Spent a night at the Protea George Outeniqua. We were warmly welcomed by the front of house staff who were really kind and helpful. Checked into our room and lugged our bags up a flight of stairs as there was no lift Both of our suitcases were over 30kg so we didn't think it was fair to expect the porter to carry them. The room was nothing special but comfortable with a large bed. It provided everything we needed as all we wanted was a place to spend the night, as we continued our journey. One thing that was frustrating was the fact that the hotel doesn't normally provide dinner (rather a list of restuarants and take aways is shared with guests), but seeing as it was Christmas a buffet was offered. Unfortunately we weren't told ahead of our arrival despite phoning up to share our arrival time, so we ended up having a meal at McDonald's as that was the only place that was open. If we'd have known we would have held out. Check out was friendly. The hotel's location is good and the staff are a credit to the Protea hotel group.

I was very disappointed by the Protea Outeniqua on my last visit. The manager contacted me and I recently stayed there again. There has definitely been an improvement. Good service, clean, and a lot quieter. They have also made arrangements for emergency lighting. Breakfast was great. Perhaps I was too harsh in my previous review? Perhaps they improved by that much? Safe to say that at that price point, you cant go wrong giving it a try. Thank you to the team.

I'm terribly disappointed in this hotel.

I've been staying there for several weeks. A month plus. Paid full rate. No extras included.

First few weeks went fine. I have the tendency to clean my own room wherever I go or am. So the cleaners here, only gave me a fresh towel everyday.

Then they started getting used to me being there so long, I suppose. And there attitude started changing, gradually. At some stage I had to ask for a towel and just to properly clean the basin and toilet. As there's obviously no products for me to do that myself.

So I raised my concern with one of the cleaners. Next day. Nobody greeted me. Rite to the receptionists. The manager knew about this. As I saw her whilst some of the cleaners, combined with other staff members, talked about me and making disrespectful, jokes about me. She laughed. I'm, appalled, shocked and saddened by the fact that they would treat a decent, neat and long staying guest, like myself, in such a manner.

I would never in my life stay there again. I actually should've demanded a refund especially for the last week, when things were worst than ever.

Friendly and helpful in the beginning. Soon changes to disrespectful, rude staff.

Friendly warning!

Bravo to staff and manager of Protea Outeniqua (Marriott) in George. Chantelle went to a lot of trouble to assist us while all staff members were warm and friendly. We enjoyed the clean room, attention to sanitation and complimentary cappuccino! The hotel is in the centre of the lovely, well-maintained city of George, well in reach of the Garden Route attractions.

I was forced to stay in George for 2 weeks as my wife was in a nearby hospital. After some early misgivings I very quickly warmed to this place. It's not a 5 stars nor does it try to be but I give 5 stars for the staff alone. Yes the rooms are a little small and dark and the ambience some what dated but the bed is large and comfortable and the facilities serviceable. Throughout my stay all the staff I came across were friendly and most charming, special mention to Alfred on the front desk but I also enjoyed my daily chats with the breakfast and kitchen staff. If I find myself in George again I will have no hesitation in staying here again. Excellent value.

We arrived during planned electricity load shedding thinking that the hotel would have a generator- but no. No generator, unlike the other Protea in town. Staff explained that to be the reason for 3 star rating.

The hotel should at least have informed us of the load shedding and the fact that they did not have a generator.

Another mistake- grading is not dependent upon having a generator! Hotel was smelling like a closed up gym locker. Bathroom in need of renovation since 1990. Aircon loud, poor sound insulation, can hear your neighbours conversations, tv, alarms, toilet, shower. Not a good place.

Dear Travelbuddy2010 We were so unhappy to read your comments and have desperately been trying to contact you but to no avail. Please, should you receive this response, will you contact us. On investigation we see that you did arrive during load shedding - something we unfortunately have no control over. Generally, the load shedding in our area is sparce and only about 2 and a half hours. Our fellow Protea hotel in George also does not have a generator. The emergency lights in passages come on and we have lighting in public areas to provide enough lighting for guests and staff to move around. We can only assume that whatever smells you are referring to is from the recent refurbishment programme we have just completed eg paint? We do wish we could have discussed your stay directly with you. Please do call us. We have left messages for you. Thanking you.

The hotel is situated close to the airport, railway station and inter-cape bus stop. Rooms were nice and offered decent space.

For some reasons, we were not able to find any deal inclusive of breakfast. Suggest you get a deal which includes breakfast. Paying up for breakfast at the hotel could prove to be expensive.

The hotel is close to the Indian restaurant, "Jewel of India".

Reading the previous reviews on this site... I can only smile. I manage a 3 start guest lodge in the Whale Coast where we are of high standard but if guests only knew what this industry have to put up with (and mainly from people with fanancial stability). The building is not the Michael Angelo no, and the bathrooms maybe a bit small yes, but the breakfast is excellent quality, the staff were friendly, the location is convenient and the linen where spotless and of excellent quality. Other than that, what a WELCOMING surprise when I we checked out the following morning to find my car window cleaned… such a lovely gester! You may not be the best of the best of the best, but you are surely trying and making the best of what you are given! Keep it up Protea Hotel staff in George!

We were stranded as our hotel we booked was under renovation. The staff were so helpful and accommodating that they deserve a top rating. Parking was adequate, either off street or behind the hotel. Room had all the amenities, cost and comfortable. The inclusive breakfast was great with a good choice of items. Freshly prepared eggs with minimal oil, seemed very healthy. Value for money was excellent and we would stay again. Well done crew, as good as it gets at the price b
