It was absolutely peaceful and a beautiful space to stay in. The entire property is clean, lush lawns, and the interior of the house, and our room were always cleaned and fresh. Erik and Dorothy are amazing, so friendly and helpful, and truly enjoyed our stay 💛

Hi Warren, thank you very much for staying with us and it's great to hear that you enjoyed it. That's exactly what we are trying to 'put' out there, the Country House is a peaceful, clean and beautiful place. We hope to see you in the near future again. Stay safe, Erik.

Owners are very kind and helpful. We spent 2 greats night. The place is very peaceful and quiet. Room are clean and big with everything you need : TV, little fridge with drinks, coffee, tea. There is a "honesty bar" one the lobby which means you can take wine, beers and write it down on the notebook what you took and payed at the check-out. The garden is wonderfull with great pool and terrasse where you can have breakfast (breakfast is really good). the only weakness the hotel is not downtown there is nothing around - you have to take your car each time but it worst it ! we recommend it

We booked into their 'self catering' cottage, paid a 50% deposit of R820 via Credit Card, and when we arrived we were directed to a dungeon of a room, built under the main house. We arrived at 14h30, to find that the cleaners were still busy in the room, and were advised by Penny the manageress that it was because the painters had been busy in the room. The living room seemed acceptable but when we walked into the bedroom which was actually built 'underground' the smell of damp cement and carpets was over-powering. It was clear that the venue was well aware of the problem - they had set up an automated deodoriser which squirted appalling aerosol into the air every minute or so. We called Penny who came to the room immediately and explained that there was no way we could possibly live in that room for 1 night never mind the two we were booked in. She agreed that it was terrible and in fact stated that she would not be able to sleep there either. She very kindly assisted with the name and number of an alternative venue, and informed us that she will arrange a refund of our deposit. That was Friday the 25th April. We have sent an email to Penny's bosses requesting the refund and we still wait for an acknowledgement. We will be taking this matter to our attorneys. ( By the way; Penny also told us that International Tourists who had booked into the B&B rooms had also complained about the place and had left for alternative venues. Shocking.

Dave Dave, Please get your facts right. How could you have emailed us on the 25th of April, while you were only arriving the 29th of April? And we refunded you the 5th of May and emailed you accordingly, but you apparently you do not read your emails on a daily basis, since we received your 'attorney threat' a day later. And with weekend and public holiday in between, we think our response time is not too bad. Underground, dungeon? Maybe your vision was a bit blurred, the unit is on ground level (same level as our pool) and maybe the fact that the house in built on a slope, like most houses in Knysna, gave you that idea. Last but not least, please read the review of AlokMulye which came in 3 days ago. He and his family stayed in the same unit and they thought it was one of the highlights of his holiday. Kind regards, Ypie and Erik

You must choose this hotel carefully depending on what you want to do. If you prefer isolation, small private swimming pool, late breakfast and are not bothered about anything else, this is the place for you.

We wanted to explore Knysna and this hotel was a bad choice. We were also somewhat misled by luxury 4 star description.

1. Isolated location- well away from town. You can not step outside. It is not safe after 7 pm.
2. Cumbersome access arrangements - electric gate etc.
3. No attendant after 7 pm.
4. No air conditioning. Only a pedestal fan.
5. Breakfast was available only at 8 am. We were clearly warned- do not go to breakfast room before 8 am! Every other hotel where we stayed in South Africa, had BF starting at 6.30 am. This seriously delayed the start of our sightseeing day.
6. BF was extremely basic quality and no variety/ choice. The vegetarian options were bread and cereals! Every other hotel we stayed at, were happy to make hot porridge at request but not this one.
7. Very loud bird/animal noises at 5 am waking you up from sleep.
8. Dirty hand towel not replaced. Soap bar almost finished but not replaced. When you return at 9 pm, there is no one to talk to about these small issues.

By no stretch of imagination, this a four star luxury accommodation.

Some people may like this. We did not.

the (quite) warm hospitality of the owners do not allow to give a good review of the structure. First of all, the guesthouse is not close to the coast, nor near Knisna, but in a peripheral residential area; but, ok, you can know this if you look at their site before book, not as we did.
Then, we paid for a luxury accomodation but, as you can see from the pictures attached, there wasn't any luxury; we were told that we were given that apartment to make us feel "more comfortable", but we booked the "luxury" for three people so they had to maintain the required standard (provided that they do not consider as luxury the modest apartment we have given). A last note about cleaning: as you can see from the pictures, it is not 4 stars, as there is mold and dirt almost everywhere. I see no reason to go there purposely.

We stayed 2 nights with a family of 4 persons. It was already 7pm (dark) when we arrived. The welcome from Ypie was warm. Then she presented our room. For us, this was a disaster to experience. The refrigerator was off because everything in it was frozen. The ice was melting and inside there was rust. The carpet looked dirty and the bathroom furniture was broken. In first instance we thought it is only for 2 nights and left for dinner. Reluctantly we came back and discovered that there was hair in the bath and the trash was not emptied. In the children room the electrical wires of the night lamp went under the pillows to the socket on the other side of the bed. At that moment my conclusion was to leave the place and find something else but it was already after 10pm. Finally I met Eric. He was friendly and understanding and offered us as alternative 2 separate rooms without all previous disadvantages. Next morning the breakfast was very OK and everybody was happy. We started our trip of the day and had a car breakdown, not far from the lodge. We called the company as well as Eric. Eric was very helpful and came to us to pick us up. When arriving at the lodge we saw our towels lying outside on a picnic table (no free of bird sh...) with the intention to dry in the sun. Eric told us that afterwards the towels will be placed back and that it was normal because he has no problem with using the towel from his wife and so they could save on the laundry. My daughter was not pleased to know the change exist she gets my towel. For us, the maximum level of incompetence was reached and we were happy we could leave next morning.

Dear Willie, Thank you for taking the effort to write a review. We always appreciate feedback from our guests, but do however need to rectify a few things. We, our staff, always clean every room every day during people’s stay (except our self-catering unit, which gets serviced twice a week) and obviously when guests leave, a full cleaning is done including replacing the linen, towels etc. in all our rooms. By the time that you decided that you did not want to stay in the family unit, it was 11h30 pm and we upgraded you to two separate rooms which we were made to believe were more to your satisfaction. The next morning, when Ypie and I inspected the family unit, we could not find any hair in the bath (but maybe you took it out?), or any broken bathroom furniture. And the piece of paper (which you had told us was a sanitary napkin) in the waste bin turned out be a wrap from our recently unwrapped toilet paper. Our apologies. We indeed have a socket on the wall under the bed that feeds both bedside lamps. We do not know what is wrong with that. We do apologise for the fridge. The thermostat was not functioning properly and we were not able to replace it on that day. Our maid, who has been working at the Knysna Country House for 8 years now, has always dried towels in the sun for ca. ½ hour before putting them back into the bathrooms. She is very well aware of where which towel comes from and therefore where it should go back to. This is the first time we received a complaint regarding this. She furthermore makes sure the outside area is clean before she puts them out and SHOULD a bird leave its mark the towel will obviously be replaced immediately. Furthermore we do replace towels for long(er) stay guests after 3 days, unless we find the towels on the floor. Then they are replaced instantly. I cannot recall saying that it was to save energy and I do not think any hotel uses a tumble drier for that daily drying purpose. The ‘maximum level of incompetence’…? We have nothing to say to that, we are sure our guests can judge for themselves. Kind regards, Erik & Ypie

Maybe we had to many expectations after al the beautiful hotels we had till now.
They try to be really helpful and kind and also it is situated in a very nice area. The swimmingpool is ok.....
But in common the house is dated. No airco, bad condition, fungi in the shower.... not what we expected (when you book the luxury room). Especially when you read the recommendation on trip advisor. The dogs are very friendly but keeping the dogs away from my breakfast is not what i prefer.... After we gave feedback in the morning about some things we mentioned that feedback was not appreciated.
So don't be angry with us.... but see this as feedback and do something with it before trip advisor is not your best reference anymore.

Dear Noel, We are not angry with you, it just the classic example, coming from our experience, seeing you walk into our guesthouse, knowing immediately we cannot please guests like you and we will see a bad review somewhere. And indeed. Our guesthouse is dated (just as everything else that is built) and, more specifically, your room was built 9 years ago in 2008. The furniture and beds in your room are not that old, they are bought in 2011, so 6 years old. Keeping dogs away from breakfast is our policy. We had 16 more guests to take care of and not everybody liked to have dogs around when they are eating. We do not have A/C in our rooms and we do not advertise that anywhere. Bad condition and fungi? All I can say the we had an elderly English couple staying in the same room as you for 3 nights and they absolutely loved it. My apologies for not picking up your feedback. I still cannot remember what you said about what and normally memory is quite good. Feedback is always appreciated and when we can assist, we always will. I am trying to see your review as feedback, but since I am not sure what your real complaints are, I can do not much about it. Regards, Erik

We stayed here for 1 night. We arrived after a full day of driving and sightseeing from Addo to Knysna.

There was a warm welcome and good explanation of the area. They arranged a (free)shuttle service to a restaurant wich was superb!

The rooms were luxe whit good beds and they were clean. A nice bathroom whit a shower and a bath.

Breakfast was outside and one of the best we had in South Africa.

The staff and owners are very friendly and helpfull!

Next day we did a boat trip in Knysna at the Waterfront wich is a nice place to hangout for a few hours.
