The host was friendly and very helpful. Apartment was clean with the basic provided. Bed was super comfy. Small private patio area which was lovely for my doggie. Area was quiet but very centrally located. Walking distance to shops, mall and waterfront. Enjoyable stay. TV system they have is irritating though as it wouldn't work properly despite TV being changed. Other than that one point, everything else was great.

We were happy with the very convenient located accommodation venue. We however didn't get a warm welcome from the hosts on the day of our arrival. We only got to have a friendly chat with our host on the second night. One first night we had other guests braaing and drinking well into the morning hours. On Saturday night the party continued until 4am so we had a rough time trying to travel back to EL. Owners partied with guests...

I have lived in Knysna for many years but recently moved. I was making a return visit to friends and family and booked at Inyathi. I was hugely disappointed. I found the accommodation sub-standard and was told by the host Helen, that it was Budget accommodation. I do not agree. The cottages and the studio which I booked are looking sad, are run down and are just not of the standard and quality which I know Knysna enjoys across the board. Having owned my own letting agency in Knysna I know the quality the Knysna landlords/ladies put out whether for long or short-term rental and certainly if signed to a booking online company then they must meet standards. The studio was very small and lighting was so bad that in the kitchen I could hardly see to cook. The TV has such bad reception that one could not comfortably watch but could at least listen. There were only 4 local stations available. There was no radio. The crockery and cutlery were at an absolute minimum. Saucepans were just 2: one large with an ill-fitting lid which had no handle so could not be used, and another so small it was really of little or no use. I had to borrow extras for the kitchen from friends. The shower was just "old" and in general the entire unit was tired and in need of TLC. No braai/barbecue tools were available and the braai unit was rusted with hole in it! We did get to look inside a couple of the cottages too and they were so basic and tired we vowed never to return again. Having said all of this I did find the hosts: Helen and Riaan very pleasant - I just did not like the standard of accommodation they were offering.

Response from Notthesameanymore, Owner at Inyathi Guest Lodge

Thanks for posting this review, and allowing us this forum to be able to comment and reply to your views about Inyathi. Whilst we do value your opinion and will review all the items mentioned in your review, we do feel it is necessary to put forward a few facts to somehow explain to others your views. You chose to pay R700 a night over the xmas holidays for a studio self-catered apartment in the centre of town and booked it thorough a third party website which charges us 21% commission of that rate as a fee. This is the cheapest rate for 2 persons in a self-contained apartment you will find on that site for that time of year, and the room is even cheaper when you book direct with Inyathi. Even all the backpacker private double rooms in Knysna are more expensive and you would have been sharing the kitchen, fridge and TV room. we would say that is a big indication of the budget-ness of our accommodation. Also the lowest prices for a self-contained apartment through a letting agent in Knysna over the xmas holidays would easily be double/triple that and more. But we think you already knew that when you picked the cheapest price you could find. we also feel it is pretty unfair of a letting agent to comment on the standard of our accommodation, for you should know the strict level of criteria we have to meet to gain our star grading from the Tourism Grading of South Africa, and just to comment further you were here when the annual assessment was being held and you briefly met the senior assessor himself. FYI we have been comfortably graded 3 stars for our self-catering units every year since we opened and the assessor has stayed in your room many times on his previous visits. In detail – if the room was missing any equipment you needed, you could have easily have told us on any of the 16 days you were staying with us, as you said so yourself, we are so pleasant and approachable, we would have easily replaced them or given you additional pots no problem, But you said nothing each and every time we chatted. Also being in the industry yourself, you would know, requesting an early arrival in the morning, especially over a busy holiday period, gives us very little time to prepare and check the room thoroughly, so if anything was missing it was probably just overlooked, in the hasty preparation. And again FYI our grading criteria lists all the items required in the kitchen and they and more were all available to you, and again it’s a budget studio apartment with a kitchenette not a 5 star Michelin kitchen, so maybe not suitable for a budding chef for a long stay. In conclusion we am sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay at Inyathi, but we really do feel that it was your choice to book the cheapest rate to stay in Knysna over the xmas holidays, when you really should have chosen something more comparable to your personal level of comfort, even if it was not your preferred level of finances. yours sincerely Helen and Riaan Inyathi Guest Lodge
