Situated on top of a hill, we surrounded by majestic views of the Knysna Heads (famous entrance to the sea), Knysna lagoon, the Knysna river and the Garden Route's Outeniqua mountains, this stone and timber guest house nestles in an acre of award winning gardens, visited by 180 species of bird and small wildlife such as bush buck, lynx, monkeys and bushpig. You would be hard pressed to find a better location to stay. Just 2 kms from the town of Knysna with its fabulous shops and restaurants, beaches within 10 kms, forest walks closeby, Plettenberg Bay 30 kms away and both the Tsitsikamma National Park and Oudtshoorn easy day trips. The Guest House is eclectic and intriguing with a mix of building materials, most of which were found on site. Stella and Richard's place was wonderful as always. The location is ideal, offering both tranquillity and easy access to local attractions. Narnia itself is a delightful blend of homely comfort and elegant efficiency.

The rooms were immaculately clean, spacious, and tastefully decorated, ensuring a relaxing environment. The self-catering facilities were a highlight, equipped with everything we needed to feel at home. It was a pleasure to prepare meals in the well-appointed kitchen, which added a lovely, personalized touch to our stay.

Stella and Richard deserve a special mention for their warm hospitality and attention to detail. They provided us with all the necessary information about the area, including recommendations for dining and sightseeing, which greatly enhanced our experience.

The peaceful surroundings, combined with the comfort of the B&B, made for a truly rejuvenating retreat. It's rare to find a place that offers such a perfect balance of privacy and care.

Beautiful self catering apartment with the most wonderful view of Knysna Heads and Lagoon. Set in a very pretty garden with a shared pool. The apartment was lovely and bright and airy with a fabulous verandah - hammock, 2 swinging chairs, table and chairs for eating and a braai.
No dishwasher but the maid will come and wash up every morning and the braai will be cleaned out for you too. Lovely, friendly hosts.
Safe and secure area too - we will be back!

Whether you are looking for quiet, special places in a beautiful garden in which to read a book or meditate - followed by a very special holistic massage from the owners' resident son Jamie, or whether you want to lie around the pool enjoying a spectacular view, or a walk to the dam accompanied by 2 friendly and entertaining dogs - then this is the place to come.
Having managed a guest house myself, I am extremely observant of the little touches that go a long way in making a guest feel at home - and you cannot fault Stella Sohn in this department!
Truly special and we will frequent as often as possible...

Views are great, but you pay for them. Be warned however that the smaller unit of the 2 is attached to the owners house, who is very overbearing and abrupt and tends to encroach ones privacy. Considering the price paid, it was quite annoying.

Response from Richard & Stella Sohn, Owner at Narnia Farm Guest House
Responded 10 Jan 2025
I havent seen this review until now . It makes me sad that you had this experience at narnia that has always been so full of love and laughter . We had been running the guest for 26 years when you stayed and guests privacy has always been a priority as is being friendly ! I can’t think of who behaved this way with you . Perhaps it was just a bad day ? So sorry that this was the impression you had of our lovely guest house and the team who runs it with us .

We stayed in the Cottage at Narnia during the weekend of 24 & 25 September 2011, as my husband was participating in a 100km mountain bike challenge. Our booking was for bed & breakfast. Breakfast being charged at R75 per head, being the rate when our booking was made.
The owner, Stella Sohn, offered to pack my husband a breakfast as he would be leaving at 4am the next morning. The packed breakfast consisted of 4 slices of rye bread with scrambled egg & bacon. Plus a (blemished) apple, a small fruit juice, and a small tub of yogurt (kiddie size). The bread was semi-defrosted with parts of it being wet. The egg was dry and lumpy with bits falling out between the slices. Very unappetizing to say the least. This was valued at R75.
My friend and I had breakfast served. This consisted of 2 slices of toasted rye bread, 2 croissants, 1 bowl of fruit salad, 1 bowl of yogurt with muesli sprinkles, 1 bowl of yogurt with fruit preserve, 2 glasses of orange juice, filter coffee, and was accompanies by butter, cheese and jam. This was valued at R150, i.e. R75 per head. The food was of mediocre/poor quality, for example the orange juice was very little real orange and a sickly sweet taste. I could not drink mine.
We were very disappointed and angry at the same time, for someone having the gall to charge R75 for a breakfast of this quantity and quality. Unfortunately we did not take a picture of the breakfast before we started eating, probably because of shock and disbelief. However, we include a picture of the finished tray. We did not want their breakfast the 2nd morning of our stay.
I notice that Stella has now increased her breakfast price to R100 per head - I will reserve comment, as I am literally speechless. Judging by our experience, we feel that their breakfasts did a disservice to the South African hospitality industry, and I wouldn't want foreign visitors to think this is the norm. Prospective visitors should just do their homework to see what they can get in Knysna for their R100 - the standard is rather a full English breakfast for half the price. (See second picture.)

Response from Narniagardenroute, Owner at Narnia Farm Guest House
Responded 10 Feb 2012
Your review on Tripadvisor has saddened me especially as your stay was actually given to you free of charge in lieu of a prize donated by me to a cycling event in Knysna. Your booking was to self-cater but you asked for breakfast and so we made a plan for you. Perhaps I should have explained to you the kind of breakfast we serve at Narnia – free range eggs, fresh croissants, Mon Petit Pain bread, a fruit salad made with 7 different fruits, natural yoghurt with a homemade strawberry sauce, real butter, 6 month matured cheddar, Woolworths, or Fruit & Veg, freshly squeezed orange juice, homemade jam and Mastertons filter coffee. You were told that R75 per person is for a continental breakfast and that R100 per person is for a cooked breakfast (despite your husband not paying this rate, he was given bacon and egg sandwiches in his packed breakfast and by the way 2 different fruits and a normal sized yoghurt) so your statement that I have put my breakfast rate up is not true. This breakfast and variations of it has been served to thousands of guests at Narnia for 13 years and yours is the first complaint I have ever had! In fact I have had calls from guests on the road to thank me for the delicious packed breakfast! You did not have to have breakfast – you could have made your own or gone out to, for example, the Wimpy (where a plate of bacon, egg, sausage and tomato with one slice of toast – no juice, fruit, yoghurt, tea, coffee or croissants – would have cost you R35) - if you had preferred! The photograph in your review is also not honest, because your breakfast was delivered on 2 trays – it would not have fitted onto one! Your photo is, astoundingly, of a finished breakfast! If it was so awful why did you not come to the kitchen and say so? I am sure also as a woman you understand the present cost of food ( one croissant costs R8!). In the last 2 years in South Africa the cost of food has more than doubled. Our rates however have not!!! Most people do not begrudge us making SOME money on what we have taken the trouble to shop for and prepare, to say nothing of the cost on maintaining the beautiful garden it was served in! If you have been onto my web site you will note that for 2012 we have put on a cash/recession rate of R400 pp to self-cater and R500 pp B+B. This rate does not include an annual increase as is custom in any guest house and is less than our last years rate by R100 pp so we are hardly in the business of ripping people off. Finally I must say that I find it a great pity that the ambiance of Narnia with its award winning gardens, majestic pool, spectacular views and 4-star graded rooms was lost on you and that the only comment you could think to make on a site viewed by the world at large was on one morning's breakfast.

Our overall experience was terrific, helped by our hosts Stella and Richard who were superb, and our enjoyement was their first priority. The staff also enhanced our 5 day stay, always willing to help and assist. Our Rooms "Poolside and The Shed were wonderful, noted by the cleanliness, and authenticity of the Decor. Clearly put together to show the the feeling and warmth of South Africa. The gardens, views and ambience of Narnia allowed us to relax and completely "chill out". Self-Catering was easy and with use of the Brai, outside eating became a pleasure.
If there was a downside, and it was only minor, it was distance from Knysna, not far, but we required the car. However this was compensated by Richard's invite to Simola Golf Club. I've played all over the world but Simola is in my "Top Ten".
Overall a Wonderful Holiday.

Our stay at Narnia Guesthouse was just lovely!! A view overlooking the Knysna lagoon is absolutely breathtaking. On top of the view, the property is amazing with an extraordinary garden. Included is a beautiful pond with the added bonus of a picturesque tree with a swing! If that wasn't enough, the host Stella and her amazing team made the stay above and beyond exceptional. When in Knysna, do yourself a favor and book this as your next weekend away!!! Ps - the two lovely dogs are the cherry on the cake :)

A last minute decision to spend Christmas in Knysna made it difficult to find good accommodation for 2 couples for 5 days over the holiday! What a lovely surprise to find Narnia had just the perfect option for us and when we drove up the hill into the property we instantly felt the peace and tranquility of the property. What a find!!
Narnia is very secluded, quiet and high up overlooking the lagoon and inland countryside. The gardens are spectacular and a joy to relax in and just take in the views. We stayed in The Lookout which was very comfortable, perfectly adequate for home from home living. Our daughter and son in law stayed in the really beautiful Pool House which has a stunning veranda overlooking the pool.Decor and design is fabulous....quirky and fun! Braai areas are great and wood is supplied each day. Stella and Richard were wonderful hosts and could not do enough for us during our stay. Thank you to you both for a memorable 5 days in your truly lovely home on the hill!

We stayed at the Narnia for 3 nights and loved it. We've been to different places in Knysna and around. I Never before even thought about a Place to stay in that Part of Knysna - turned out to be a mistake. The Main House in itself is a true miracle and i couldn't believe it was built from scratch. A Collection of all Kind of pieces and parts dilligently selected and forming a stunning place.
Wie stayed at the Pool House which is really nice, spacious, with views down the valley.
The breakfast was yummy and the hosts are truely beautiful people. Enjoyed golfing with Richard, Massage done by Jamie - and the wake-up call in the morning.
Sure will return next Time.
