I stayed at the hotel in April for 2 nights and upon my return from taking my clients out I had noted that my room was not cleaned. My bed was made up (bit shabby) but the bathroom was not cleaned and my room was not vacuumed, my dirty towel was still hanging in the bathroom and dirty cups and a glass was still standing there. They need to ensure that guest rooms are cleaned properly. Regards Yolande

Dear Yolande. Thank you for your review. I apologise for the experience you had with your room. Normally, the rooms are cleaned,towels changed and floors vacuumed. I will follow up on this and get to the bottom of it. Once again, I apologise for this. Hope to see you again next time you come to Knysna.

We spent one night at The Russel Hotel. It was surprisingly good accommodation. We chose to be on the top floor and it suited our needs perfectly for the night. There are stairs that lead to the top floor and we were pleasantly surprised at the delicious breakfast that they provided the following morning. If you’re looking at well priced accommodation for a night or two, I’d recommend The Russell Hotel.

• Terrible breakfast with limited options, no fruit, muesli, yogurt. The options included only bacon and egg or dry porridge with milk. It would have been better to go to Wimpy;
• Walked up three flights of stairs carrying luggage with no help offered (there is no lift);
• Bath literally had a rim of soap scum, basically filthy;
• The fridge was unplugged and had a stinge of rotten meat, no one bothered to clean it;
• No DSTV channels only Open View;
• Rude and disrespectful receptionist;
• No air-conditioning in the room;
• Room opposite of an old age, no privacy at all;
• Poor ventilation in room.

Stayed in a family room here in a pinch with wife and 2 kids for a week. The family room was big enough for the kids to run around and still all be contained and safe. The 2 single beds were very firm (too much for my liking), but overall everything was good value for money.

Have to commend the staff, particularly the reception staff over this period - they were incredibly friendly and accommodating, and were happy to help entertain our toddler while we had breakfast - going above and beyond in this case.

When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted with a smile, however when checking in we were told that our reservation can be seen on the extranet but not on the res system even though I chatted to the hotel after making the reservation.

We were then taking to the room, which was not the room we booked or saw on Booking.com, we even checked the pics and the room was definitely different, but alas it was clean and liveable for the 2 nights stay,even though hubby and I slept in the single bed rooms as it felt weird that our 5 and 6 year old had to sleep at the main door of the room and be a little way away from us. Hot water in our room was also an issue but the staff was happy to sort that out.
Breakfast was great, really really enjoyed it.

Our stay was excellent. We got a call while we were on our way, shows they cared about us. Staff were friendly and helpful. Maybe they can consider providing a meal especially for guests coming in late and the other restaurants are fully booked or closed especially during the festive season, some small service with no big variety.

I was not happy with the limited breakfast that did not cater for the nonpork eaters. The only and one and only one meaty item on the breakfast was pork rashers as a result my whole family (the five of us) had to live with that flimsy breakfast with no meat item at all for 5 days. At least one beef or chicken sausages would have made a huge difference.

I also could not enjoy my muesli because the yogurt was stretchy or stringy, almost slimy. Please change the supplier of yoghurt or avoid poor temperature control. As a result, I only ate brown flakes and milk.

The other lady, the chubby lady (not Mercy) must check her attitude and remember to confirm the breakfast orders.

Other than that, the room and cleaning service was good. I also enjoyed the coffee.

The hotel is accommodating and beautiful. Was very disappointed with the hot water issue. I had to wait for 40 minutes to get hot water to bath at night when tired from Johannesburg. That is a total turnoff to ask for a geyser to be turned on

Hotel was in a great location. The parking was secure. Our rooms were quiet and did not hear any other guests even thought there was a school rugby tour also staying. Some contents like crockery in the room need an updating, but the rooms were clean and comfortable.
Excellent value for money and good breakfasts served.
