The Thatch House is a beautifully presented oasis of calm just off the Stamford to Hermanus main road which is currently undergoing a major upgrade, Far enough away that you are not disturbed by the roadworks. Lovely suites set in a a large garden leading down to the lagoon. Food is excellent. The chef is very keen to provide you with food you will enjoy. When we expressed an interest in having springbok the chef Dean went out of his way to procure it and then cook it beautifully. Overall a great experience. Our only criticism is that they charged extra for items that other places would have included in the room rate.

What an absolute gem!! One of South Africa's finest for sure.
The suites are magnificent in size, most of them include a 2nd bedroom with 2 beds and a fireplace in the spare room.
The bathrooms are big enough to move into with a walk in closet area and space to leave your luggage so you don't clutter the room.
Each suite has a kitchenette equipped with all that you need for dining in the room if you prefer.

We stayed in the Lagoon suite and loved it. The view from the bath is gorgeous with a door that can open onto the balcony bringing the outside in.

The balcony expands across the entire suite which gives you an apartment feel and protects you if the weather is bad. We were there in a storm and loved sitting on the balcony watching the weather come in. I couldn't get enough of the views, I caught myself looking out of the windows with every move.

The 2 x fireplaces in the main lounge area were gorgeous and a welcome treat to come down to early in the morning, both were well lit and tended to for the duration of our stay from early in the morning to late at night.

The staff are absolutely attentive and made sure everything we needed and even adjusted their offering at the time that the new levels were announced before we even knew so they are particularly on it.

The rolling lawns down to the lagoon are perfect for a picnic. The tennis court and putting green are such fun and the gym is a great added touch.

We are so impressed we have booked our next trip and wish we could have stayed longer.

Thank you to the amazing team that looked after us and accommodated our group at every turn.

Rooms are enormous, perfect for families. Can’t rate this place highly enough, we were travelling as a Group of x3 families all with two young boys circa 3 & 5 yrs and the Hotel was amazingly accommodating. With many things to occupy themselves with a playroom, mini golf, playground etc. The rooms were so close we felt comfortable and safe to leave the children asleep whilst the grownups had dinner. It was just ideal.

The venue, beyond spectacular.

The staff were incredible, accommodating, kind, considerate, helpful, supportive, just amazing.

The location romantic beyond sublime.

The food, we expected and do expect SO much more, local specialized farms from around the area has an array of superb produce, we have been to Stanford markets often, wonderful local and fresh produce available aplenty. Stanford is probably 15 km away and I’m sure the farms, growers and producers would be so keen to deliver. A beautiful venue in a heavenly setting should offer simple uncomplicated food. Real honest food, the product fresh, and the star of the meal.
Home baked bread !! Why not ?
Local food flavors, I believe you can Thatchouse !! Grapes from the vine, I don’t want Woolies seedless grapes. Apples that are in season now, from the orchard. I’m coming back and would love to see that.
The decor left us sad, we desperately hoped to experience something timeless, stylish, welcoming, warm in mood, ambience and execution. What we found were over cluttered surfaces, harsh contrast with the beauty outside and that of the architecture. Unfriendly decor to say the least. Unbecoming of the beautiful venue. Artificial flowers, leaves at the reception desk, and very odd looking art everywhere.
The room one of us stayed in had a bed so low she could hardly get up out of bed, some sort of a loose cover on the sides of the bed that would eventually become so untidy and most concerning., unhygienic. More than evidently a lot of cash was spent on making the place look the way it does, however personally we all felt the decorations is completely out of sync with the venue and location. Not a single nod to the beautiful body of water right in your eyes, the majestic mountains all around the hotel and the incredible flora. Hermanus has one of the highest plant diversity levels in the world. Instead harsh geometric wall papers some in gold and black !!
Come on peeps. Let’s do this, we believe you can.

We had a midweek break at the Thatch House and would've happily extended it if we could.

We stayed in the Flamingo suite which is just lovely. Beautifully furnished and decorated with a very comfortable 4 poster bed. Gorgeous French doors open onto a veranda which overlooks rolling lawn to the lagoon.

The suite includes a 2nd bedroom with 2 single beds and a fireplace. The bathroom is large with a nice bath (perfect for chilly winter evenings) an excellent shower and lovely dressing room.

Amenities include a well stacked mini bar and snacks (all reasonably priced) and a selection of teas and coffees.
There was a much appreciated turndown service which was discretely done during dinner.

Speaking about which - we had dinner and breakfasts at the hotel and it was excellent. There was a decent choice of starts, mains and dessert (quite surprising as we were the only guests) and absolutely delicious.

My favourite bit has to be the staff. Ruan, Kim and the team made us feel instantly welcome and were great hosts throughout our stay. (thank you so much guys!)

Location: Stunning - nestled between the mountain and ocean. A 15 minute drive into Hermanus.

Would we go again? In a heartbeat :)

We stayed here over Christmas and it could not have been more wonderful. We were 3 families each with 2 children aged 4-6 and the hotel was a perfect base for us. The staff went out of their way to meet our every needs including making special meals for picky kids and feeding our kids early so we could pur them to bed and enjoy an adult dinner. The hotel felt so safe and home-like that we didn’t worry about the kids sleeping on their own or running to each other’s rooms by themselves. Additionally the rooms were HUGE (much bigger than our first London flat!) with plenty of room for a family of 4. TVs came equipped with Netflix, Amazon prime etc to keep kids entertained in the early mornings before adults were functioning and the pools, tennis court, game room and playground were unreal. The hotel provided footballs, golf clubs, tennis racquets and anything else you might need. For the adults, food and wine was delicious and wi-fi access not a problem. We would return to this hotel in a heartbeat, really a very special place!

The Thatch House is a premium offering, and so our expectations were high. We were not disappointed. A sublime setting overlooking the lagoon brought a pervading sense of peace and relaxation. Our Pincushion Suite was enormous and well appointed.Soft fluffy towels, lashings of hot water and wonderfully comfortable bed and pillows. Meals were uniformly excellent, with breakfast eggs and bacon done to perfection. The warm but unobtrusive attention from Kim, Mecaela and Ivan was faultless.
No place is absolutely perfect, so after casting around desperately, the only flaw I could come up with is an observation: the rooms provide a little basket of goodies - a bar of chocolate, packet of crisps etc. While it is completely normal to charge for drinks from the bar fridge, at the premium price of the accommodation it might be a welcome gesture to include the items in the basket and not charge extra for each of them.
I would certainly return and maybe spend a bit longer here

I've had the good fortune to travel widely with my firm for over 20 years and I can honestly say this little piece of paradise is as good as you're going to find anywhere in the world. I genuinely think Kim Pienaar and her staff can compete on the global stage when it comes to location, decor, service, food and wine. Often as South Africans we feel we trail our European counterparts when it comes to service and hospitality but trust me on this, a stay at The Thatch House will change this perception. HIGHLY recommend this. Lets support local because this little gem is very well deserving.

The Thatch house is such an incredible place so if you have the opportunity to stay here, do not pass it up!
We visited as a family of 4 (children aged 2 and 5 years) over Easter for 3 nights. The staff cannot do enough for guests and the rooms are just incredible, so spacious and luxurious. It feels very intimate because there are not many rooms and the staff know everyone straight away. The dining, housekeeping and reception staff were really helpful, nothing was too much trouble. They even did an Easter egg hunt for the kids on Easter Sunday, which was so lovely.
The Thatch House is unique, luxurious and very family friendly at the same time which is hard to come by. We really hope to be back in future!

We stayed as a family of 4 for 2 nights and we were blown away by this amazing Hotel. The room was very generous in size, with a big bathroom ( incl underfloor heating) , dressing room, bath and shower...a separate lobby/kitchenette area and a stunning living /bedroom space.
Everything is to the highest standard, tastefully decorated
Lovely views over the lagoon
The service from the entire team was personal and attentive.
Dinner around the fireplace was just the perfect thing to end a relaxing quiet day day.
I can highly recommend the hotel and it's team.
We also liked the location being between Hermanus and Stanford so we could easily explore both.

Is it possible to swim in the lagoon?
Answer from Trevor J
Cape Town, South Africa3 contributions1 helpful vote
Is it possible to swim in the lagoon. There are no dangerous creatures in the water. The water, which has its source in the mountain overlooking the lagoon, is brackish (brown in colour) and that is sometimes off putting for bathers. The lagoon also opens to the ocean (when the lagoon water level rises and the lagoon breaks through the beach at Grotto beach). This causes the fresh water from the mountain spring to mix with the salt water of the ocean, making the lagoon water slightly salty. There is also some weeds along the banks to be aware of. Also, be aware of motor boats on the lagoon. The temperature of the lagoon water is warm, compared to the ocean.
