My stay here was average. the beds were okay and showers were clean but small. the people were nice but I have to stay it's quite strange that there was often no one at the reception desk... so if you had a question, you would ding the bell and have to wait for a bit or just ask any other guest.

Did not enjoy my stay at Banghoek too much: very very quiet, location a bit too far from Stellenbosch center (15-20 minutes walk), and very basic (hufter proof) rooms. While I can see it advantages (good value and quiet), I wouldn't stay again.

I was very impressed with this hostel. I have stayed at one of the other Backpackers in Stellenbosch and this one wins hands down.

The rooms are perhaps best described as urban in decor and whilst this could have run the risk of making you feel like you are in communist Russia it actually works very well.

The common areas, including the pool, are very nice.

The location of the hostel is great, only a short walk to town, I felt very safe in Stellenbosch at all times, even walking alone late in the evening.

Finally the two ladies who run the place are lovely and even dropped me at the train station on the day I was due to leave.

seems someone had a good idea / vision and she / he put it together in banghoek place hostel...

however, sadly, it seems this person can't be around to manage his / her hostel... no service, no smiles and sullen attitude was the order of the day...

the room wasn't cleaned in 4 days. toilet paper in the room wasn't replenished. the double doors (of the room) that open to the outside couldn't lock (the staff are in the habit of leaning a tree stump against the double doors on the outside to prevent the doors swinging open! i used a wire coat-hanger to keep them from opening - not the kind of security you want in south africa...)

the common toilet wasn't cleaned once in 4 days, the waste basket in the toilet was overflowing with items that remained on the floor for days. the toilet paper ran out after 2 days...

the floor at the outside sitting area wasn't swept in 4 days... cigarette butts on the floor were there before my arrival and after my departure...

disappointing...

one could say, but it was over the holiday season... but i don't think that's a good excuse when you are in the holiday business...

you could say that, well, maybe the staff are poorly paid and not managed, but the staff seem to be taking the piss completely... they are extremely sullen-faced and do not greet you... three of them took over the couches of the tv lounge and slept there all day... even using establishment towels to cover themselves when it got cooler... i suppose it was the weekend... but....

my advice: don't go there until it is managed and run properly...

i took some nice photos, take a look...

I booked a single room for two nights. Arrival was fine and I settled in. I felt something scuttle around my pillow and noticed a strange bug. I've never seen this kind before, which is strange as I'm South African... I killed it and to my surprise, a lot of blood came out. I realised it was a bed bug and Google image search confirmed :(
Luckily the guy downstairs apologised and gave me a new room (Thankyou L) - however, sleep was feverish at best as I thought every small black spot or little movement was another bug.
The next morning I mentioned to the blonde woman at the front desk that I left my charger in the other room - and asked if I could retrieve it... she looked confused so I said I was moved because of finding a bedbug. She then denied my findings - 'It's IMPOSSIBLE' - so I explained the gory blood, rock smashing story. Then she said - here's the key for the first room (to go get the forgotten charger) 'If it's still there...' - This was said with such nonchalance. There are also signs everywhere about Banghoek taking no responsibility for missing items out of rooms. I find this lax attitude toward safety and privacy very anxiety provoking. The next day, as I was laying in my room (I could've been naked) A staff member unlocked my room and just came in. No knocking, or anything - This is extremely unprofessional!
Furthermore, moving the bed slightly backward I noticed thick layers of black dust on the plugs, the lightshades are also just dust-infested, the sheets were stained and on the pillows strange gooey smears of dirt, which I peeled away. I also inspected the inside of the pillows (after fears of more bugs) to discover 2/4 to be yellowed and stained.
The wifi did not work in either rooms, both on my cell or laptop. Which meant I had to work in the lounge - but there was not adequate desk/table space to work from. I also had no signal to phone in either room.
I wanted to walk to Stellenbosch, but the breakfast was served late - which meant I had to drive instead.
I am so disappointed at what happened, as these 2 days away was planned my only getaway over the holidays, planned as a 'treat' to myself :(
No attempt was made to apologise properly, offer a refund or even a 'free coffee' - which they charge and is NOT included in the breakfast.

Nice and cozy little place in Stellenbosch, fully equipped kitchen and very nice with the free breakfast included.

We were though a little bit unlucky I think, as we arrived on a sunday where the owners wasn’t around, and the noice that the staff created during several hours this day, was almost unbearable…
They were standing in 3 different parts of the house, yelling to each other like there was no guests around at all (eventhough we were probably 8-10 people trying to relax, cook or enjoy the swimming pool area)

The owner should have a chat with them about this, because after 7 months in Africa, we’ve seen a little bit of everything, but this still took the gold medal of the most annoying and careless staff we have met. At the same time a girl claimed that she lost 200-300 usd from her private room - on the same day where the owner was not there. If this is true, you should be very careful with your belongings (but you should no matter where you go)!

Banghoek Place is a professionally run establishment with great staff who are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious and clean. This is a quiet place so great if you want to relax in the evenings. Its close to the centre of Stellenbosch and only a short walk into town. They serve a free breakfast in the morning, which is great. And their coffee machine makes excellent coffee. Highly recommended. Neil - owner of Amapondo Backpacker Lodge, Port St Johns, Wild Coast

The service from the beginning was terrible. I received a 2 liner without a greeting or a name, saying they have no rooms for us.

Then trying to get hold of them to query it, it took hours and hours, only to never get a response from them again.

Very bad.

There were a group of guys coming to experience wine tasting and they rejected it, prejudice.

I'm a administrative assistant who could for the life of me not get a response out of the service representative: Cornelius.

E-mail upon e-mail... No response. Phone call after phone call, absolutely no helpfulness whatsoever.

Had to cancel the booking as they could not even meet minimum standards - i.e. no scanner no fax no power to respond to my queries, and no phone call to explain all this to me, therefore wasting my time and effort, and costing them a booking and any possible future income from my company.

I suggest that if you want to progress to any level, find some pro-active booking agents who can be helpful to clients!

Their website looks beautiful but followed by service like that? I think I dodged a bullet before making this booking for my guest.

I came to Banghoek Place on December 24th with my boyfriend and two friends of ours. Before getting there I told them "don't expect too much, the prices are low" it was really surprising when we got there and saw an amazing place with a clean pool, barbeque, big kitchen, nice rooms and the nicest staff ever. Also is a good place to know new people. One of the guys working there explained to us some things about "Xhosa" culture... We spent our Christmas learning things and sharing awesome food.
