This is a centuries old hotel on a beautiful rocky outcrop in Hermanus that was reopened last year after a complete rebuild as an all apartment hotel.
It is stunning, we had a one bedroom sea view room, spotlessly clean, tons of stuff so you can properly cook for yourself and enjoy the view in style.
The staff were wonderful also, very friendly helpful and there for you.
I’d give this place six stars if I could however the only couple of niggles were that the swimming pool area isn’t ideal if you want a relaxing dip as there were a lot of kids playing and many of the apartments back onto the little courtyard. Also the bedroom was a little “cosy” with a bathroom right next to it through a cupboard (but like Narnia)
That aside it’s a great place, we will be back next year but stay in the penthouse

We booked 4 nights here as part of our Garden Route tour.
We wanted to be based in Hermanus to see the Whales, and to hopefully see them from our accommodation.
Our apartment was great with living area, kitchen with bar seating and two bedrooms with a small double in one and king size in the other and bathroom. We had daily house keeping and liked the Nespresso machine (which came with pods) and she dishwasher tablet/washing liquid. There is also secure underground parking and 24/7 reception staff/security which we found reassuring.
We also had a patio area which was the highlight for us as my fiancé spent her days sitting watching the whale with a cup of coffee. The view was unrestricted and although there is a quiet road in front of the property there’s nothing else! This meant we could sit and watch the whales in the bay (there was a mum and calf) and then further out you could see the whale blow holes and whales lob-tailing. We were really lucky on one day a pod of around 200 dolphins came through the bay, we sat watching this from our patio and couldn’t believe what we were seeing.
I’d highly recommend the property, and especially if you are staying in the area with the goal of seeing the whales, there’s a high chance you’ll see them from your room.
We had a couple of down sides, firstly there isn’t a lot of privacy without having the curtains closed as our room was by the walk way, I know this isn’t the case for all rooms, but it made our apartment very dark and finally our room said it came with a washing machine which it didn’t (with this the staff were brilliant and acknowledged the error and kindly took our washing to do at no charge).
We found the property exceeded our expectations and staff were friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. They were also able to recommend some great local restaurants and a whale watching company (do try and book before arriving as we had to go on a wait list).
We look forward to coming back to stay :)

We had the three bed penthouse and were not disappointed. It’s spotlessly clean the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Thank you for a wonderful stay over the weekend. Everything far exceeded our expectation. It’s always the small things that count and The Esplanade has paid meticulous attention to those small things. Justpure, such luxurious toiletries in the bathrooms, the soft warm Volpes blankets, the plush bedding…The apartments are so tasteful and spotlessly clean. The team was so welcoming, waiting for us upon arrival, showing us where to park, carrying our bags, giving us some history at reception. 100/10 🌟🌟🌟All full of warmth and genuine helpfulness. This is a serviced block of apartments and your quality of stay will depend on size of and location of the unit you have. We were a group of 6, 4 shared a two bed unit which floor size was the same as the one bed unit us oldies had. Our unit was clean and well appointed, although there was a problem with the washing machine. Corridors around the apartments can be a little noisy , but quiet at night. Location is excellent, free secure underground parking and very good service from on site staff. would I stay again? - yes

Upon arrival, the reception is friendly and efficient. The property is clean and well maintained, both inside and out. We were surprised when the appartement was serviced everyday, not something one expects these days.. We rented two apartments to accommodate 8 people. Both sea facing and both very spacious and well equipped. The larger unit even had a washing machine. We have been there twice since it opened and will not go anywhere else in future.

Great hotel, very luxurious. Amazing, helpful and friendly staff. Very clean hotel room and housekeeping cleaned it every day. The hotel is in a great location as all restaurants, art galleries, grocery stores and beach were within 1km radius. Great place to relax and have peace and quiet. Wow!!! The view from our apartment was fabulous .. right on the ocean front. We sat on the terrace at every opportunity looking out for whales . And what an apartment? .. oh my goodness .. it was beautiful.. tastefully decorated, lovely furnishings and easily the best equipped self catering apartment we’ve EVER stayed in. Plenty of room too for the 4 of us with the two en-suites a bonus. The free underground parking on site was unexpected and very handy.
All the staff without exception were very attentive .. they made us feel genuinely welcome.
Directions to the apartment, pre arrival, welcome and check out texts were a lovely touch .. very informative and exactly what was needed..
