Situated on South Africa’s scenic Garden Route in the popular lagoonside town of Knysna, Belvidere Manor offers comfortable self-catering accommodation in single- and double-storey freestanding cottages, a range of delicious dining experiences and breathtaking natural surroundings. Built in 1849, the historic Manor House is an exquisite example of Cape Georgian architecture, and the quaint on-site pub, The Bell Tavern, is a restored farm building. The Manor House, tavern and cottages are surrounded by two hectares of landscaped gardens, set within the secluded Belvidere Estate, which is a leafy suburb of Knysna. From the terrace of the Manor House, there are unrivalled views across the lawns and swimming pool to the lagoon.

Staying at Belvidere Manor is always a high point of any trip to the Cape. The peaceful setting around a garden overlooking the lagoon is very special and being able to spread out into one of the cottages, for all the rooms are actually entire cottages, is great. The Bell pub on site is a very good place to enjoy a bottle of wine or a coffee and the food is varied and attractive. They have recently upgraded their WiFi so that it is now free and this is very welcome for travellers from outside South Africa.

However I can’t help thinking back to the time, maybe ten years ago, when the restaurant in the Manor House, Caroline’s, was really excellent. Unfortunately it has been merely adequate on our last few visits, but now it is to be avoided. We were told it had been relaunched as a seafood restaurant and so we ate there one evening and should have guessed from the fact that we were alone that it wasn’t going to work well. The food was still merely adequate and the service was friendly, but ground to a complete halt after the main was served. We were deeply unimpressed by this dispiriting experience.

Anyway, I highly recommend Belvidere Manor, but suggest give Caroline’s a miss.

We spent 2 nights here in December and had an amazing time at the Belvidere Manor and Knysna. There are 10-12 cottages in a huge garden surrounding a lovely pool, which has a great view overlooking the lagoon. The staff are excellent and friendly, especially Geoffrey who is a fantastic character and so helpful.
The room and pool area was excellently clean, even if the rooms are a little dated, but this is in keeping with the style of the manor and estate. The buffet breakfast was excellent and there is also a pub where you can eat and drink all night with the locals. It is around a 10 minute drive from the centre of Knysna which wasn't an issue as we had a car and taxi's were quick, cheap and easy to arrange.
Knysna is also a beautiful place where you can explore local history alongside the stunning lagoon.

We originally stopped here for lunch, and liked the ambience so much that we looked up the accommodation on the Net. When we found off-season discounts we promptly booked in, and it was one of the best decisions we made on this holiday, as we now have a fantastic place for future very relaxed stays. Nothing was too much for the owners and their personal touch was everywhere. The hot fire in our very neat and clean cottage was much appreciated, as was the electric blankets, it was winter, after all. As for the breakfast the next morning, my word, awesome does not begin to describe it: fruit platter, cheese platter, full English with coffee and juice - wow! The grounds are lovely with views down to the lagoon, and this would be a perfect place to settle down during summer to destress and get away from it all, We will definitely be back!

We have always enjoyed our Annual weeks stay in cottage 13 overlooking the Lagoon at Belvidere Manor. It is excellently appointed and caters for all our wishes and is in a great location. We find this quite a unique location which is why we have visited here for so many years. The only slight disappointment we found the breakfasts and service there standard had fallen.

As always, this was a very enjoyable experience. We always chose the 'Manor House' for its space, openness, friendly service, calmness, neat cottages, excellent breakfast, etc. We must mention the value added by Jeffrey's wonderful service in always providing 'fresh' food and drinks!

We had a bad experience last year but decided to give it another try. In spite of pre - booking and confirming time of arrival the reception was not ready and the key, to our room, was missing and could not be found. When the unit was opened I found to my horror a filthy knitted brown bed throw cover in dog and cat hairs! The fan was not working and its light shade missing. There were dirty marks on the walls. The management intervention was less than satisfactory and we checked out immediately.

We were invited back for complimentary stay, the invitation was accompanied by an invoice for the "complimentary" stay. This place does not deserve 4 stars from the SA Tourism board and we will be lodging a complaint with them as well.

Having stayed at Belvidere numerous times one expects things to be as before, not this time. Perhaps the recent change of ownership is a mitigating factor. The cottage was immaculate, the gardens, pool etc well cared for with one exception, the poolside sunshades are dirty and in tatters. Breakfast used to be a. Buffet, now one is served at table with a juice, no choice, a small plate of fruit, cheese and cooked meat no choice. Cooked breakfast prepared to order and very good, as long as bacon is not reheated. Jams and marmalade in individual sachets, not really 4 star stuff. Dinner choice now The Bell only, no bistro, and the menu at the Bell is not so extensive. Our favourite waiter, considered part of the furniture, we didn’t see at breakfast which was always fun. I would return next year but I will do a survey beforehand.

Dear dwilliamson044, Thank you for your feedback. Following the worldwide pandemic, there were many changes at Belvidere Manor. After taking over the management in October last year- we are hard at work to revive Belvidere Manor to it’s former glory in terms of re-opening Caroline’s restaurant and improving infrastructure. We are happy to report back that the all of our Team Members who were employed when we took over; including Supa Dupa are still with us.

The only weakness is the in-house restaurant: the location and the house make a particularly inviting impression. This is ruined when you order something to eat: you have to wait a long time, the food was extremely poor and the staff in the "Bell" were unwilling and untrained.
But: The impressive complex on a lagoon consists of spacious, excellently furnished cottages. The staff are extremely friendly and competent. Kneysa itself has little to offer as a small town, but Belvidere Manor is a gem!

This property contains 34 individually owned cottages managed and rented by Belvedere Manor. The quality of cottage is down to refurbishment by owner. Our cottage required an update to kitchen and bathroom. However the location, view and breakfast is outstanding. The on-site pub - The Bell, although small serves great food but booking recommended as it is very popular. Staff including the ever- smiling Jeffrey are friendly, helpful and enhance this venue.
