We went to the Marine on 26th April 2022 for a high tea. The photo on their website and what we have experienced totally two different stories. The tea wasn't even warm, the savory platter (yes, no tier) ONE WORD... NOT worthy to be mentioned. The R245 pp was definitely not even close to value for money.
We booked this hotel at the last minute as we did not like the location of the one Trailfinders had booked for us as part of a four-centre tour of the Western Cape. The general manager, Melissa, was on duty when we checked in and gave us a wonderfully warm welcome. When our room was ready, we found that she'd upgraded us and left champagne, fresh flowers plus a handwritten card to celebrate our Silver Wedding. We were thrilled. We had a wonderful room with a huge bathroom and sea view - it was perfection. Breakfast was amazing - fabulous array of cereals, fruits and pastries, and freshly cooked choices too. The service was exemplary. We weren't in Hermanus for whale season, unfortunately, so there wasn't much to do in the resort apart from breathtaking walks along the cliffs, but the Marine made the two-night stay here more than worth it.…
There are some great things about this hotel, although I suspect that Hermanus is not really my ideal holiday location; all a bit too quiet. This is definitely an old-school hotel that has been tarted up. Our room was in excellent decorative order. It was also huge, well-furnished and had an excellent range of amenities. The bar area was also well thought-out, tastefully furnished, comfortable and came with a very pleasant and capable barman. The dining room on the other hand is awful; a large, soulless expanse that I suspect someone thought was quite trendy. The breakfast was excellent, with a good range of fresh things on the buffet and hot breakfasts cooked to order. The only exception was the coffee, which was rather weak and bitter. The serving staff were delightful. But I, for one, don't want to listen to cover versions of 1980s hits at breakfast - beyond awful. Is there anything wrong with silence? However, there were no wretched chits to sign at the end of breakfast, which is a good thing. We had dinner in the hotel one night. It's nothing special and not somewhere to which I would return. There was little love in the cookery. Our large bathroom was full of everything you'd need and I appreciated the soap ledge at chest height in the shower. However, it's the wrong design for the little tubes of shampoo etc., which just fall down the back of it. The multi-plug thing that was supposed to be able to fit our European plugs didn't work but reception soon found us an adaptor to use for the duration of our stay. And I have to say that the reception staff were fabulously efficient, helpful and kind. Housekeeping, portering and the supervision of the car park were also excellent.…
Stayed 2 nights and really enjoyed it- small glitch with reservation but quickly resolved on arrival. Bar great as was breakfast - didnt eat here in evenings as big choice in town, but seemed popular. Not modern but well maintained and classy place in a lovely little town- well located on the coastal path and 5 mins to bars and restaurants.
We were in Hermanus for a wedding and spoilt ourselves with a two-night stay at the Marine. The situation, the view, the room and the food (eggs benedict highly recommended) were all top-class, but the most special of all were the staff, each and every one of whom made us feel warmly welcomed. A very much enjoyed treat for both the Capetonian and the visitor from London!
