Pulling up at La Plume we were happy to see such lovely surroundings. Having gone through check in we were shown to our suite and could not believe how luxurious it was. Everything about it screamed first rate. The bathroom alone was bigger than some of the bedrooms and ensuites we have stayed in on this trip. The quality of the furniture and fittings was in line with the surroundings.
There is a lovely swimming pool set in beautiful gardens as well as a wellness centre offering all sorts of pampering. We just did not have enough time to use the latter but the swimming pool was brilliant.
We ate in the restaurant in the evening and tried ostrich for the main course, which followed an exceptional choice from the cold table for a starter. Ostrich is not something that was greatly to either of our tastes but at least we now can say that we tried it.
The following morning we were taken on a farm safari of the ostrich farm by the owner of the guest house and farm which added greatly to our understanding of life in Oudsthoorn and this type of farming in general. We were returned to the farm in time for a superb breakfast.
Certainly a stay to be remembered fondly and I would urge anyone travelling to this part of the world to try La Plume.

The location is awesome with wide sweeping views.
The house is furnished in a beautiful Colonial style with tasteful antique furniture.
The bungalow type bedrooms are luxurious with great shower and bath facilities.
Evening meal was superb for choice, quality and service.
Breakfast was again a great meal, the range of hot and cold food was terrific.
We had a wonderful stay, the Staff could not have been more friendly and attentive.
I feel quite embarrassed that some negative comments have been made by my fellow British countrymen.
Ignore the professional “moaners” and read the positives, La Plume is a great experience.

Located in the edge of Oudtshoorn. It's not the kind of place that you will see wild animals nearby, like some of the parks. But, from there we went to Cango Caves, Cango wildlife center. My wife got to pet a cheetah and hold a 7 foot snake. You can ride ostriches and camels at some of the places nearby. Quite a scenic drive getting there from the garden rout. Oudtshoorn is a quiet, very quaint little town.

La Plume is fabulous. The entire facility appears to be a restored, older property. The rooms are huge, with a roomy bath and shower. It is single story and not a lot of rooms, which makes it very quiet. The A/C is really good(that's important to me). The rooms are decorated with terrific antiques. The main dining room is likewise nicely restored and decorated with really nicely done antiques. The bed is huge and very comfortable. The in room WiFi is also good, which seems to be rare for africa. There is a medium to large pool, good for doing a couple of laps. They have a pen full of ostriches which my wife enjoyed feeding.

The food is fabulous. The service is just as good. The owner is the proprietor, which shows. Everything detail is attended to.

If I ever go to Outdshoorn again, I won't even bother shopping for a place. This will be my first choice. If you go, book early. I think it books up pretty fast.

We visited SA for our honeymoon, we started in Cape Town then started the garden route, we were due to stay here for 1 night, we changed our plans and came a night earlier as we wanted to attend the meerkat experience and didnt think we would have had time on the way.

La Plume were quick to allow us the extra night but upgraded us for price of 1 night so we didnt have to move rooms, which was great of them.

Upon arrival (which was 35 degrees) we came into reception and was greeted by a lady who offered us a welcome drinks, which we had. Whilst having a drink she told us what the menu was for dinner and then went on about the farm tour straight away we explained we wouldnt have time, she went off then the lady from the spa came over and welcomed herself (which we thought was a bit full on straight away considering we had just sat down) we were shown our room, which we had the blondene room. When walking there it's very bitty, half on pave, half off, it makes you feel like it's not finished yet.

We were shown our room which was very tidy and spacious.

We went to the pool as it was so hot and it had a big blue tube in it the whole time the pool had grimsby around the edging which made us get out.

Note there is no bar at this place so you need to order from a staff member and sit in the area up from the pool.

Dinner was okay, very overpriced for what it was, this is a set menu that you are told and a buffet style sides.

I just felt it was a very weird atmosphere in the boutique, the staff weren't very welcoming ( only couple of ladies actually smiled and said hello) we reported a bird in our roof on our last night at 8pm we were told someone would come and sort this we assumed he had as it went quiet for a little while when we went to bed we could hear it again and it was noisy until 3am, you cant call them as there are no phones, we were quite far from reception and didnt want to go out at night as we didnt know if anyone one was at reception.

Overall I personally feel this hotel is either a quick stop one night only (which is what we were meant to do) or to skip it completely. The vibe just wasn't there. Clean and tidy but personally feel there is still a lot of work that needs doing there with staffing and the way the boutique is laid out.

This is in the middle of no where with mild security.

Put a slight downer on our honeymoon after having a lovely start in Cape Town.

Response from Karindutoit, Owner at La Plume Boutique Hotel & Spa
Responded 21 Jan 2020
Dear Lwood0, Taking our previous 5 star reviews in consideration we feel the need to share our thoughts. Please take time to go through our response to the issues you had while you stayed here. We upgraded you to a superior suite free of charge as you where staying 2 nights and we wanted to make your stay as comfortable as possible. We apologize that you felt bombarded by all the information given to you on check in but we have found that because most guests leave for sight seeing after check in, we try to give through as much as we can so guest can’t say there was anything they did not know about afterwards. The correct path to your room is the fully paved path at the bottom of the terrace. It leads all the way to your room and up the stairs. The path you are revering to is the one we are trying to rehabilitate the grass off as we are in the middle of a drought. Our region is known for its afternoon wind, bringing some relieve to the hot summer days, this however brings some dust. The dust then settles in the pool and the “blue tube” you are referring to is actually the “creepy crawly” cleaning the pool of the dust. According to national Health & Safety Regulations we are not allowed to serve any glass at the pool area. Therefore, the beautiful garden house where you can sit on leather sofas and enjoy your drinks and sundowners overlooking our magnificent views. Our porter immediately attended to the bird on your roof. On inspection he found the there was no bird in your roof but they where on the gutter on the outside. He scared them away, but it is hard to control nature and by the sound of your review they came back. We will however see how we can try and keep the birds away from the roofs… Security has never been a problem at La Plume. Our property is fenced, the gates are closed after dark, we have a camera covering the complete radius of the farm (and more) and we have a guard on patrol every day reporting to a control room. This all to make sure our guests have a safe stay even though we do not encounter any safety issues. Your comment on us being a “quick stop” is purely personal preference. You will find previous reviews stating that their only problem was that they only had one night with us and wanted at least a 3-night stay! And it is with such a comment that all our hard work done over the past years can so easily be made undone. We appreciate all feedback because on that we can build and ensure a better and more positive tourism industry in South Africa. We wish you all the best for 2020 and we hope that you have a wonderful year with lost of travels to look forward to. Kind regards, Karin

Slightly confused by this place and honestly can’t decide whether in a good way or not. Great location on an ostrich farm and loads to do nearby. Rooms had STUNNING bathrooms but the bedrooms were bizarre with the floor matching the same pavings used outside. The staff in the spa were excellent for customer service, couldn’t do enough however in the main building we were pretty shocked. Having pre- emailed to tell them we were coming late, we were told at 8pm the only food they could offer us was ‘bread and soup’ despite the fact others were eating from a buffet. We had pre messaged to ensure they knew we were GF so bread and soup not suitable. Hungry we were taken to our room (no one helped with bags) and were swiftly left and told ‘see you in the morning can you confirm breakfast time’. No details on WiFi, hotel amenities etc. no offer of a drink?! Hungry and a bit fed up we wondered back to reception and awkwardly loitered wondering if anyone would offer us something, no. So we found someone, asked for the WiFi code and sat in our room at 8.30pm. Given the good reviews we wanted to give the benefit of the doubt but found the service (or lack of) continued and we felt we were irritants. The guy in the car park was warm and friendly though, we loved him!

Dear Frankie W, We have never felt the need to respond to any review but this one has thrown a big spanner in the works and we feel the urgency and need to respond to your claims. You received a complementary upgrade to a superior suite, you where originally booked in a luxury room. We did this because we had the room available and we want to give our guests the best possible experience while they are here. Thank you for acknowledging our stunning bathrooms of which we are very proud. We do not understand that you found the room “bizarre” The total room (bathroom included) is about 100 square meters. Much larger than any standard hotel room. The “paving” you are revering to is handmade/baked clay tiles. Not found easily, or in our region. We have to go through great lengths to get a hold of them, but it brings a standard and warm atmosphere to the guest house not found elsewhere. We had a lengthy meeting with the manger and personnel on duty during your stay to find out exactly why you where only offered bread and soup. As this would have been unacceptable. We found this to be not true. You arrived around 20:30 on which the manager on duty (before taking you to your room) asked if you would like to join us for dinner as our dinner is still open for you to join. (we confirmed this with another waitress that was on duty as well) We make provision for all our guests and your table was already laid. You declined the offer of dinner and on that our manager asked, “are you sure, can’t we even offer you something light like a soup with bread”. We knew you were gluten intolerant and provision has been made for gluten free meals, we also offered gluten free bread to you with your breakfast. The reason we also find this claim about dinner so strange is that we had a Portuguese family of 11 who also arrived late to dinner, they came to dinner 8:20 to be exact. Just before your arrived. They did not want the whole buffet and we gave them something totally of menu and, the same time that you where here. The same gentleman you found so pleasant in the car park helped with your luggage when you checked in…even though you arrived 2 and a half hours after check in. We knew you where arriving late and we arranged overtime for our porter, he stayed to help you. In your room amenities like the coffee & tea families, complementary port est. was shown to you. We do apologize that the WiFi code was not given to you immediately, but this is an free added value and the code is given on request. We strive to make every guests leave with an experience and fond memories and all our staff works really hard all though the year, and it is such a pity that a review like this one, with untrue claims, can make all that hard work undone. We please urge you that if you are ever unhappy in your future travel, wherever it may be, to take up your queries directly with the property while you are still there and while any issues you might have may be corrected. May you have a wonderful 2020 and all the best for the coming year. Kind regards, Karin

We stayed at La Plume as part of a trip from Cape Town and out along the Garden Route. The property is beautiful and charmingly furnished, it has a lovely atmosphere and the staff were great. The food was excellent.

I particularly recommend the farm tour with the owner Bartel as you learn a lot about Ostrich farming and the hardship of life in the Karoo as it became developed. as well as getting up close with the fascinating birds.

The property has a charming atmosphere and is furnished in a French Provincial style which is lovely and in keeping with the location. Unfortunately some of the facilities need maintenance or refurbishment, plugging a shaver in in our bathroom took out all the power to the room, the shower head fell apart and hit me on the head and the matress on the bed was tired and dipped.

While La Plume itself is a nice place we were, as guests at a wedding at La Plume, not accommodated at La Plume, but "outsourced" to a nearby cottage called L'Origins. There was, all along, a lack of communication from La Plume, through whom our booking was made and to whom we made payment. We lasted one night before a move to a nearby guest house which matched (even exceeded) La Plume in terms of what it offered. So, be careful, stay at La Plume by all means, but (unless you enjoy door handles coming off in your hand, no hot water or working bedside lights, and the challenge of manually opening an closing the car entrance gate) don't accept a placement at L'Origins if La Plume offer you this.

Dear wearypeter, As communicated to you, L'Origine is not part of La Plume Boutique Guest House. We also had no hand in placing you there. The allocations to all rooms and accommodation were made by the wedding party. L'Origine was used as budget self-catering accommodation during the wedding and is not part of the La Plume Property.

Originally we were not to stay here and I am so glad we did. I wish we could have stayed for 3 nights instead of just one.
I did not want to leave. The lobby and main lodge were so warm and inviting and very tastefully decorated. But when I was shown to my room, I asked" this is for me? All of it?"
It was that big and luxurious. Awesome huge bathroom and settee and bed were amazing.
They should have plugs in the bathroom but I am not sure we had any plugs in the bathroom the whole time in South Africa. I LOVE THIS PLACE. And the ostriches were a big treat as well. wish I had time to use the Spa

This family owned and run hotel is a delight. The main reception and public rooms were once the main residence for the family that is now in its fourth generation with two more to come. We were greeted warmly upon arrival as our bags were whisked away to our suite and we sat on the stoep with a refreshing drink. The suites are extremely well appointed and all overlook the stunning Klein Karoo scenery with their own little stoep where you can sit and watch the milky way in the night sky. The family are farmers - mainly ostrich and some cattle - and are largely self sufficient. We took the opportunity of going on the farm tour on the morning of our departure and we would highly recommend it. It is fascinating and informative.

The food is very good, with a wide selection of delicious South African wines. There is also a spa and we took the opportunity of having a mud treatment and massage. The standard of the treatment was extremely high.

We would definitely recommend this as a great place to stay.
