We stayed here for two nights. The host was really friendly giving us a lot of information and ideas what to do. We booked the big room upstairs which is really awesome. You do have access to the balcony with a beautiful view. The only view negative points:
- Breakfast is provided in Running Rabbit. It is actually a great near-by Cafe. You have 4 options to choose and 2 beverages included, which is sufficient in my view. However I think it would be nice to have the option to have breakfast in the house as the balcony is so nice. (Guests are not allowed to use the kitchen).
-The water on the rooms costs extra. I think it should be included as in most other guesthouses and hotels.
These points are minor though. It is a great place close to good restaurants and the cliff path :)

The whale away is a nice small guesthouse with very nice rooms. The breakfast including hot and cold dishes was fantastic. Parking space is available directly before the house. However the homepage gives the impression, that it is much closer to the sea as it is in reality. From our room booked explicitly including sea view we only could spot a small part of the sea between other houses. There are accommodations offering better locations to the sea and for whale watching in Hermanus than this for the same or even cheaper price. Another drawback was the strict check-out time of 10 am.

Good option in Hermanus, nice breakfast and safe place with free parking. Monica was very friendly and gave us some tips about the place. It was cold, and the heat was not 100% effective, but it was ok. We recommend. :)

We booked a double room that we found had virtually no space for our suitcases with only a back view of a scruffy garden. There was no mirror over the bathroom sink and in order to use a hair dryer we had to look around until we finally found an accessible electrical outlet near the TV. Going out in the evening, we were told that we couldn't return through the lobby (the front door would be locked for security) but we must walk to the back and enter via the garden, which proved to be dark and un-lighted as we bumped into trees and shrubs late at night trying to find the back door and then use the key lock to our room. Breakfast was served in an open area, where we could see the proprietress frying our eggs. How inappropriate was that? Weak coffee from a filter machine was served in French Press beakers, as if we were to believe it was actually French Press coffee. The front "view" was that of a car park, quite unlike what's shown on the website, which depicts the ocean as if it's just our front, but it's nearly a 1/2 K away, beyond the car park and a fence and a lot of asphalt. The pool, if you can call it that, is small, narrow and appeared dirty. Looking around the place, we found that the so-called balcony room was not a private balcony and that anyone could walk out to the balcony and look into the room. While I respect that everyone has to make a living, we found no particular service mentality at this hotel / guest house, yet it had a very deceptive Trip Advisor "award" on the wall, which we felt was NOT deserved at all. Within 5 minutes of checking in, the proprietress was trying to book us for local shark cage dives, whale watching boat trips and into a certain centrally located restaurant, as if she had a commissioned interest in how we spent our money. It was all very suspect and quite tacky. As soon as we could find another lodging, we checked out and only then did we enjoy our stay in the lovely town of Hermanus.

This was absolutely our worst experience in South Africa ( 3 week driving and 3th stay in S A!!)

1.Everyone should be aware of the fact that the text and the pictures on the website are very misleading; this guesthouse is adjacent to a busy road, a bit out of town and the walk into town isn't exactly very pleasant.
The rooms are described as "luxury"; NOT!! they are really small; there is hardly room for a suitcase; poor bedhead light: impossible to read by this light.
But spotless and nice deoration.

I was travelling as a single; this is the only hotel/guesthouse where I had to pay the same amount as a couple, though I used only one of the twin beds, only one set of bed and bath linen, took only one shower etc...
I had to pay as soon as I checked in, not at the departure; this is quite unusual and I never before experienced this.
There are no views at all (except for 1 room on the 1st floor); the so called "garden" is a poor and tiny patch of grass ; the so called "pool" is a dirty small, narrow, dirty puddle next to the parking lot.

2. Manager: never met a manager like this one: unfriendly, harsh, brutal.
According to her we arrived too early (they are very strict and very unflexible in this guesthouse); our room wasn't ready yet; she called out "If the room isn't ready in 5 minutes I'll hit you" on which she burst out in a loud laugh. We didn't think this was funny and were quite shocked.
As said the management is very unflexible; I was travelling as a single with 2 friends; at breakfast we had to sit at separate tables, since these tables were set for 2!!! One has to fill out a form for breakfast next morning; one wonders why, since they serve s th else....
Breakfast time is very strict: very late; what a waste of time; impossible to have an early breakfast. But breakfast is allright: both warm and cold dishes, freshly cooked; coffe is of poor quality.
Conlusion: this guesthouse is FAR too expensive; bad value for money.

Only stayed for one night but it was very memorable, enjoyable. The view to the ocean is fantastic. The house is not far from the town centre, walking distance and safe. The bedrooms are spacious as well the bathrooms. Nice patio and pool area. Visited a few places in South Africa but Hermanus is my favourite town. I would certainly go back and stay in Whale Away Guest House again.

The whole team (Esther,Mandy and Akhona) were very welcoming to my mother and I as I had booked a room for my mother's birthday holiday. Very clean, well kept, beautifully decorated guest house, AND VERY LIGHT ON THE POCKET! we felt very safe and well taken care of. We will most definitely be back with our whole family.

We booked one nights accomodation in this hotel and provided our contact details and had the booking confirmed. After driving all day we were informed that they had cancelled our booking. which they had done without informing us. They provided absolutely no help or advice on how to find alternative accomodation.

Obviously these guys reserve the right to leave you homeless in Hermanus if they get a better (longer?) booking. Not impressed.

Good location but we were given a downstairs room that was quite grubby.....not the quality you expect. Room was a bit shabby, cupboard smelt of mould and damp was on walls. Floors not cleaned well and drawers left with items from previous visitors. Breakfast could be excellent but one day seemed as though it was just heated up as we smelt it being cooked the previous afternoon and was quite soggy in the morning. If the rooms were all the same standard as the communal areas it would be great.
