Nestled atop a cliff, Abalone Guest Lodge enjoys a sterling reputation for its cleanliness, with spotless rooms and impeccable bathrooms, although a few guests suggest the pool area could benefit from extra attention. The lodge's location is a hit amongst travelers, offering breathtaking views and convenient access to both attractions and scenic walks. Visitors are charmed by the exceptional service, where staff endeavors to provide a personalized touch.
The amenities, which include diverse dining choices and a welcoming pool, contribute to the overall value, making for a luxurious yet affordable escape. While the rooms are celebrated for their comfort and vistas, light sleepers might prefer a room away from the reception to avoid noise.

Detailed Reviews
We were treated like royalty at Abalone Guest Lodge from start to finish! The view from our room was stunning and the property sits right on a lovely hiking trail on cliffs overlooking the bay. The restaurant was great and we were treated to a full breakfast buffet and wonderful dinners, even though the hotel was well under capacity due to the pandemic. Staff were very careful about hygiene protocols, and my husband and I felt that our health was taken seriously and protected during our visit. So much to do in the area, starting with whale watching, but also shopping, restaurants and hiking. We took a day trip to Betty's Bay to see penguins and had a lovely time. This was a really lovely retreat from the stress of city life. I highly, highly recommend Abalone!

Abalone Lodge is a fantastic little guest house with unspoilt views of Walker Bay. Check in was fantastic and efficient. Rooms are of good size and well appointed. The swimming pool was freezing but refreshing because of the harsh weekend sun.
My only 2 gripes... Breakfast service was a shambles tbh. They had 3 people who had to cook and serve all the food. Most times there were no glasses for the juice (both days), on one day I had to place our order with the kitchen lady directly as the manager, who is one of the assistants, had to go check-out a guest. My second issue is the electricity supply. While the SA government is struggling to keep the ligjts on, i feel the guest house should install a generator. For the price you pay (just under €500 per night), South Africa's electricity woes should not be your guests problem. You charge a MASSIVE premium compared to other guest houses in the area, you should be able to "shed some light" on the premium.

Dear Andre We value your feedback. We are in the process of installing a generator as well as solar panels. At the moment, it is a bit difficult for us running a full occupancy. Great to hear that you enjoyed your view of the Walker Bay. Thank you for bringing the issues about breakfast to our attention – we will be sure to fix these immediately. We loved Hermanus, and it's laid back vibe, and Abalone Guest Lodge was a delightful place to stay. Our room had a lovely airy feel and a wonderful view and we loved the elegantly rustic seaside decor. Staff were polite, friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was very good. Our only criticism is that seating and sunbeds in the pool area, sheltered from the wind, are very limited.
There is easy access to the lovely walks on the cliff path and from there to the beach straight out of the back gate. Highly recommended.

My husband and I recently stayed at Abalone Guest Lodge (February 2020) for two nights during our honeymoon. The staff could not have been nicer, friendlier or more accommodating. They were fantastic. We had a lovely dinner one evening and enjoyed breakfast another morning. Both meals were very good. One morning, the staff knew we would miss breakfast due to an excursion so they packed us two to-go breakfasts (which was over-filled with food and snacks)! I’m addition, knowing it was our honeymoon, the staff treated us to surprise bubbles, chocolates and candles in our room. The hotel is clean and quaint. The ambiance is chic and airy. We enjoyed a day relaxing at the pool. The downtown/town area is just a ~30/40 minute walk, but along the path with amazing views. Don’t forget to check out the spa services! We enjoyed massages, which were relaxing. Great service. Overall it was a wonderful experience.

Abalone Guest House is about half an hour's walk from the town along the beautiful coastal path. The views from the Guest House are spectacular and it is ideally situated for anyone who enjoys coastal walks and is a short drive in to town for dinner in the evening. Abalone staff can order taxis at any time of day. All the staff were efficient and friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. Breakfasts were very good. If you wish to stay in in the evening dinner can be provided, but Hermanus has a wealth of very good restaurants which the Guest House can recommend and book for you. We would not hesitate to return or to recommend this Guest House to others.

We spent 3 amazing nights at the Abalone Guest Lodge. We had an Ocean View Suite which had a balcony and beautiful sea views.
The guesthouse is modern and tastefully decorated and has all the amenities which one requires.
It was an absolute pleasure to have underfloor heating and heated towel rails as the weather was quite cold at night.
The guest house is close to the golf course and set overlooking the sea and cliff path. It is a beautiful walk along the coastline.
Ansley was a fabulous host and catered to our every need. Our breakfasts were fabulous and he couldn't have been more obliging and helpful any more than he was.
I highly recommend this establishment.

Stayed for 2 nights on a SA tour. Good accommodation with friendly helpful staff. The hotel is in a great location close to the coastal path where we saw whales breaching several times. The path enables a steady walk into town where there are numerous places to eat and drink.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Abalone. The house managers went over and above to ensure we had a top experience at Abalone, especially during Covid restrictions when getting around and curfews made things difficult. Gorgeous sea views. Thank you for such a wonderful stay in Hermanus!

Second stop of our honeymoon and could not wish for better!
A bit further out of Hermanus town centre, this stunning accommodation with amazing views of the bay, allowing its guests to whale watch from the room or the dining area.
It’s located on the coastal walk, which is absolutely breathtaking and worth doing of you have time.
The staff was lovely, helpful and very kind to us. They learned it was our honeymoon and organised a little treat for us. Breakfast is just what we wanted; a buffet (simple but with everything we expected) and you can also request some hot breakfast being cooked for you.
Certainly worth considering if you are planning to stay in the area!

We have just enjoyed a three night stay as a family of four ( two teenagers) and had a wonderful time. The location is stunning - amazing views from the breakfast room and balcony and direct access to the costal path for the most wonderful walks and whale spotting. Ansley and his team run a slick operation and could have not been more helpful organising taxis, excursions, late check outs and restaurant bookings. The guest house is top notch, spotlessly clean and a beautiful place to stay. Thank you - we will be back!
