This was the perfect retreat for my children and I during the pandemic. We felt as if we were the only ones at Forest Edge. The area if filled with beautiful forests and water ways in which to hike or just relax, picnic or take a scenic drive through, without encountering many people or at times anyone.
Out accommodation was great! Everything we needed was provided and we loved the outdoor shower with both hot and cold water. The kitchen was well equipped, we had a braai and Weber at our disposal and our cottage was tastefully decorated.
We were also close enough to Knysna to drive through for lunch and do some shipping.
An all-round great experience!

What a wonderful time we spent at the Foxglove Cottage!! The Cottage was clean, bedding good quality and small detail in the cottage made the stay really unforgettable. The outside shower was one of the highlights every day!! Dries and his wife welcomed us and they, as well as the other staff, were very friendly and helpful. We can honestly recommend the Forest Edge for a relaxing and tranquil stay near to nature. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful quiet farm with us!!

This was our second visit to Forest Edge this year and as usual we enjoyed the peace and tranquility of this delightful setting. The cottage is very well designed and extremely comfortable. Luckily we were able to braai out in the open on all three evenings although there is a weber braai there to use on the covered veranda. We took a short route through the Circles in the forest which I must admit we did find a bit challenging at our age as you find your way over the roots of trees. However, nevertheless a lovely walk in the peaceful surroundings. We would thoroughly recommend this accommodation to anybody looking for peace and tranquility and the sound of birds.

The short: Overpriced, not luxury as advertised, not clean, with broken and tired furniture and unkempt gardens. The area though is very pretty and sitting outside listening to the birds is unfortunately broken by persistent barking dogs nearby. It has potential but lack the inputs, effort and labour required as well as the right people.
Perceptions, experiences and expectations are dictated by previous ones, so my evaluation is relative to my past experiences. What I see as basic may be regarded as luxurious by another. We checked out of a luxurious unit on a nearby golf estate the morning of the day we checked in. For R150 per night more than FE, we had a 2 bedroom all en suite house more than 4 times the size of the FE unit, with 4 large full DSTV TVs, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher and even airfryer etc. What a contrast would FE be, hence, my evaluation that it is way overpriced, neglected and not clean.
Management is an embarrassment to anyone in the guest industry! The lady treats you as child and the husband would not stop talking. Really unprofessional. It seems like a side hustle for retirees.
The cottage is 'serviced', but all that is done is the fireplace is supplied with some kindling, the dishes are washed, and the braai is cleaned. Nothing is dusted, cleaned or swept. The place remained as dirty as the day we arrived here. All dishes are full of drying cloth fluff!
Internet was only fixed on our last day after I had harsh words with management and contacted the owner directly. Oh, that gravel road was in terrible state, granted shortly after rains.
And after all I paid for all these advertised things like luxury, cleaning, internet etc but got nothing! Succinctly, the place is small, cramped and poorly equipped. I took photos showing what I say herein, and anyone can ask to see them.

Hi Johan, as you can see from the other 659 reviews on TripAdvisor, some as recent as a few days ago (another 5 star review), we are a PROUD establishment and we've been shocked to our core with your experience and your review. It is SO important to us to ensure that ALL our guests have an unforgettable (pleasant) experience at our magical forest review and that all our amazing guests return home refreshed and re-energized. We've clearly failed you dismally and for that I can only again profusely apologize. We will continue to work hard at ensuring that we do everything in our power to keep our amazing guests happy and to never have a repeat of a horrible review like yours. It is clear to me that Forest Edge was definitely not the right place for you and I know that the crazy Eskom level 6 load shedding frustrated you as it played havoc with our Wi-Fi, but these things are really out of our control. We only wish you the best for the future.

Comfortable accommodation far from the madding crowd, but close to the best hiking and biking trails in the Rheenendal area. The cottages are well set up for cold and warm conditions, and Knysna is less than half an hour away if you really need to go into town. Buffels Baai beach is also close for those beach breaks - one of the best swimming, walking and surfing spots on the Garden Route.

We LOVE Forest Edge! Management and staff are friendly and most helpful. The accommodation is very comfortable, spotless and is equipped with every amenity you can think of. The Knysna Turaco (Loerie) are seen daily, hopping agilely through the forest canopies. Tranquility at its best.
See you soon !

If I had know the dirt road to the actual accommodation was so bad I would definitely have cancelled my booking. We had a Thule bike rack with our two bikes on that took a proper hammering - we are in fact still awaiting a part that needs replacing. Then there was also the issue of “eskom” 2 mornings we had no electricity and it was really quite an inconvenience as we were up early to head off to golf both days - and the units are exceptionally dark inside. The road was so bad we didn’t even want to Mtb on the road (potholes and really corrugated). A proper mission for every trip we wanted to do. If you want to get there and never leave for your stay then this place would be for you. The units are neat and clean. My hubs and son found the toilet to be very confined - we were wondering if the owners had ever used the loo to see how awkward it is.
We took up the concerns with the owners who did offer us 3 complimentary nights (but honestly we would never return).

Hi Viv, I again would like to offer my sincere apologies for your bad experience with our roads. As explained to you, we had an abnormal amount of rain in the weeks leading up to the December holiday. We pleaded with the provincial government to grade the road before silly season, but they did not get to us before they closed. I’m sorry to hear that you will not be taking our offer up and I only wish you the best for the future. Kind forest greetings.

The cottages are well kept and lovely to rest I'm after a day of adventure. This accommodation is meant for those who are nature lovers and don't mind roughing it a bit.
For a place that borders the forest it is very well manicured and the staff are very helpful and quick to help you when you need it.
Some areas need a bit more attention but due to the fact that nature is often trying to take over, the place is making good progress with maintaining a relaxing environment.
The website needs to be updated as a few things on site were not quite the same as they are now.
In the end, the place is a lovely place to relax and unwind with a braai, either with family or friends. Delightful stay and happy smiles after our stay.

Hidden little gem, well equipped, neat and just overall enjoyable. Gardens well maintained and up keep of the cottage all so good. Thank you! We enjoyed sitting on the stoep in the sun, listen to the birds and baboons, and the sunset was just so amazing. We found the much needed stillness to nourish our souls and calmed our heads - recharged our inner batteries in this beautiful little cottage so close to the forest and nature. We had good walks to The Drupkelders and to Jubilee Creek waterfall. Reception was on the ball and friendly. Being used to a king size bed, the double bed was rather small and uncomfortable, but the linen and curtains crispy clean and beautiful.

Forest Edge is a must if you love nature. Imagine waking up to the sound of birds chirping in the morning and, going to bed to the sound of a frog choir singing you to sleep. The setting between the mountains in the garden route is beautiful and sunrise and sunset is simply awesome!

Dries and his wife, who manage Forest Edge, also go the extra mile to ensure that their guests have everything they need to enjoy their stay.

My wife and I agree, we will definately visit Forest Edge again!

Why are you NOT pet-friendly?
Answer from Danie J

Forest Edge is a Nature Retreat with an abundance of visiting wild - and bird life. Pets are animals with natural instincts to chase & hunt. We have bunnies, donkeys, buck, loeries, ducks, etc on the retreat and we cannot risk them being harassed by pets, doing what comes naturally to them. We promise Peace, Tranquility and Romance in Nature and we must protect this at all cost.
