During our previous trip to Oudtshoorn, we visited this delightful outdoor restaurant called De Oude Meul. Situated under willows creating refreshing shade and most delicious meals. We promised ourselves on our next visit we would stay here, as we discovered it is indeed a guest lodge. Fast forward Dec 2020, we got to stay at the gorgeous self catering units of De Oude Meul. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome, and began exploring the huge grounds their property is situated upon. Lush green grass under our bare feet, little tiny 3 day old baby ostriches to marvel at. An Olympic sized rabbit pen, with such loving nibbly rabbits to feed and cuddle. Roaming freely are two beautiful Shetland ponies, and many more adorable farm animals. A river runs through the property, creating peaceful brooke sounds and offering it’s guests the opportunity to take themselves and their children fishing, either at the river, or a very dreamy little lake. We were in love with the romantic garden pagoda’s and could just envision the many weddings that have been hosted there. Their swimming pools are pristinely kept, and they have plenty poolside loungers. We had aircon in our unit, a little bit of WiFi, and lusciously comfy beds / showers etc. We had thee most delectable breakfasts daily, served as part of a B&B service. Our son experienced their chef’s vetkoek (a traditional kind of fried bread) for the first time and was asking for the recipe. The owners and their staff were so attentive, and meticulous care was taken at housekeeping. Considering the kind of year this has been, our family wasn’t sure what to expect, but we felt in very safe hands. Everyone cheerfully went forward as a team creating a wonderful, safe, spaciously social distanced holiday for their guests. The veranda with a lovely view, coupled with a real South African Man’s built in braai (oven lightbulb fitted in braai!!) was the perfect way to end a day after exploring in and around Oudtshoorn. Or, if you don’t feel like making your own dinner - of course you could just go to their in-house fancy restaurant (which also happens to be very kid-friendly, complete with the dream play area!) and of course serves champagne. An unforgettable stay, one that we will always treasure and highly recommend.

On a hot February day we arrived at this oasis. Well-kept gardens, large shady trees, neat lawns and rooms neat as a pin welcomed us. Friendly staff showed us a back door to the unit where we could park and easily carry our luggage into the room without any steps to navigate. Being a wild-life photographer, the Grobbelaars River that runs along the grounds was a highlight. I could search for dragonflies and damselflies and photograph them with my feet in the cool water. The only disappointment was the swimming pool closest to our room. I could not get my 75 years old body safely into it because the first step into it was too deep down and there was no hand rail. I also knew that I would not be able to get out of it on my own. Everything else was very neat and comfortable. I especially liked reading the notes on the history of the farm, as well as stories from the spiritual life and experiences of the owner, Boy Spies. Unfortunately there was not enough time to read it to the end.

A beautiful lodge surrounded by mountains providing a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Very close to most of the attractions in Oudtshoorn. Staff is flowery friendly and willing to assist wherever possible.

If internet connection is a requirement avoid C block as the connection was very bad. The Lodge may want to change the way breakfast is served during this pandemic time, buffet style with guests dishing food using same utensils was a big concern for me. Perhaps guest can order their breakfast and they are served while at their table. Shower had low water pressure in the block C room I was in especially in the morning.

We spent a night at this lovely little B&B as a little well deserved break and we absolutely loved it. We spent the night in the Comfort Room and it was perfect for us who just wanted a relaxing place to sleep. As advertised and the people there are amazing! Extremely friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable about the area. Was a wonderful trip.

From our first contact with Anthony everything about our stay was lovely at De Oude Meul Country Lodge. Not knowing the area to well we were so happy to find that the location of the lodge is perfect for visiting all the attractions on our to do list. Our unit with our own private braai area was exactly what we had in mind for our short stayover. Our daughter had such a great time walking around on the property and discovering all the animals but her best discovery was that they serve her favourite breakfast food - flapjacks. She smiled from ear to ear. Thank you for a lovely stay and great service Anthony! We will definitely recommend you cannot wait for our next visit!

One of the best stays we had in South Africa. True value for money
Beautiful Cape dutch buildings with separate units, we saw 2 swimming very clean pools and well kept beautiful gardens, but did not stay long enough to use it.
Comfortable bed and room, the breakfast was good.
We wanted to experience staying on an ostrich farm within easy access to the Cango Caves and De Oude Meulen had it all.

Family friendly with a little petting zoo. Beautiful setting and venue. However, do not come hungry as the wait for the food out values the quality of what is received. A 90 minute wait for a cheese burger is preposterous. When we asked for bread for our 10 year old son that looked like he was going to faint, we got a manager explaining us that there was a group of people?. With such a limited menu one can expect faster service. The venue can accommodate over a 150 people but serving the 20 people sitting in our area proved problematic. After we complained we did receive our food but the other tables were left staring at the kitchen door. With so many great restaurants in the area I will not repeating my visit to this establishment. The food was not bad, but the quality does not validate the waiting time. The staff and the manager seemed unconcerned by the irritated looks from the 4 tables waiting for service in our area. I hate leaving bad reviews but in such a wonderful touristic town with such great restaurants, this one fell short.

We booked last minute on the 30th Dec at 8pm for one night on the 31st and paid in full. We cancelled the booking at 9am on the 31st . We have been refused any refund even though the chances of them having lost an alternative booking, in the above time period were nil. Lacks any business or customer relations morals.

Before booking do compare the many accommodation options available at this delightful venue. Great for the intrepid hiker. As we were there during Lockdown Level 4, we were not able to make use of the restaurant but our room was kitted out with all requirements for a short S/C stay. We appreciated the advice given the owners before we set out on our hikes.

This was a very beautiful place to stay near Oudtshoorn. The rooms were very comfortable as were the beds. It was well protected from mosquitoes. There is very good breakfast and there is an excellent restaurant on the farm, where it is possible to taste an ostrich steak. There are two swimming pools. You can see ostriches on the farm, but it is very worthwhile to visit the ostrich farm nearby where there are tours with a guide.. Ask the reception and they can give you a discount voucher.

I stayed there this weekend and personally would like to add the following private notes to the owners. Simply pointing out a few points which may improve the overall stay: 1. A lot of people like hiking and marked walking paths with a map is an easy add-on to your premises. The reception pointed me to a gate that I had to go through, but once there, it seemed nearly impossible to move. There were also no signboards indicating the length of the path nor the difficulty level. 2. The organza/ tafata shining bedding option in the tents are personally not nice. It does not feel or look good. 3. The curtain in the bath area was way too small for the area it was too cover. I preferred the windows open, but if you decide to put curtains, then don’t detract from the beautiful room by hanging ridiculously small curtains. 4. There should perhaps be a local drinks menu for the boys to encourage more use of the restaurant. The drink prices were a bit heavy. 5. A camp fire at night is always a welcome addition and we missed this during our stay with the beautiful outdoors. 6. As the nearest shop is not that close, a few essentials available to purchase will also be good. I thought the 4star included shampoo and cond so didn’t pack my own. But only found hand wash in the room. I wouldn’t have mind buying at the reception if it was available. Also the kids love snacking and especially as the water is drinkable, a few sweets and cold drinks would have been nice if it was available to purchase. 7. The above is only really small things, your venue all in all is excellent and a def second stay from us is a must.
