We had the last room right at the back which we didnt mind, maybe because it could accomodate a family of 4. I'll start with the negatives (if you want to call it that), the room windows (facing the street) seemed to be bullet proof or sound proof glass and didnt open. Not a problem as there is airconditioning anyway but in the case of an emergency where the front is blocked or on fire, the only way out is through the bathroom window (which is luckily big enough :-). I'm not sure if the hotel has wifi, we were not informed at check inn. On the plus side, the hotel is a mix between old and new. I didnt mind the old lounge and my son loved the piano. The breakfast was good however the need to inform patrons that its only served till 9am. i also like the option of being able to have your breakfast on the patio. Unfortunately the weather didnt allow us. The rooms were clean and comfortable as was the bathrooms. The hotel was not bad at all. The staff were friendly. The location is good, close to the waterfront and eating places. The car parking is right in front of the building and we didnt have any issues there. The indoor pool was nice as is the gym.

Have stayed at the hotel on a few occasions during the past 6 months and in a different room every time. The hotel is old and quaint but the rooms are clean with comfortable beds and good quality linen, tea and coffee making facilities, tv with satellite channels, plenty of towels and a 24hr manned reception. Most of the staff members (especially the night staff) are friendly, with one or two being a bit odd and not very chatty but all in all not bad. Compared to other hotels not badly priced. Did not have breakfast so can’t comment on the food. Suggestion: Make sure that your booking is confirmed and perhaps double check before your trip as the hotel doesn’t make use of an electronic booking system and we had one occasion when we arrived after hours after a long day of traveling to find that the night clerk was not expecting us and the hotel was fully booked. Not much to do at the hotel (there is a pool and gym though) but great for passing through Knysna, or being out and about all day and just looking for accommodation or for business travelers. I would recommend the hotel and stay here again.

I cannot possibly agree with some of the reviews here. Our experience was so poor that we checked out after one night and we had paid for 3 nights in advance. The staff were pleasant but that's as far as it goes. The public areas were poor and lacking in any care and attention, little natural light in the rooms, no toiletries, a barely adequate breakfast. Sorry, but nothing would induce me to return!

This hotel hold alot of history. we were allocated a family room which sleeps six. More than adequate for the four of us. The bedrooms were so comfortable with TV in each room. The bathroom may need an upgrade. The room had a fully furnished kitchen and dining area. Breakfast was Delicious with a freshly cooked meal ads you order So you know you are going to eat a good meal before embarking on your sightseeing adventure. Well worth the price There is even a gym in the hotel..

The royal hotel was very accommodating to our family needs. We made use of the 3 bedroom apartment. It was quite spacious and neat. Breakfast was included and the staff was amazing in prep’ing it. The highlight... was the gym at the hotel:) keeping fit while on holiday:) There is also a hydro pool. Parking outside the hotel ... pretty safe:) It’s walking distance to the waterfront and quite convenient to superettes, laundry, shopping mall and garages.

And that's not in a bad way. Far from it. It was a delight to stay at this old colonial hotel. Steeped in history, this hotel has not lost its charm. Most modern comforts are catered for. Maybe not for the most discerning traveler, but if you value interest and charm then Knysna offers non better. Perfectly located just off Main St, about 10 minutes stroll from the vibrant waterfront. Hearty english breakfast served in restaurant or terrace. Safe parking at door. Owner run with care and love.

We spent 2 nights at this hotel while driving along the Garden Route. The room was a very decent size with comfortable beds. The rate included breakfast which was a really great breakfast! Definitely one of the best breakfasts we had at a hotel during our travels in South Africa. Staff at the hotel were friendly and accommodating. Only frustrating part was the bathroom "door" it's this strange shutter that you pull across, except its so old that it doesn't shut all the way. Which is incredibly awkward when travelling with friends! Probably wouldn't stay here again if we did return to Knysna as there was nothing that majorly stood out about the hotel to make me want to return.

Loved the charm of the hotel. Old-worldly and cosy. Rooms are fairly newly redone and has everything you’d expect from this rated hotel. Beds are clean/comfortable and neat rooms. Breakfast was served by friendly staff and was a decent portion. I expected less from the hotel, but will surely return and recommend. Its located right in towncenter but within easy access of the waterfront by foot. The place has a homely atmosphere. Dont expect 5 or even 3 star but overall its a good nights rest. Well equipped gym and a full bouquet of Dstv. I shall return.

My husband and I were traveling the Garden Route and stopped at the Royal Hotel Knysna. The hotel is so charming and located in a great spot, within easy walking distance of many places in town. The staff was very friendly, and the breakfast was wonderful. Wish we had more time to use the gym that was available, as it was very impressive!
