This was my first visit to Ons Genot. What a delightful place in such a tranquil place. We took over most of the guesthouse for the weekend. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners, Marleen and Eric.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable with classy rustic decor. There is a peaceful courtyard where one can relax.

For people who love the animals in South Africa, there is lots of bird life around. I even saw a mongoose and spotted genet. What a blessing to have them walking past. This is what Africa is about.

I WILL be back

We planned to stay one night but extended about other two. Rooms were cozy and clean with delicious wine supply every day :). The Ons Genot is located right next to vineyard surrounded by beautiful garden and a little lake. The owner of OG, Mrs. Marleen and Mr. Eric were very friendly and helpful. They gave us many tips and organized a spectacular wine tour. We learn from them a lot about South Africa its people and life there.
Definitely worth to come back!

.....doesn't deserve its ranking purely because its giving people a false impression of the standard of accommodation in Stellenbosch.
Stayed at this place in Jan 13 and quite honestly it was like the land that time forgot! The reception area is built from Kitchen Units - a terrible impression when one arrives and it doesn't get much better from there. The rooms were clearly furnished back in the early 90's and haven't seen any investment since. The curtains and bedding completely bleached out by the sun, the room a mish mash of styles, who knows what look they were trying to create here?? There is a stool clearly intended to fit under the make-shift dressing table which is taken up by the TV that you can't even get a picture on - satelite TV, you might have if only it would work. Anyway the offending stool comes into its own when you try to go to the toilet during the night and due to the fact that it needs to sit in the middle of the floor you are in danger of seriously injuring yourself on it! Things are glued and stuck together here, taps are broken and drip and there are ant infestations in the rooms and wasps nest everywhere. If you would like to charge anything such as your camera, ipad, ipod, smartphone as us travellers do, then you must negotiate crawling under that dressing table and when you locate the plug socket you aint gonna get your travel adapter plus plug in the space provided. And if you should want to upload or download anything prepare for the wrath of the management as they 'don't see why travellers need to upload photographs'.
The chore of breakfast, (and it clearly is a chore for all concerned) has been abdicated by the owners to the onsite restaurant -Radish which seems to be run by a bunch of surfers who seem to be inconvenienced by morning. They are unkempt and hungover at breakfast with bed head hair and sloppy sweats. They will ask you what you want for breakfast but wont give you any indication of what they would like to offer you by providing a menu - oh no that would be easy. The warm continental options are crawling with flies and the cooked option is swimming in grease!
The only positive I can say about this property is that it was clean. However, the place is being kept clean by the paid staff and I really hope they are paid well, cause its clear that they are the only ones doing the work around here! Marlene is a regular on the reception in sweating gym gear and Eric lurks in the shadows - his role not really apparent.
If you have never been to stellenbosch and the surrounding areas then you will not know that the standard here for accommodation and eating establishments is very high. For equivalent prices paid for this accomodation you can get a beautiful stay with exceptional standards. Unfortunatley the people here seem to have given up on themselves and their property, and I would recommend that you shop around and get value for your money and not be taken in by the ranking of this property as we were.

Dear Jinty125 (or must I say Heathrowdweller according to your previous review), You must be the king of the kingdom of the Blinds. You mention things that only you see and experience. Are all are other guests retarded? Why all these lies, defamative accusations and offencive insinuations? It's still a mystery for us why you are doing this. What have we done wrong to you? Your review(s) do not help tourists, it's rather the opposite, you are falsely misleading them and you are doing exactly the same with the Hussards Grill restaurant in Stellenbosch. In addition, you are damaging other people's bona fida family businesses who have worked hard to built something up. Does this satisfy you? Does this give you a cick? Is this the aim of Tripadvisor?

Uncomfortable pillows and noisy staff.
For a 4 star establishment there's an awful lot of creaking and squeaking going on of door handles and floor boards.
Not impressed with the lack of aircon and shower head..
Very pricey and not so nicey.

Presented and priced as a 4 Star BnB one has certain expectations. Ons Genot is 3 Star at best. However rooms are spacious (No 2) and comfortable. Breakfast, an important part of a BnB offering, is very disappointing. Very little choice, powder coffee and "juice" (which was nothing more than flavoured sugar water), service staff uncaring and disinterested. We opted to eat breakfast elsewhere. If, like us, you enjoy a hearty breakfast whilst traveling then this is not the place to stay.

What a lovely guest house... but we were truly disappointed with the breakfast offering and service. The staff at the restaurant were very unprofessional and uninformed... a recipe for disaster. After waiting for 15 minutes for a glass of water, we opted to have breakfast elsewhere. But yet again... apart from the breakfast, we had a lovely stay.

Marlene works very hard, I have no idea what her husband does but he does not interact with guests.
Place is very tired and needs an update the place is very dated. You can get a lot more for your money in the locality. Swimming pool has permanent tubing/cleaning apparatus in it !! The tennis court is full of weeds ! Our patio had a wasps nest on it and it wasn't the only one. The bathroom had an ants nest. Breakfast is provided by different people who really have idea what they are doing, you have no idea what is available when it comes to a cooked one. The tables were slow to be cleaned and often not set, they have no concept of customer service.
The Ons Genot needs to look at what others offer, tea, coffee etc should be in the room not in a communal area !!! The TV is from the ark age and is not easy to navigate aound, does it really need 2 controls ?
Bottom line stay only if you must you can get a lot more for your money elsewhere. If you don't have a car your in the middle of nowhere.

Response from lenenbeen, Owner at Ons Genot Country Lodge
Responded 24 Jan 2013
Dear Heathrowdweller, Sorry to hear about you disappointing stay at Ons Genot. It’s a pity that you did not come to our reception and complained directly with me. We could have discussed and resolved your issues in such way that you also could have enjoyed, like most other guests, your stay with us. We could have arranged other accommodation if necessary or in the worst case refunded you the cost for your accommodation with us. We hate it that our guests are unhappy at Ons Genot, so we will everything in our power to make our guests as happy as possible. Regarding your complaints I can inform you the following: Indeed my husband does not interact with guests, it’s not his task. My husband has other tasks, responsibilities and obligations in the business. Our swimming pool is equipped with a “Kreepy Krauly”. It’s a cleaner/sweeper invented by a South African, and used all over the world to keep outside swimming pools clean. We also have to keep our swimming pool clean, sorry if this disturbed you. The tennis court has a concrete surface and there are no weeds. There might be some leaves on the court from the shrubs and trees around, but it’s swept once a week. Our gardener would have done with pleasure an extra sweep on request. We are base in a fruit/grapes farming area, so during certain periods of the year bees might start making a nest, but again a quick word would have removed this. Same with ants, they can smell sweets of sugar based products from “miles” so we do all we can to avoid sweet things in the room. Tea and coffee facility are standard not in the room but in a communal area, reason for this is mentioned in the previous paragraph. We provide however T&C trays for those guests who still prefer to have this in the room. Again, a quick word... Our TV’s are old fashion, I agree, but they still do their job 100%. Since we offer satellite channels, we require an additional remote to manage this decoder. And yes, we are located outside town in a tranquil location, so a car or taxi is almost essential. Regarding your other remarks like “Place is very tired and needs an update the place is very dated”, “You can get a lot more for your money in the locality” and “you have no idea what is available when it comes to a cooked one”, I cannot comment as these slogans say nothing concrete and are the contrary of the reality and what all our guests experience at Ons Genot. So once again we are sorry that you have chooses the “wrong” accommodation and that it was not up to the standard that you expected. Yours sincerely Marleen

Ons Genot has a saying: "Where guests become friends". Well, I guess we did not qualify as guests. The front door was jammed (Marleen the owner) blamed South African craftmanship and the swelling of the wood (due to the rain), but had no interest in either fixing it or helping the "guests" open it. After a while, we stopped trying to be careful with opening the door. If it weren't so irritating, it would have been funny, in a Fawlty Towers sort of way.
When all was said and done, I had the disitnct impression that we were disturbing her by being there and to the end of our stay I doubt she even knew our names (I even had to ask her name). When I came to the door I was greeted with "Yes?" And thus set the tenur of our stay.
The room was lovely, though even that came with a negative hue. The room which we had booked was out of service due to plumbing problems. We were being upgraded at "no extra charge"; Marleen made a point of telling us twice .
The restaurant was about 250 metres away from the guest house, which we either drove or walked. It was raining most of the time, but we were provided umbrellas with a "friendly" reminder to bring it back. Food and service at the restaurant was very good. In fact, the owner not withstanding, the service was always friendly and professional (something which I can say about all the service industry people I met in Cape Town).
I short: Never again.
WiFi cost R2.50 but they did provide a laptop with internet and a scanner in the main room free of charge. There was also a lovely fire in the entry room with free sherry, port and whiskey.

Response from lenenbeen, Owner at Ons Genot Country Lodge
Responded 10 Jul 2011
My most sincere apologies if this was your experience at Ons Genot Country Lodge. It is of the utmost importance to us when guests leave Ons Genot unsatisfied, and therefore I will attempt to address the issues you have raised above. At the time of your visit, as you have mentioned, it was indeed raining, which lead to the door swelling due to the water and subsequently lead to difficulty with opening of the door. This was ofcourse a wholly unforseen circumstance, and we fixed the door as soon as we could. I usually mention to guests when I give them a room with a value above that which they paid for, most guests do not find this annoying; in fact most are pleasantly surprised. The fact that I mentioned it twice, is probably just a lapse of memory, one tends to forget what was mentioned to which guests when it is busy. The friendly request for return of the umbrellas was simply that; many guest have in the past forgotten our umbrellas at other places and we simply remind our guests to please return them. As to the impersonal nature of my greetings, we have learned out of experience that many guests are infact not comfortable with being addressed on a first name basis. As a result of this, we elect to keep communication professional, unless guests insist on being addressed on their first names. My apologies if you experienced my discourse as impolite or impersonal. Once again, we apologise for the unfortunate collection of circumstances. I can assure that we at Ons Genot strive to make our guests' stay as enjoyable as possible; our 48 glowing reviews certainly attest to this vision. Kind regards, Marleen
