This is an old hotel that has been saved by turning it into a B&B and letting the remaining property out to business. No bar, no supper or lunch. The rooms are adequate with clean linen, airco, a shower and toilet, small desk, TV (only SABC and Etv), safe parking and really friendly staff. My wife prefers pork sausages to bacon so the got some for her and I was always greeted in a friendly manner by all of the staff. There are plenty of good places to eat close by in Knysna starting with the restaurant across the road and ending at the waterfront around ten minutes walk away from there. I would not recommend it for an entire holiday but if you are passing through while doing the garden route it is perfect for 2 to 3 days

The hotel has charm and is situated in the centre of town which allows one to walk all over town.
The staff, which were there on our previous visits, are friendly and accommodating.
We loved our stay and are looking forward to visiting again.

The royal hotel was very accommodating to our family needs. We made use of the 3 bedroom apartment. It was quite spacious and neat.
Breakfast was included and the staff was amazing in prep’ing it.
The highlight... was the gym at the hotel:) keeping fit while on holiday:)
There is also a hydro pool.

Parking outside the hotel ... pretty safe:)
It’s walking distance to the waterfront and quite convenient to superettes, laundry, shopping mall and garages.

Loved the charm of the hotel. Old-worldly and cosy. Rooms are fairly newly redone and has everything you’d expect from this rated hotel. Beds are clean/comfortable and neat rooms. Breakfast was served by friendly staff and was a decent portion. I expected less from the hotel, but will surely return and recommend. Its located right in towncenter but within easy access of the waterfront by foot. The place has a homely atmosphere. Dont expect 5 or even 3 star but overall its a good nights rest. Well equipped gym and a full bouquet of Dstv.
I shall return.

We stayed over in the hotel one night on a recent trip to Knysna and surrounds. Our room was comfortable and beautifully furnished. The shower was fantastic, the room was warm (it was freezing outside) and the bed comfortable with nice pillows and comfortable linen. The breakfast was sumptuous and the service was good. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

You certainly get less than you pay for. Parking is on the road except for the few who timeously request enclosed private parking. There is a ridiculous deposit for the key which is an old door key. The funiture in the room is ancient and dicrepid. Windows dont open. The toilet was stained yellow. Tv was miniscule in size. Breakfast was eggs, toast and bacon. Theres no variations or nothing for vegetarians. They dont cater for dinner guests. Theres no room service. The receptionist doubles as a manager and car guard and waiter when he serves meals in the morning. Seemed a bit too dingy for my taste. We would not be returning.

A really hopeless B&B, and not a hotel.
Windows in room don't close, breakfast has several items not available e.g. cereal and bread!!
Parking is on the road with a car guard!
Management are in no hurry to help!

Firstly there was a miscommunication when I deposited the full rental into the account number given. I scanned the deposit slip to the email address given.(Which by the way was not requested I did it on my own accord.) Only to promptly receive a return mail advising that they do not accept cheque deposits. This information was not conveyed up front. I had to place a stop payment on the cheque which cost me R40 in bank fees. They did however meet me half way and gave a R20 discount on the rental. When we arrived in Knysna to check in I was asked for a R200 key deposit, which was also not mentioned up front. After fussing about this they accepted R100 key deposit at this point I also made it quite clear that we had a tee off time of 7am and would there be someone available to refund the key deposit. I was emphatically assured that this would be the case, I also made them aware that we would have to forfeit breakfast, no compromise was offered not a sandwich or any other form of sustenance. The accommodation was adequate as we hardly spent any time there at all. Of course the photographs on the website were not what we got. Breakfast on the Saturday morning was more than sufficient and tasty. The staff was friendly. But no, The Royal Hotel Knysna SA would not be my first choice in future.

I cannot possibly agree with some of the reviews here. Our experience was so poor that we checked out after one night and we had paid for 3 nights in advance. The staff were pleasant but that's as far as it goes. The public areas were poor and lacking in any care and attention, little natural light in the rooms, no toiletries, a barely adequate breakfast. Sorry, but nothing would induce me to return!

The staff greeted us with curteousness the evening and have been most accommodating.
Our room was/is cleaned every day when we come from an event. The kitchen staff made us special omelettes. The muffins were a winner and after our featherbed run i made a bee line for the kitchen to get a second helping.
