Oakdene is situated in the centre of historic Oudtshoorn. It captures all the character and heritage of a bygone era - the ostrich feather boom. This charming Victorian home was built in 1853 and declared a National Monument in 1988. Oakdene is sheltered under Oak trees in the centre of town, on the main tourist route. Oakdene is within walking distance from well-known restaurants to enjoy local wines and delicious Ostrich steaks. Since July 2017 Oakdene is under new Belgian ownership. After a complete refurbishment Oakdene will present itself in its historical Victorian glory. Oakdene has 6 newly styled en-suite rooms with bath or shower. All rooms are individual, have remote controlled air-conditioning, satellite flat panel TV, WiFi, coffee/tea trays, safe, hairdryer and bath accessories. Electric blankets in winter and other amenities will make you stay a pleasant one. Newly designed tropical garden with swimming pool, garden furniture, sun loungers and parasols to enjoy our sunny days. Breakfast is served in the "plaaskombuis" or outside on the patio facing the garden. Safe under cover parking on the premises.

Detailed Reviews
The 36One mountain bike event took place over the weekend and there could not be a better place to stay. We unfortunately only found that out during the course of the weekend, but we now know where to go to next year. The building hosting the guesthouse could well be mistaken for a location in the French Alps - homely, clean, well-maintained, and with stylish old world features. The hosts at the guesthouse were impeccable in their friendliness, their availability to fit in with any request of the guests, and to do whatever was necessary to make the guests feel at home. What especially appealed to me was the fact that the rooms had baths, and not only showers. Everybody who comes in after 25 hours of cycling through wind, cold, dust, and relentless climbs of close to 5000 m of vertical elevation, would know what the benefit of a bath is under such circumstances (instead of only a shower). The breakfast served at the guesthouse gets a rating of 15 out of 10: the smell of freshly baked bread at 7 o’clock in the morning when you go to the breakfast table, combined with the smell of all the components of the extremely hearty but delicately planned breakfast (it is not à la carte, and one could order what you wanted), could not be beaten. And the hosts, Sonja and Daniel, were at all times unobtrusively around to assist with whatever one needed. For the mountain bikers, an extra bonus: Daniel himself is a keen mountain biker with a workshop further down in his property where he is able to attend to every need of any mountain biker. A hosepipe was available after the event to wash the bikes down from the gruelling 365 km ride. And the hosts also confirmed their availability to, on request, prepare a dinner for their guests (that would make it unnecessary to go restaurant hunting at night). Kudos to Sonia and Daniel!

It was a beautiful stay from start to finish. The hosts were very welcoming, even though we arrived after dark. Kindly they checked for us if any restaurants were open, and we were able to walk down the road for a really special dinner.
The décor has been sensitively put together with various treasures and historical artifacts to support both the venue being a listed building, as well as include space for the necessary modern day comforts. The street facing room we had was very restful and quiet - a real chance of oversleeping. Breakfast was extensive, with home made bread and scones was a treat. The venue is located perfectly for my husband to reach the cycling routes, together with the scenic and cultural sights for us. We will definitely be staying there again.

Fabulous hospitality and charming hosts, who have clearly immersed themselves in the area and are helpful and knowledgeable. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, with plenty of attention to detail, and the home-cooked breakfast was generous and delicious. Would happily stay longer if we revisited.

My wife and I stayed at this Guest House for six nights, the car parking is at the far rear of the property, entranced via a gravel driveway, through the dining/kitchen area to the rooms. Our room number 3 was small with a seperate room housing the wash basin, loo and small shower.
Although the owner assured us that he meant the Guest House to look and feel "homely and comfortable" it looked neglected, the bathroom door was shoddy, woodwork showing through paintwork in patches. The old fashioned tap heads for the shower were loose and more water dribbled down from the shower-head than spayed out.
Rather strange pallet style storage at the foot of the double bed, which wasn't used.
Several non-working clocks were on shelving with other outdated clutter.
Breakfasts were a laugh, if I were in a light-hearted mood, there were no fruit juices on offer, nor milk or water. One had to request it. Coffee was poured out of a pot, guess what, yes, instant coffee. Scrambled egg was hard, bacon either recooked or blackened from over cooking; virtually inedible. Grilled tomatoes, whilst requested, didn't exist, only a slice or two of freshly cut ones.
There was little conversation from the husband, except complaints about the situation in South Africa, his wife strove to make good his shortcomings.
In short, we will never return to this accommodation again, yet I sincerely hope the Belgian couple brighten themselves up and become more conscious of the needs of their guests.

Response from Daniel Evrard, Owner at Oakdene Guest House
Responded 01 Mar 2020
REALLY Denis REALLY? Do you really give us such a bad review because I didn't get along with your inappropriate humor and comments to my wife and especially the very inappropriate comments to our staff !!! REALLY? You stayed here for six days, if it was really as bad as you suggested it, you could have left after the first day, but you didn't ..... so. Thank you for your stay anyway. Greetings Daniel

Impeccably renovated historic house with very large rooms decorated to a very high standard (most look like they have jumped out of the pages of an interior design magazine). The gardens and pool area are a haven for relaxing in after a long journey and the breakfast area is serenely beautiful. Breakfast itself is incredibly generous, fresh and absolutely delicious with small touches like delicious fresh bread and apple cupcakes baked onsite. All of this would have made Oakdene perfect enough but the cherry on top is the friendly and attentive service of the couple who run the guest house. Both of them were impeccable hosts who made us feel welcome and at ease so we were able to relax after a long road trip. There are 2 restaurants and a friendly pub in short walking distance. This accomodation is fantastic and creates an unforgettable experience. We will be back.

Oakdene is a real guest house in the sense of the word. David and Sonja just LOVE to host people and excelled in order to make our stay nice. Beautiful rooms with wonderful comfortabel beds, a huge vintage bath, home made scones for breakfast... We had a great time at Oakdene and can only highly recommend this location for any traveller.

Their guesthouse is a little oasis off a busy road and therefore within walking distance of a vast choice of restaurants and amenities. Our room was exceedingly clean with tea and coffee making facilities, many other thoughtful touches and a comfortable bed. Breakfast was a banquet of choices including, fruit, juices, home made breads, jams and muffins and eggs any way you like, plus the best coffee of our trip ...and plenty of it.
Before we left Daniel discussed the rest of our trip along the Garden Route and gave us a map with his personal tips on places worth visiting and things to avoid along the way. In short nothing is too much trouble for Sonja and Daniel.

We stayed one night at Oakdene Guest House on our drive to Cape Town. Daniel the host greeted us snd showed us around thé home and garden. The guest rooms are beautifully furnished, bright and airy with en-suite bathrooms.
In the morning, a large breakfast was set up buffet style in the kitchen. It was a cut above the usual faire. We got treated to handmade bread and corn muffins, so light and buttery. We sat at tables on a shaded terrace overlooking thé garden. It was so relaxing wished we could have stayed longer.

Oakdene is located close to the town centre and convenient for all local attractions. The building is old but full of character, with large, comfortable bedrooms and everything the modern day traveller needs.
There is also off street parking and a small swimming pool.
The hosts Sonya and Daniel are exceptionally friendly, with Sonya in particular keen for a chat at any time.
Sonya does all the breakfast cooking and bakes her own bread and makes the jams.
We arrived as strangers and left as friends, I haven’t stayed at many places where I can say that.
A great place, whether you are travelling for business or pleasure.
