Tucked away from the busyness of town life, Outeniqua Mountain Lodge was the perfect place to start a wind-down getaway. Hoopoe Cottage was very comfortable and well equipped. The view, the birdsong, the croaking of the frogs at night all contributed to the magical, peaceful atmosphere. Retreat is the perfect word for this gem. Ingo and Gizelle were most welcoming and informative hosts.

What a lovely cosy cottage we had as a family. We knew that it was going to be cold, but hey, it's winter. The fireplace was a treat to get rid of the chill. Ingo made us feel very welcome and the scenic drive was a great add on.

My wife and I visited to try something different. The night in the teepee was fun. The camp provides everything you could need for a quiet, secluded camp away from it all. The rocket hot water system is interesting, and it works fine for washing dishes, but it makes for an unpredictable shower. On the whole, it's a lovely place, with friendly people.

Stayed for 1 night hoping to do some hiking in the area after the owner had enthusiastically told us about all the great hikes available on his property. Unfortunately the only hike was to the top of a hill a 30 min walk, the other trail supposedly along the river was non existent and overgrown.
No Trout on this farm, how the owner calls his property by this name is beyond me.
This place is situated in such a beautiful setting at the bottom of Prince Alfred Pass but needs a complete overhaul from the accommodation to maintaining the pristine environment around the property.

No trout for more than +8 years. False advertising at its best. The water is untreated and tastez awful. You have to carry yoyr refuse bags to his home 300meters away! Even though at registration he offers to get someone in reality when you enquire why no one serviced the cottage you then get told there is no one and you must bring it to him. The road is shocking on the premises. Especially difficult on the grounds to get to the wooden cottages. The grounds are totally unkept and lacking any maintenance. No microwave no toaster, heaters etc. You told because the power trips (not wired properly). Although the cottage was clean and presentable at first sight, it has not got the expected basic supplies. The sitting room chairs have collapsed and need urgent replacing.

There is NOTHING to do there. Not suitable even for basic hiking/walking. No cellphone or Internet Nothing comms. of any sort including. No TV either, if u want it.

Oh and the other seriously BAD management surprise practice by the owner. Even though we put a 50% deposit 10 months prior. At the last minute the owner sends you a bill with a FULL increase, sighting it is stated in the small writing 'subject to increase without notice' He was not going to negotiate including on the fact that he had already made a profit on interest and benefit of 10 months on the deposit!!! I guess because he knows full well "once bitten, twice shy" guest will never return so will extract as much money from u as possible.... I could carry on and on

If you are looking to really get away from cell phone, computers and noise - this is the place to relax. The self catering cabins are well maintained and adequately furnished.
We had a beautiful view over river and dam where blesbuck and some horses were casually munching away on the grass next to the water. Getting to the lodge, you travel on a gravel mountain pass through indigenous fynbos and spectacular mountain views - a great motorcycle ride, if that's your fancy.
I will definately return again for a longer stay.

This was our 4th return trip to this establishment. the Log Cabins are still well appointed and comfortable. They are designed for those who are fully organised to self cater. We chose the cabin at the end (Kingfisher) on the larger of the three small dams. It has a private setting and views of the Prince Alfreds Pass on the way up towards Knysna are splendid with the Keurbooms river in the picture below. There are three other self catering log cabins situated about 150 meters apart on the hillside. Now with a name like 'Trout Lodge' you would expect to find ... trout! well, there aren't any or if there are they are very well hidden. As an avid Fly fisherman of 25yrs, it was disappointing that a resort where there used to be fish (and even some hatchery escapees in the river) now is devoid of fish. Even the staff told me that they are not sure if fish are there anymore. I didn't get to chat to the owners as they were away at the time of our visit as it would probably have been more enlightening. I also got the feeling that the property was not as well kept as on previous visits but this should not distract from those who would like to find solitude and a lovely Canadian style log cabin in which to relax and explore the Knysna forest area.

It was now our 5th visit at the trout lodge. It's just the most amazing place to get away from all the stress!
It is a beautiful, breathtaking, magnificent... spot - words just can't describe it!
And oh my God the stars out there!!!
The owners are the most amazing and interesting people we've ever met.
We just love being there and we'll always return to get away from the world.

We spent our 10th wedding anniversary at Outeniqua Trout Lodge, what a wonderful place!
Even though it rained a bit, we were well prepared - a little Amarula goes a long way in rainy weather - and lighting the indoor fireplace, we were sorted!

The cabins are well appointed and well thought out. It's a self catering option, and the kitchen area was perfect.

My husband loved the off-grid system they run at the lodge, and found it very interesting talking to the staff at the lodge.

The kids loved the natural rock pool and play area.

We took a lovely scenic ride back home ... a lovely weekend away with beautiful photo's to remember it by.

My son and I were doing a motorcycle tour on and off road and had the lodge pre booked for us. We arrived quite tired and were greeted with a nice cool beer and a home made pizza delivered to our lodge, the pizza and desert were good and plenty of it. The view from the chalet was idyllic and our host gave us plenty of advice for our onward journey in fact his knowledge of the area is excellent.
It is off the track a little way and some care is needed if in a car for the entrance.
I would stop here again and if you are an otdoors type of person youll love it.
