Enjoy the warm welcome by manager Fischer in this backpackers which feels like a home away from home.
The dorms are not too spacious, beds are okay and bathrooms are clean.
There is a well-equipped kitchen and a nice fireplace.

If you are travelling on the Garden Route, do not miss to spend a night at this place. Super cool people are hosting you in this female touched hostel. Beautifully designed by mother and daugther, this place is cute and comfortable.
A warm and truly personal service without any unnecessary pampering. Niel gives you the best advices on restaurants or activities. Thanks a lot! See you next time!

I enjoyed my stay here, the staff were very friendly, and the facilities were great - nice kitchen, comfy lounge and stoep. My one gripe would be that the two showers are in the same room as the toilets so you can sometimes have a bit of a wait. Other than that... Good location in the centre of town but far enough off the main road for it to be quiet at night. More of a chilled place than a party place also, good if that's what you're looking for.

My partner and I spent a night at Knysna Backpackers in May this year. Their website boasts the following statement:

"We offer the discerned traveller peace and tranquility in this beautiful town on the Garden Route."

Peace and tranquility - the Knysna version of these terms is probably unlike what most of us would describe as a "peaceful" experience:
A loud banging noise woke us up at approximately 3.30AM in the morning. My partner got up to investigate, only to discover three men attempting to break in through the bathroom window. He was threatened with a knife, at which point we got hold of the emergency services.

We of course reported this the following morning, at which the manager (a better term would be "mismanager") of the establishment, accused us of lying. She refused to believe what had happened and instead of offering an apology, abuse was hurled at us over the phone.

As far as the lodging itself goes, we of course were not expecting "Hilton" standards. The room was clean, although extremely basic. The prominent signs warning all guests to not leave ANY valuables in their cars, should perhaps have given us an inkling as to the unsavoury area that this backpackers is located in.

Reception only opens at 8AM in the morning, so attempting to check out any earlier and get back any relevant deposits for room keys (yes, you pay a deposit for your key, as I assume it is only natural for tourists gracing backpacker type establishments to run off with the room keys), is virtually impossible.

If you are after affordable accommodation, in an unsafe area, with an early morning knife attack and abuse by the establishment's manager thrown in for free, then by all means ... book a room at Knysna Backpackers. Enjoy your stay!!

Friendly and helpful staff with comfortable, neat and clean dorms. Loads of dvds available to chill and watch in the communal lounge.
Free coffee and tea in the kitchen- however no milk / creamer provided.

Decent bathroom and facilities, but bunk beds in the dorms do not have proper ladders so it's a bit difficult to get up and down.

Service:The woman working at the reception was a little impatient with us. She did show us around but was not very friendly, we had to figure the activities on our own. Maybe it was a bad day~

Value: Good~

Environment: The kitchen is well-equipped. The old Victorian house is absolutely beautiful, has a "vintage" charm to it, and they have a nice garden in the back. Wi-Fi was free and accessible from our room (maybe because we were close to the reception).

Cleanliness: 5 stars! Probably one of cleanest backpackers I've stayed~

Location: Very conveniently located, close to the main street and walking distance from the Waterfront.

Rooms: We had a double room with shower, the room was spacious and the bed was comfy. We had tea and coffee available in the room.

Please take care! That Backpackers/Hostel has no fences and no windowscreans/ grilles! We get robbed there! No security man is at night there, also cars often broken up, told us the ownerin (and some other guests ) of that hostel after the incursion! She is only very upset about it, but that doesn't help anyone who get robbed there! The room beyond the wintergarden isn't save, everyone from the street can look into your room and break through the window, like the thief did it, when we slept there! It isn't a good choice to take that backpackers, even not for one night!

Response from KnysnaQueen, Owner at Knysna Backpackers
Responded 02 Feb 2014
Understandably i am very upset and deeply regret this incident. I would like to respond to some statements made by Meike that is not true. We do have burglar bars in front of all windows and doors that can open up. The window in the room they slept in was one that could not open - therefore no burglar bar was installed - we have done so right after the incident., as we realized that some guests probably do not know to let curtains and blinds down at night time. The room has curtains and blinds that should be closed by the guest when they go to sleep, unfortunately these girls failed to do so therefore leaving them very vulnerable and a passer -by saw an "open invitation'" to look through the window and saw "all their valuable items" lying on a bedside table right in front of this window and took his chance. We do provide a chest of drawers in the room where safety conscious guests put their valuables and it is quite safe in there. As far as the second accusation is concerned : "we do not have a security guard" on duty , - we actually DO have a guard 6 days a week and like luck would have it - he was "off duty" that night . Just for the information of travelers reading this , the incident took place at 6.15 in the morning and not during the night when one would have thought burglaries happen. As i told these girls - we are in the "process" of putting up a fence but unfortunately it is a long process and does not happen over night. Likewise with break-ins into cars - i appeal to all travelers to please not leave ANY ITEMS in a car / vehicle ! It is not safe nor is it just at your stop over accommodation establishment that incidences happen that cars are broken into! Unfortunately if there are items lying in a car "on display'" - your car is at risk of being broken into no matter where you are. Yes us as accommodation establishments must do everything possible to ensure the safety of our guests but having said that guests must also take responsibility for their "actions" and sad as it is, when traveling in other countries PLEASE consider ALL ASPECTS of your safety . Muriel ( owner )

Stayed there two nights when my car was broken into. Owner was unsympathetic but the police gave me an ear full on how often it happens there. The police mentioned that the owner was asked to put up a fence/gate but refused as it cost too much. The owner was nasty and incredibly rude. I feel bad for the underpaid employees who work in fear of their boss. The atmosphere felt dreary and unfriendly. Loud wooden floors and TV in the middle of the place. Safety first, stay somewhere else!!

Response from KnysnaQueen, Owner at Knysna Backpackers
Responded 31 May 2012
After 15 years of having this backpackers i must say this was a very unpleasant incident with a very MEAN and NASTY little man who THINKS he knows it all! Maybe in the States (where he comes from) he knows everything , but still has a lot to learn about South-Africa. The bottomline of the whole incident was because his car was broken into ...... after being verbally warned and requested not to leave ANYTHING in his car, as well as NOTICES in all the rooms of the house , warning and requesting guests NOT TO LEAVE ANYTHING IN THE CARS. HE KNEW BETTER !!...he left a bag in the car and of course the car was broken into. He then immediately DEMANDED a "discount" ( with a very bad attitude!!) and i refused the discount as he CHOSE to stay in the dorm, ( yes not the brightest and lightest room in the house - after all it is the budget rate room ) only paid R120 per night which included a FREE breakfast ( from eggs right through to the Nutella spread ) FREE internet/wireless, spotless ablution, kitchen and bedding.....and i quote from our guest book " the cleanest backpackers we have stayed in". There was nothing wrong with what we offered to justify a "discount" ... he unfortunately knew better at the end of the day not to take note of our warnings. As for the comment from the police.....maybe if they do their job better.... we will not have to put up fences etc!!.... by the way places with HIGH SECURITY FENCES AND LIGHTS AND ALARMS also get broken into.. 2 days after the incident at our place another hostel with 2 meter high fence around ,cars were broken into. Unfortunately CRIME IS A HUGE PROBLEM IN SOUTH-AFRICA! Travellers please take note of the management warnings!! We just might know "better." Accommodation establishments in general are being targeted ..... not just our backpackers. As to the rest of his comments i am not even going to bother to respond to , as he does not know me! He made a judgement of my character in the heat of the moment! Some staff has been working with me in this backpackers for 15 years! ........i just might also be doing something right......
