Our family of five took two rooms in the Mountain View section and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The owners/staff couldn't have been more helpful, suggesting local attractions, providing cheese knives and wine glasses when we went on a river boat trip (they made the reservations for us as well), and even packing up a to-go breakfast for our early morning departure. The rooms are very generous in size and open up to a view of the vineyard and mountain. We relaxed by the pool with the resident dogs (a real favorite for my young adult children), played a bit of tennis, and relaxed over board games in one of the several common spaces. The restaurant provided a very broad breakfast selection, and we enjoyed dinner one of our evenings there. They accommodated an upset tummy with a much more basic version of the fine meal for the rest of our party. The location permitted exploration of the nearby towns of Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai, and is situated very close to Panthera Big Cat Sanctuary.

We spent a weekend with three other families and booked the Mountain view cottages. The manager (Roetter) made an additional room available free of charge for the older children to stay together which was very thoughtful. The dinners were delicious and the kids were spoilt. The service staff are very friendly and efficient.
The venue has great walking and mountain bike trails and the manager will provide detailed route planning depending on your preference. There is a tennis court which kept us busy for most of the day.
There's a reason we have now been five years in a row as a group.

Blue Gum Country Estate is by far the best family (including dog) accommodation and experience we have had in the Sandford area. It's nestled in nature, peace and tranquility with every amenity you could wish for. The staff are friendly and helpful. A play ground, and pool for summer, tennis courts, little library for story reading and more. The restaurant provides delicious food, some of which we were even able to enjoy delivered ready made to our cottage! There are beautiful fynbos walks and starry skies. The estate is geared for family, so while you have every comfort, the lodgings and furnishings are robust, ready for kids and dogs etc, which is amazing because you can relax and enjoy and not feel you need to apologize because your little ones used every towel in the house making a bed for their fluffy toys! If you are uncomfortable with a farm stay (brown water from the taps) or getting your car, kids and dog muddy and being patient with some of the insignificant quirks of what comes with that - then this is not for you.

This was such a disappointing stay. We had a lovely room but we experienced no service whatsoever. It was as if management didn't remember that our room was occupied.

We stayed at this property for 3 days. Housekeeping did not appear even once which is rather bizarre for a property of this kind. We did not have a self-catering unit and the website clearly states daily housekeeping. The water is borehole and the bottle of drinking water was never replenished. There was no soap to wash your hands at the basin. It just felt like there was no pride here. And it is such a pretty setting. The rooms are sweet and the beds ok. The breakfast was average but it came with a smile. The pool area is unkempt and rather shabby. Again, go find someone to ask for swimming towels if you want them.

We had to text message if we wanted something which made us feel like we were difficult guests if we had a simple request. It is much better if the staff are attentive enough to anticipate reasonable needs like water and towels.

With so many places to stay in this lovely part of the Western Cape, I suggest that Blue Gum up its game.

Response from Anton De Kock, Owner at Blue Gum Country Estate
Responded 10 Jul 2022
Hi there Thanks for the review and my apologies that you had a disappointing stay and that your expectations weren't met. Blue Gum is my family home and has been for the last 12 years (my father in law has owned it for 25), but during COVId we rented the property out to a hospitality company, in order to take a break from the non-stop environment of meeting people's expectations every day. When this company wasn't able to sustain the business and pay the rent we returned and tried to simplify Blue Gum, making it self-catering - thus I see your expectations when you joined us were different to what we now offer. I was the one that received your text messages and saw to your needs as soon as you let them be known. When someone needs something there are only really 2 ways these can be communicated - either by a message or face to face. I do have staff at my reception (but once again a skeleton staff whilst we try and rebuild a broken business) to assist if anything is required and nothing is too difficult for them to facilitate - soap/water/towels etc. - but in our room information it is made very clear that the rooms are not serviced unless by request. We do this in order to keep our rates lower and to satisfy the South African market that are struggling with cost of living. What I do find a bit unfair about the review is the fact that none of this was communicated whilst you were staying here. Even more so, that our mutual friends were also staying here. So to write such a harsh review without context or even a discussion seems a little disingenuous - as one can tell by the 400 reviews prior I go to extreme lengths to make sure every guest has a great stay. It is my home after all - and I love it - and I care for it, with the help of my staff and family as best I can given the myriad of circumstances. It is much better to seem like difficult guests so we can meet your expectations than drag a business' name through the mud because of this. To clarify a few points - our water is fresh and clean mountain water that goes through a vigorous filtration process - but has a rooibos tea colour. The extra towels you requested were due to you spilling something on the floor... I take a great deal of pride in Blue Gum - it is my home, my business and very much a work in progress that will never be completed. And I very much appreciate honest and constructive feedback whenever it is offered.

We had booked a mountain view cottage via Agoda for the long weekend only to discover that the venue had terminated/changed their arrangement with Agoda and that the booking wasn't valid. They were however aware of our booking and recognized my husband's name and was clearly aware that there was a family who would be arriving without a booking . The manager claimed that Agoda does not make personal info available and that he could not contact us. The manager of the property offered us a substandard room that appeared to require a refurbishment and that was much smaller than the cottage we had booked, with a broken door that he was trying to fix and refused to offer us any discount and stated that he would not be able to accommodate us in the restaurant even if we decided to stay. What was most distasteful was the fact that he referred to me as "young lady" while I'm professional woman in my 40s and kept asking whether we are champagne drinkers, indicating that a bottle of sparkling wine was the only compensation he was willing to offer after we had driven 2.5 hours from Cape Town. I'm not sure where the owner was but I believe he should have dealt with us instead of his manager.

We popped in to Blue Gum today and sat on one of their verandas having some delicious nibbles, some bubbly and just totally relaxed in this beautiful, peaceful environment. They serve lovely home cooked meals and have a great local wine selection. Bina’s bookshop is well stocked with some great books, there is a Lego shop, and previously loved kiddies clothes/bric & brac.
The overall experience was peaceful, comfortable and welcoming. We’ll definitely visit again soon.

I am in the customer service industry and as a result probably a little over critical of customer service but this place was faultless. The service is impeccable, we were made to feel so special every day. We stayed three nights over our wedding nearby and it was a real treat. We will never forget how wonderful it was- thank you to all the staff there for making it so amazing :)

My family and i had an amazing stay, the food was good the service better , only to be surpassed by the scenery and stunning sun sets/rises. This place caters for and allows for complete relaxation, as we could sit on our enclosed balcony and listen to various bird species ( and we could even see some springboks grazing in the field). The location also lends itself as platform to visit nearby towns that will take you from a river cruise to shark cage diving.

A friend recommended the restaurant at Blue Gum Estate to us. A group of 8 of us arrived with no reservations but the staff happily accommodated us. The outdoor patio seating is perfect with a huge playground for our kids. The food was delicious. If you are in the area go for a meal. We checked out the facilities while we were there and when we are next in the area their lodging is top on our list.

General comment:- The venue suited our requirements with 7 pax having a 52 year, social reunion.
Breakfast was standard fare and adequate. Access and exiting Blue Gum CE was very difficult at this time following recent severe flooding.
Some maintenance upkeep required on some doors and window handles and latches.
All pax including guests from overseas were very comfortable and satisfied with the accommodation provided.
