Detailed Reviews
Portland Manor was a perfect stop-over for our family on the way through Knysna. Debbie is such a welcoming and understanding host (especially when we arrived late due to our car breaking down) and her breakfasts were one of the highlights of our trip. The rooms are spacious and decorated in a fitting manner for the place - the whole feel the place takes one back a hundred+ years. If you have ever read any of Dalene Matthee's books on the Knysna area you will want to stay here.

A great setting, very good service.
A great countryside hotel. A bit of the old with something new.
Enjoyed the lunchtime entertainment in the dining area.
A simple menu , nice choices, with wholesome food .
A check up on the table after food has been served is recommended as we did have minor concern with 2 of the dishes.

We recently spent a night at Portland Manor, having heard that it had been refurbished and reopened. It didn't disaapoint. The rooms are gorgeous! Light, airy, spacious and prisitinely clean with lovely views through doors that open onto the gardens. The beds and linen are luxurious and with the quiet and tranquility of the countryside, you're gauranteed a great night's sleep. The staff are friendly and welcoming and we enjoyed sitting in the Tea Room where breakfast was served in front of the fire. We spent time there reading and chatting to Tracy who knows a lot about the interesting history of the hotel and the Manor House. During the day you can walk along the marked trails, fish or paddle on the big dam and just generally relax and recharge.
We will visit again and are looking forward to their new restaurant opening next month.

Went there for Sunday lunch. What they served up was a joke. Overcooked beef served up as lamb with three small potato wedges ( cold) vegetables consisting of uncooked curried French beans and cold cauliflower. When we complained they were not interested. Just insisted the meat was lamb. The six people at our table all confirmed that it was beef. Nevertheless we were still charged for the price of lamb (R50) more than beef. No apologies forthcoming.
Lovely setting, such a pity that the food and the staff are so bad

Such a relaxing place. Fantastic food, where the chefs cook your meal on open fires in front of you and even encourage your input! That was an amazing experience. Beautiful property. Stunning nature, a must for anyone who values the outdoors. This place has the potential to become a real diamond in the Garden Route crown! We cannot wait to go back again. It is being developed into a proper working farm again, but with tranquility that is not easy to find these days. The pub is also a real gem. Games room there needs a bit of TLC but I'm sure they will get to that soon because one can see there are lots of changes and improvements happening.

Portland Manor is definitely something to experience. We enjoyed our stay very much. We would however recommend that the bathroom be renovated. The shower door needs to be replaced, fittings fixed and the taps were not working properly. The rest of the room is beautiful and definitely up to standard.

Our stay at Portland Manor was exceptional. I loved everything about it from the minute we arrived and enjoying a welcome port. The staff always went out of their way to help and were so accommodating. We enjoyed all our meals in the Cowshed, lovely variety at breakfast time and delicious farm bread. The grounds are peaceful and quiet. Spacious room and ours had a beautiful view over the garden and pool.

Enjoyed our stay very much event though the weather was not great. Denis and Debbie were gracious hosts and catered to all our needs and comfort. Home cooked food, a roaring fire in a beautiful historic home with great company. What more could one ask for.

The long drive up Rheenendal valley and then 3 km on a dirt road is worth it. Lovely room with old bathrooms, well kept garden and fantastic pool with great views. Be prepared to deal with very unprofessional service but there are quite a few staff around and some are great. A bit of a treasure hunt if there is no running water… But still a place well worth a visit, very special.
