Found a used Q-tip on horrible carpet in lounge! House in need of paint outside, garden in need of upkeep. House not welcoming. Parking atrocious....narrow gate and pathway. If house and garden is updated can be a good place to stay. It's as if everything is just not right!

Rooms are great! Clean, comfortable and deffinately better than some of the more expensive options around Hermanus. There was a good kitchen available for all our self catering needs with a braai area, kiddies splash pool, nice lounge and DSTV and more. It is also very safe, kids pool is locked so the todlers don't fall in, security gates around the premisis as well. Oh an management will help you book your trips and activities.

Staff: Friendly and helpfull.

Location: 5 min walk from the sea! Awesome. Inbetween the new and old harbour, which basicaly makes everything walking distance expt for the swimming beach, but no matter where you stay your most likely going to have to drive to the swimming beach anyways.

Nearby Shops: Pic n Pay, Surf Shop, Garage, + lots more

Nearby Restaurants/Bars/Fast food: Annie Se Kombuis (awesome!!); Spur, KFC, Steers, Gecko Bar, Savanah + many more

Definitely recomend it.

Stayed at this place for two nights during my south Africa visit, sweet lovely place close to the hermanus city centre and the coast beach. The self catering cottages has absolutely everything thats required, only drawback is the entry to the hotel, limited space for parking if you are driving a self driven car. Overall great experience. Highly recommended for stat if you visiting hermanus, South Africa 🇿🇦. Cheers 🍻

My boyfriend, friends and I had the most shocking stay at Whale Coast Guesthouse. So many things went wrong that I've tried to break this review up to make it a bit more reader-friendly:

1. Originally, my boyfriend and I had booked for the 26th of December but emailed the guesthouse to move our stay a day early. I called to confirm on the way to Hermanus and was told that they had no record of our booking (I had the emails to prove it). They made a plan and gave us a different room for the night.

2. There were fleas or bedbugs in the bed, my boyfriend was bitten throughout the night (definitely not by mosquitos!) and, when we complained, were told that it couldn't have been bedbugs because all the bedding was new… But there were stains on the duvet covers and pillow cases so how could this be true?

3. When we were moved to the new room, both my boyfriend and I stood on a row of nails that were sticking up from the skirting on the floor outside the loo. Brilliant.

4. When my boyfriend tried to run the bath, the tap fell off and water gushed out of the faucet.

5. On top of all that, we were in a big 4x4 and were a bit worried about fitting into the small parking lot that was provided. We raised this issue with the manager/receptionist who assured us it would be fine. On our way back from dinner, we opened the gate to find the other cars parked in such a way that we could not get in. So we called the receptionist/manager because we didn't know what to do. She assured us that someone would come assist. They did not. We were stuck outside for 45 minutes when we eventually had to squeeze the car in very awkwardly and with much difficulty. We would never have been able to manoeuvre out of there if the other cars had not moved in the morning.

6. On the 30th, two other couples joined us. In the first room, the toilet didn't flush and had to be replaced (don't they check these things before guests arrive!?).

7. In the second room, there was no extractor fan or window in the bathroom so when my friends showered, the whole room steamed up and made it unbearable to be in. The room was also damp. They landed up using our shower only to find that their towels had been removed from their room. They had to phone the receptionist/manager who arranged for them to be brought back.

8. Those same friends had the worst night's sleep thanks to the LED lights that hung outside – they shone in their faces through the curtains. Honestly, we would all have preferred to stay at backpackers... Of course, we notified the receptionist/manager of all the issues. On the day we arrived, she gave us her personal cell number in case we needed to contact her. Most of the issues were sorted out (our sheets were changed and our room sprayed for bugs, nails were removed, our friends were given a fan to compensate for their extremely hot room and lack of extractor fan) so we didn't pack up and leave even though we weren't happy.

9. We were told we could make use of the braai facilities and use their plates and cutlery, so on New Year's Eve, we had a braai. On previous occasions, when we'd used plates etc., the cleaning staff washed everything up, so we figured that's how things worked there. Admittedly, we left a bit of a mess in the kitchen – nothing atrocious, nothing was trashed, things were just untidy and we used a lot of plates and cutlery but we did put all the dishes in the sink and went to bed. The next morning, we went out for breakfast and got an angry call from manager/receptionist, saying that we needed to check out immediately because we had trashed the place and disrespected her by leaving a mess and by calling her on her cell so much (why did she give us her number then?). We got back to our rooms and tried to reason with her but we were more than happy to get out of there. In the end, the manager/receptionist told two of our friends (who had spent New Year's Eve with us) that they could stay because they hadn't complained or caused commotion, which means that we were not getting kicked out because of the mess we left but because we complained about the shoddy accommodation. We asked for the owner/manager's details on more than one occasion so that we could complain to the right person but were told that they were not allowed to give his number out. The manager/receptionist told us we needed to complain to him and not her (how could we with no contact number?) but wouldn't give us his details. Then, as we were leaving, she told us that she was the person we needed to complain to.

All in all, Whale Coast Guesthouse is the worst accommodation I have ever stayed in. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Shocking service, disastrous experience!
I would rather sleep in my car than visit this dreadful place again.

Checked in to Whale Coast lodge with friends based on pictures we looked at online and what do you know, we were relocated to a noisy excuse of a room on the main road on a fairly new premises they are using.

Seems like false advertising to me especially paying over R900 per night.

OK, maybe I can live with staying on a noisy road but could not live with the following:

Damp/ Mouldy room without ventilation

Extractor fan not working in the bathroom and the staff "not knowing about it" - dont you run a hospitality business? We were however eventually provided with a fan (None of the rooms have aircon)

Subsequently extractor fan not being replaced as they "couldnt get parts" - you should surely check your "guess rooms" before people arrive?

Towels being removed from our room and not replaced until calling the staff cell phone number.

Bright LED lights outside our room which we asked the staff to turn off so we could sleep with the window open and without lights glaring in our eyes- Guess what, they said nothing could be done because of the time-switch.

Staff were not around when we needed assistance so we called the main Whale Coast Lodge premises who redirected us to the cellphones of the 2 ladies running this so called guest house.

After 2 poor nights of sleep, we were told that we should leave because we had a braai with friends and did not wash the plates. Our friends had previously had braais before we arrived and while we didnt wash up we assumed the cleaning staff would be in the next morning. Is this a reason to be asked to leave?

Whilst a friend of mine was arguing with the staff we lady we spoke with said things such as "You dont appreciate the little things" and "Do you know that rich people have stayed here" as well as "How can you contact us when we arent on duty"
(We were repeatedly told to contact this lady with any problems we may have had when we called the main line for Whale Coast)

I was ecstatic to receive one nights refund and to be able to check in to a proper hotel rather than have to endure another uncomfortable night here.

I have NEVER heard so much rubbish from any form of hospitable establishment in my life as I did from this one.

We were told that we were not allowed to speak with the owner even though the staff told us that they cannot do anything without the owners consent and that the owner needed to be consulted for almost every reasonable complaint we made.

If you do end up staying here, I wouldn't spend a cent until checking in and seeing the actual room. The large tv with dstv couldnt make up for our horrendous experience.

I cannot believe anyone would pay to stay here if they knew what this place was really like.

Big Thumbs down, you would be way better off checking into surrounding hotels near the beach front.

Travelled to hermanus with my wife and 1 year old daughter. Arrived at 8.30pm and the property already closed. Called the receptionist said we cannot check in because we are 30 minutes late! Didnt even bother to help us. Need to find a new place to check in and luckily Hermanus Backpackers is available. Terrible!

A very nice self catering lodge with a well equipped kitchen (including a coffee machine).
The perfect place for large families.
Huge cottages, comfortable beds and amazing shower.
Few min to the city center where you can get a very good breakfast watching whales.

What happened was, we told them we would be arriving between 8-10 pm. Their check in time ends at 8pm but on their booking forms they say if you will arrive after 8pm make arrangements, which we did on the booking form, after paying the deposit. My friend called them and told them again that we would arrive between 8-10pm. They said no problem we will leave the key for you if 9pm hits and you are not here. While doing pickups for all the people coming on the trip between 6pm and 8pm we start getting calls from a lady(whose name I think is Carol) who says she is the owner of the lodge enquiring on where we are as check in closes at 8pm. We tell her we are about to leave but also remind her of the arrangements that have been made. She tells us she knows nothing about these arrangements and tells us she is cross with us. She then says if we arrive a minute after ten we will not find her at the premises. (I must mention making this trip happen was such drama, from people pulling out to car troubles)

Anyhow, we leave Cape Town past 8pm. Trying to chase the time to get there before 10 pm. She continues to call and we tell her we are doing our best to get there on time. At about 9:50 pm we are just getting off the n2 into the road that leads to Hermanus, she calls and says she is leaving and we will not find her at the premises.

Long story short we arrive at the premises at 10:30 pm

We try to call her and her phone is off. We try again, we send an sms, no response. So we reconcile ourselves to the fact that we are in Hermanus, Friday night with no place to sleep. Mind you we have paid for this accommodation. So we circle around town and try and find a place to sleep. We call about five six places, go to hotels and backpackers, I must mention, there is someone who is 7 months pregnant in this car.

We were so confused about what to do

We would go to the garage then go back to the premises eventually we stuck to the garage and watched night owls get pies.

We parked there until 4:45 am the next morning. We then decided to go back to the lodge and parked outside so we could try check in in the morning because we were so tired.

At about 5am, this lady comes out of the house (where she had said she was not staying and would have left at 9:50 pm previous night) and asks us to leave and tells us she has called the police. She tells us she has cancelled our booking and will be refunding us the 50% deposit amount. She tells us our booking has been given to other people. At that time she has some security guy also there to enforce our removal.

( What is to upsetting to me is that the whole time we were calling the previous night, this lady was on the premises but chose to ignore us, points up for hospitality).

So we do not fight, i mean we are tired, we have been sleeping in the car at the Shell garage.

We make our way to leave, we go to another garage (I think Engine), pour fuel to make our way back to Cape Town. After which the lady calls and tells us to come back to check in. I do not know what changed her mind and how quickly the people who had received the booking would vacate the premises. However we went back. We even paid the full amount to her for the Friday we slept outside and the Saturday which we slept there. The booking by the way had not been given away. She did not apologize. I must tell you when she was chasing us away the first time she told us to come another weekend. Laughable. At checkout there was no apology from her. She just said we should come again, like nothing had happened.

I will not recommend the abovementioned accommodation to family and friends. Firstly, the host and hostess are unfriendly upon arrival. They surely do not know about greeting. They also need to amend their signs.
Secondly, I don't believe that the cleaning staff should share the fridge with visitors.
Thirdly the host should check that the rooms have been cleaned properly. We had to ask for toilet paper.
Lastly why have only 1 fridge in a shared kitchen. Insufficient space.

I made a booking in February 2015 for a 2 night stay in December and paid a deposit of R500.00
I took very ill in October with heart failure and we called and cancelled the booking as per the original signed agreement. We were promised that as we had given more than 3 weeks cancellation period they would r fund our deposit.

This has not been done and every tim I call the make excuses.
