What a great decision it was to visit again! We had been camping in Baviaanskloof in the Eastern Cape & decided to break the trek back home to Cape Town by stopping off at Amber Lagoon for 1 night. Amber Lagoon is located off the R62 on a dirt road about 20km outside Oudtshoorn. I visited Amber Lagoon 8 years ago & I remember being quite fond of the place but this time I was incredibly surprised to see the landscaped garden transformation & the additional camping & accommodation options. The rustic camping sites have shelter & shade netting with quirky braai spots, access to taps, cold water showers (great on hot days) & toilets close by. As a result of providing the birds with fresh water & planting over 300 trees by hand, they have transformed a barren desert location into a thriving birders paradise. The crystal-clear pool was well received after a long drive in the car. There were swallows diving into the water right in front of us, birds everywhere. There is a lookout point at the top of the property to watch the sunset, they even have a boat & some quirky view point seating to enjoy with a sun downer (bring your own alcohol). After the intense Karoo sunset, you can expect a display of stars lighting up the night sky. Apparently in winter the stars are even better! They are pet friendly with prior arrangement, they have a few dogs of their own, but suggest bringing pets in winter when it is not as hot. A lot of love & hard work has gone into bringing this this desert oasis to life & the down to earth hosts Kurt & Susanne are truly inspirational. Kurt’s famous "Amarula liqueur" crepes are a must try! I would highly recommend Amber Lagoon to anyone who prefers something different & likes to stay in hidden gems away from the hustle & bustle of town, or as a perfect last stop before heading to Cape Town.
HELP NEEDED- LIVE ON PREMISES: They were looking for assistance (preferably a husband wife duo) or any nature loving person to live on the property & assist with gardening / housekeeping. It will take a certain type of person, one who does not mind the heat, reliable & one who does not mind being out of the buzz of town. If you know of anyone suitable, please reach out to them directly.

Amber Lagoon is offroad the mainstream and a good place if you look for an alternative for crowded backpackers. We are family with 2 children and the warmhearted hosts offered us a nice hut at the top of the hill with a beautiful view to the sky. We stayed there for 3 nights and enjoyed the company and especially the excellent meals (e.g. crepes, ostrich meal) freshly prepared by Kurt. Susan gave us very nice tips about places to visit and detours to go. They also arranged an unforgettable tour to an ostrich farm of a local farmer. After this experience it wasn't necessary any more to visit a touristic ostrich show farm.
So go to this place if you look for something different and don't go there if you need the hustle and bustle of a town.

We only stayed here for one night unfortunately, would have loved to stay longer. We arrived quite late not having prepared for dinner or anything, but simple yet delicious dinner of crepes and salad was made for us by the lovely owners. The safari tents are comfortable and it is amazing to walk up the hill at night to see the stars and hear the ostriches.

The place is quite a drive from Oudtshoorn though, so be prepared for that and it is a good idea to bring your own food and drinks. You can buy soft drinks there, but need to bring your own alcohol!

We stayed here for 2 nights, and saw beautiful starlights.
We are young and free, and we could see,
our clean and lovely room, we did not even need a broom.
The room was hot, but we didn't care a lot.
And the water was cold, but we all were bold.
The big and mighty pool, was nice and cool,
we had a lot of fun, there was a lot of sun.
Nice pancakes from kurt, filled with ostrich bird.
They gave us a lot of tips, to enjoy the further trips.
So we carried ostrich chicks, what made it a nice adventure mix.
We got spoiled by Kurt and Susanne, "Hau die pancakes in die Pfanne!".
A lot of greetings from the german volunteers, from Amathunzi Game Lodge!!

I'm not one of those outdoorsy people who likes camping, but this place offered a taste of the outdoors in a comfortable way. It was a great way to disconnect from the city life. We stayed in the ostrich room, it was clean yet rustic, with a comfortable bed and mosquito net set up. Susanne the owner was really nice and helpful, she gave us good advice on scenic routes to take to get to our next destination. I would recommend both their dinner and breakfast. For dinner, it was my first time trying ostrich and it was really good! For breakfast they have savoury and sweet crepes. Just a tip, they do not have a bar, so if you would like to have a drink there under the stars, remember to bring your own alcohol, or Susanne can even recommend a shop you can drive out to nearby.

Was pleasantly surprised by this little desert gem. My lady and I went for a night and enjoyed the tranquility of the desert. The 7km dirt road (passing more ostriches than I'd ever imagined) was well worth the drive to this secluded and peaceful resort. It's basic style and warm hosts make it an ideal escape from city life.

We enjoyed a delicious and generously portioned dinner of ostrich, vegetables, salad and potatoes. We also enjoyed the crepe breakfast.

The place is a lot prettier than the photos led me to believe. The pool is lovely, we also bought some wood to have a little campfire and make smores, and it's always special to be under a desert sky filled with stars.

Thanks!

I recently book a stay for 4 adults and three kids at this establishment in the Kudu Stone cottage.
On arrival I realized I made a huge mistake! The bottom room is extremely cramped and the kettle didn't work. The upstairs bedroom isn't even part of the cottage...you need to climb a ladder to get to it and the extra mattress on the floor was paper thin...was not going to let my 5 year old daughter sleep on that in the middle of the winter in the Karoo!!!! There is NO hot water...be warned!!!!! you need to go to the main house which is quite far from the cottage!!!! And the toilet is also situated outside the cottage...upstairs quite a walk...def not child friendly at all! Very much a backpackers!!! Must say it was clean...

We were there with our motor home, so we didn't use the rooms, why I can't rate them. But the rest was so good, that we prolonged our stay from one to a total of three nights.
Kurt's ostrich specialities and vegetable dishes are definitively a highlight. The generous swimming pool and sanitary facilities very clean and tastefully decorated. We enjoyed cooling down there after the hot day's trips around Klein Karoo.
It's a bit remote (20km out of Oudtshoorn), but it's worth the few km more.

I was doing a road trip with a friend and she has stayed here often. We hired one on the tents rather than hassle to put up our own. The weather was starting to turn cold, but we still had 2 swims in the lovely pool.
The owners are very friendly and we opted for the dinner you can request. There is a kitchen you can use for self catering, but the dinner provided was great.
Before leaving in the morning we had a last swim.
I will come back and spend more than a night here in the future.

One of my favorite spots in the Western Cape. Such friendly fun hosts. Delicious Food. Quirky accommodation. Stunning views and start lit skys! The tour with the ostrich farmer next door is worth it to add to the experience of the Farming Karoo!
