very clearly and got an early wake up call from one of their small children.
The bathroom was large with double sinks, walk in shower and bath.
The hotel grounds are lovely with lots of art installations to take in as you walk around.
We booked a wine tasting on the hotel web site in advance, but we received a voucher for this as we were staying, so it didn't cost us anything, other than we paid for my daughter to do the kids wine tasting and we had a cheese board with our tasting.
The wine tasting was very good. Despite his very young appearance our wine server was very knowledgeable about the wine he served us. We purchase 4 bottles to take with us on our journey.
I'd struggled to book a table at the restaurant prior to arriving, as the web site said they were full, but it didn't seem very busy in the restaurant so I don't think it would have been a problem? We ate a the Vadas Smokehouse, which was good and made a change from some of the more 'fine dining' meals we ate on our 2 week trip.
Breakfast had a good selection of hot and cold items on offer as well as freshly cooked eggs, although there was a long queue for this. It was very busy and difficult to flag down a server to get a cup of coffee. I'd finished breakfast by the time I had my coffee.
We were able to stock up on snacks and drinks from the cafe/shop before we left for our 5 hour+ drive to our next destination, which was convenient.
Overall a good stay in a beautiful, family friendly setting. 1 night wasn't really enough, I felt like we could have done with and extra night to give us time to visit the birds of prey or do a Segway trip. We would return if in the area again.

My husband and I took our mothers here as a surprise trip, but even after seeing it online we were amazed by how beautiful it is.

Spier is close to Cape Town but far enough away to feel like you’re in the country too. It’s not a difficult drive either.

Service at Spier is exceptional (and I’m particularly demanding when it comes to service) and we were looked after from the second we got out of our car until we left two days later.

The welcome is brilliant; we were given drinks and a thorough explanation of the resort and where everything could be found. We were then taken to our room on a golf cart.

Our rooms were adjoining, which was helpful, and set up as requested. They were huge, with plenty of bed and shower space. There is also air con and a fan, so we were able to keep cool at night.

The breakfast was great, with a continental buffet as well as hot options. My omelette was delicious and there were coffee top-ups on demand.

On the first day we tried the farm café. It was closing around 3pm, which isn’t great for those just checking in, but we managed to get food and plenty of wine with great service.

We tried the smokehouse, which was an interesting braai-meets-tapas concept, which we also loved. On the second night we used the main restaurant, and again both the food and service were great.

We ordered picnics for lunch for the second day, but we realised that a double basket was enough to feed four of us. Luckily the picnic staff bagged everything up for us to take home, so nothing was wasted.

We also did the wine tasting, which was fun, although the employee explaining the one wasn’t the most energetic! Not bad for free though with our voucher.

I also had the signature spa treatment, which was phenomenal, and worth every penny. It was probably the best massage that I’ve ever had!

Overall we thought that Spier was fantastic, and we would definitely go back!

From the minute you arrive at Spier, there were just such helpful attentive people. Friendly, helpful thoughtful. Nothing escapes their eye. Everything was just perfect.! We celebrated our 30th anniversary there, and I cannot wait to have my 35th there. The only thing that I would suggest, in the room, is to put the milk sachets in the fridge. Every little detail, from the friendly, speedy, helpful porters, reception staff, welcoming drinks the hotel room, the rose petals on the bed, to the excellent breakfast staff, was just perfect. The toiletries was absolutely the best., and a few places can learn from Spier. There was even a bottle of Sanitizer in the room. Thank you! Absolutely highly recommended!

This hotel is the perfect stop on the Wine Route, we had been drinking their wines in Cape Town and found they were the bets value wines to drink. They’re 21 range is a step up and is excellent but the signature wines are good to and at around £5 per bottle is difficult to beat. Reartaurant very good to.

We stayed 2 nights at Spier hotel, and had booked the adventure package. We had an absolutely magical stay at this hotel and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to stay in Stellenbosch.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful all along our stay. Even when we managed to lock ourselves out of our room, everyone was trying to help and solve the situation as quickly as possible.
Our room was very spacious, clean, comfortable and quiet. We slept really well thanks to the very nice bed.
The hotel grounds are absolutely gorgeous, extremely green and well kept. There is a pool area which looked really nice, but we had so many activities to enjoy we didn't really have time to make the most of it.
Food and drinks were absolutely amazing, wether at breakfast, at the picnic basket area, or at the wine tasting.
As part of our package we took the Segway tour and had a great time. Our guide was so friendly and knowledgeable about the farm and the vineyards.
Free parking is obviously available when you enter the estate.
Thanks again to everyone for a marvellous stay, our only regret is not staying longer!

On the positive side: the art throughout is stunning, the gardens are beautiful, Spier seems socially and environmentally conscious (other than the single use coffee pods!), the wine is nice, and Kimberly the manager was a great, lovely professional.

On the negative side: it’s overrun with kids! Loud children everywhere, bouncing balls in the dining room, climbing on seats, disturbing the peace – even in the wine tasting room. If you’re a family, you’ll probably like it. But they sold us a “romance package” and the entire experience was far from romantic – do not book Spier as a couple looking for down time. Our other main complaint is the false advertising on the website: the Signature Riverside Terrace Rooms have zero view of the river or mountains, despite the higher price. And from only a small part of the patio does the wine tasting room have a mountain view, despite the website saying “spectacular mountain views” – just tone down the language, Spier. Otherwise, we had a couple of housekeeping issues, the food was average, and in the ground floor room we could hear every footstep above us. If Spier can address some of these challenges, it would be a decent 4/5 star destination for families.

In short: a more intimate accommodation like Boschendal was far better.

Hi, it would be best to check with the hotel to be 100% sure. But the atmosphere at the wine tasting venue was very laid back and relaxing. I doubt if it would be an issue. They even have a juice tasting for older children. Our room was also a decent size and there would be room for a cot. I saw other couples there with small children, so I don't think it would be a problem. Just be aware that there is a swimming pool at the hotel restaurant that is open and not covered. And a dam near the wine tasting area.

Not needed to pre-book. The package for wine tasting for hotel guests is slightly different than for others coming from outside.
