Foster’s Manor (Ostrich Feather Palace), build in 1904, is an establishment of South Cape TVET College. Charles Bullock, the great British sandstone architect, was the creator of the building. James Alexander Foster, a local attorney, instructed Bullock to design a double-storey mansion for him. Foster called the mansion ‘Rus in Ubre’, formally known as Foster’s Folly and later renamed Foster’s Manor. The Manor is a National Monument and has recently been restored to its former glory. It has eight en suite guest rooms, is three star graded and offers bed and breakfast as well as conference facilities. Guests will experience a culinary array of flavours mingling on the cold and hot breakfast buffet served in the dining room. Although we do not serve dinner we can make dinner reservations at excellent nearby restaurants. We hope that we will have the pleasure of making your acquaintance real soon. Conference Venue: Offers conference facilities for up to 18 people.

Foster's Manor can either be classified as a truly funky turn-of-the-century discovery or a creepy castle straight out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. I vote for the former, while my wife was firmly in the let's-leave-at dawn camp.
Someone with a bursting wallet lovingly restored this 100 year old mansion, and probably doesn't care that few tourists find their way here. Some very fascinating architecture throughout, and the place feels like a museum. Rooms are shockingly huge--we felt like we should have brought in three or four other beds just to absorb the echoes in the cavernous space. Staff are very gracious and helpful, although it was a bit tense watching the porter lighting the archaic propane room heater.
Making a good or bad recommendation about Foster's is a tough call--if you're ready for period quirkiness, go for it. If you want comfort and no surprises, don't stop here.

A beautiful old manor, well kept and maintained, this place gives you you a wonderful english feel and touch of its own rich history. The rooms are huge, the bathroom has a cute bath-tub and 24x7 hot water supply. We had very filling english breakfast served early morning at 6.30am on our request. Warm hospitality and middle of the town location at a reasonable price.
One really can't ask for anything more for a cozy stay.

Impressive palace with a huge hall, an aristocratic wellcome and the bigest bedroom I have ever had (about 50 m2!!).
The outside of the building is a little old but my room was totaly freshly decorate and the bathroom had a tub on a very beautiful yellow wood floor.
A very strange stay in the middle of "klein karoo", an unique experience!

Staff were extremely helpful and friendly.
The accommodation was spotless and interesting, filled with period pieces in keeping with the incredible building.
The pool was most welcome after a long hot drive.
An all this in central Oudshoorn

We stayed at Fosters Manor for 2 nights again,we are there every year for sport. So pleased to see that it has just been beautifully restored to its former glory. The staff are wonderful and helpful. Always aiming to please. The rooms are huge and you get the feeling of stepping into a bygone era. Breakfast is always good. Fosters manor is a few minutes walk form town, so easy to walk to restaurants in the evening.

Ants in the beds. Don't try to have a shower unless you are a midget as the length of the cord is 2 foot long so you have to sit down for a shower only to find the water alternates between boiling hot & freezing cold ..... no middle ground. We had booked for 3 nights and stayed just one. No airconditioning and in January VERY uncomfortable one ceiling fan in the room, you may open the window but beware of the noice coming up from the street as the local drunks enjoy their party.

Crazy house.
It is government owned, unfortunately they dont get any renovations done which is a shame.
Rooms are huge and it is like living 100 years ago.
And the rate is so incredible low that is really worth the experience.

The rooms were very neat and spacious. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included, and it was truly treat. The staff went through a lot if effort to present something different every day.

The building I would say needs an upgrade, but the ambiance took you back to the previous era. The place had a very relaxing and welcoming feel to it.

We would definitely stay here again.

I always stay there while in Oudtshoorn. A historic building with spacious rooms, you really live like in a museum. Nice small pool outside, good breakfast, shops and restaurants just in 5 minutes walking distance. And all this with very reasonable price.

This is a strange place. It is an amazing stately house with limited rooms and one has the feel you have stepped back in time, and actually that is exactly what you do. Wooden floorboards that echo as you walk, tiny televisions with only 3 or 4 channels and when I was there none of these worked! There is no wi-fi or extra services.

Yes the rooms are huge and comfortable with old furniture, and you have claw-footed bathtubs in the bathroom, but it is almost too large so when cold it can be quite uninviting almost. There is a hostel behind the motel and the girls' music and screams and giggles could be heard late into the night. When I questioned it with them they said they have had major problems with it, but actually the hostel owns the Manor! Then one can hear all the noises of the house throughout the night and anyone walking around can be heard clearly as though they were walking around in your room. The balcony attached to my room was closed to me 'for my own safety and security'.

The area around the Manor on the top of Voortrekker Road is not safe, and is not an area you would walk around at night. So with all the choices of places to stay in Oudtshoorn there is really no reason why one would choose this place unless you just wanted a cheap place to lay your head while passing through or a quick business trip.
