On the outskirts of Cape Town, immediately adjacent to one of the most beautiful wine producing areas of South Africa, you will find De Verdwaalde Boer. This dream villa is located in a unique spot in Constantia, with a view of False Bay and the back of the famous Table Mountain. The villa offers an abundance of luxury, perfect privacy and a wide range of modern facilities. The spacious garden contains not only many trees and a veritable rainbow of indigenous flowers but also an authentic vineyard where Sauvignon Blanc grapes are grown. The villa boasts seven bedrooms, each with en suite bathroom, a charming living room, a beautiful kitchen and three fireplaces. The splendid wine cellar is filled with the very best South African wines. Enjoying a real South African barbeque (braai) on the terrace alongside the villa and admiring the constellation-filled sky is one of the most memorable experiences of Africa. In De Verdwaalde Boer you can do this in style and comfort and in an ideal atmosphere. Although you do not sleep in a hotel, nonetheless your bed is made for you each day. This, and much, much more is within easy reach.

We've rented places in Tuscany, New Zealand, Paris, Tokyo and this one took the cake. The grounds were massive with the pool, tennis court, outdoor dining & grill, trellis lounge areas, and mini vineyard. The house itself was nicer than any of the pictures on the internet (usually not the case!) - simple, clean lines with African accents. There's a Sonos music system throughout the house of 7 bedrooms and 7 1/2 bathrooms, a wine cellar in the basement from which we chose (and of course paid for separately) and three fire places in the house (plus heating in each room and bathroom). But what puts this rental over the top is the daily maid service (including laundry - thank you Cynthia) and the managers of the property who stay in a separate apartment attached to the house - Jeroen and Petra. They were indispensable helping us choose wines, restaurants, hiking trails, etc. They were even nice enough to call for pizza delivery one night after a long day of shark cage diving! -- Location is great - easy to drive out to Cape Point, Stellenbosch/Franschoek, Table Mtn. You could even walk to Kirstenbosch Botanical, Constantia Glen and Groot Constantia wineries - although you would probably drive because there are no sidewalks. After seeing the city proper, I was happy we stayed just outside the city instead. --We were two families - a group of 10 over 9 nights and we didn't have enough time to see everything. -- No complaints; it was perfect even in winter and rain - we want to return one day, perhaps in the spring.

We spent three nights here at the start of our honeymoon and couldn't have chosen anywhere more perfect. The service provided by Petra and Jeroen was fantastic - always on hand to make sure that you had everything that you wanted without being imposing. We were even lucky enough to sample Jeroen's homemade Limoncello. Our room was spacious and stylish, with its own Dutch hot tub - fantastic! The property itself was picturesque and the views even more so. We will definitely be going back.

Normally I do not read reviews that have a perfect score. So I decided to give 'Sleep Quality' one star less. I should clarify that this is only due to the fact that the quality of the wines and company led to a hangover on more than one occasion...

I have stayed in 5-star accomodations before and I feel very comfortable in stating that the service of Jeroen and Petra sets De Verdwaalde Boer miles apart from similar priced accomodations. They know the best (value) restaurants, what activities are worthwhile and can arrange for pretty much everything you want. I personnally enjoyed two rounds of golf, some shopping, a helicopter flight and numerous excellent lunches and dinners. Most of these activities or restaurants I would not have chosen based on a Lonely Planet or other tourist guide.

Around the house, breakfast is excellent (and plentifull) and during the day your next cup of coffee or glass of wine is never far away. I really enjoyed the down to earth style in which Jeroen en Petra go about making my stay an experience to remember.

On arrival having negotiated the extremely steep drive ,we were greeted
with can you move your car !
Nice start I moved it 2 feet over to appease mine host !
I was then informed that car parking was limited & when full to park in front of the garage.
The property was impressive. We went to our 5star suite £200 per night
No fridge, No bin, No slippers, No floor covering either side of bed, No bath.
What we did have was someone's old socks in the open wardrobe
I asked to chill some white wine in one of their huge kitchen fridges
I was told No but I could have some ice !
We decided to have red wine instead, I asked to borrow a corkscrew,
was told it could not leave the kitchen
Breakfast: flies all over the food, even though they had covers, they didn't put them back over the food, orange juice & fruit were not replenished when gone !
I asked for a cooked breakfast & toast, the languid hostess manageress
looked at me as if I was from another planet !
When it did come the bacon & tomatoes were stone cold & uncooked.
The following day I requested well done bacon our uninterested hostess said I'll see !
it came back stone cold just as the previous day!
We asked for an outside table as there 2 free & with umbrellas we told they were taken.
Another couple came 20 mins later & sat down at one. with the other still set & vacant.
There were complementary soft drinks in one of the kitchen fridges we went to get one
& sensed they were watching, we took a book to our room, was asked to bring it back !
The final straw: we came in from a lovely day out to find the car park full so I did what I was directed to do & parked in the only available space, in front of the garage next to the managers 4x4.We didn't even make it through the front door ! he came out telling me to move the car !
Big Brother's watching you !
If you require a relaxed & peaceful place to stay this is not the answer.
Regimental & controlling manager,+ partner who are both devoid of people skills.
While settling the bill he went into our now vacant room & upon leaving accused us of stealing some self promotion literature on the B&B LOL ! as if we would want that ?
What he failed to tell us was, are they your old socks still in the wardrobe?

Response from PetraJeroen, Manager at De Verdwaalde Boer
Responded 24 Feb 2015
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, as any feedback from our guests is highly valuable to us. It's unfortunate that in some particular instances one just can't seem to make things right.  We are sorry to hear that despite our very best efforts and intentions, we could not make it right this instance. Which - as you can see from the many 'excellent' feedback from most reviews on this page - is highly unusual.  Regards,  Jeroen & Petra Lamboo

I travel a lot to Cape Town on business and always try to stay in different places to avoid boredom but also to try out the huge array of accommodation available; that may no longer be the case! The 7 bedroom guest house is beautifully decorated, simple but elegant with a quirky twist. The beds are huge, the gardens vast and immaculate and the pool is oh-so inviting you will have to take a dip. The hosts are attentive, knowledgeable and chatty- and always seem to be on hand with a glass of something or a square of chocolate just when you are thinking you might want to be tempted!
The house would be great to rent out for a family or group holiday and would offer you a great base to explore all the delights that are on your doorstep. The only slight negative, which is only tiny, is that there is a little bit of sound that carries through the open plan house- only really noticeable in the morning- but then it just made me want to get up to enjoy breakfast (which was also delicious!)

I am looking forward to my next stay with them!

Even though we have stayed at De Verdwaalde Boer for the second time in two years, we still were amazed by the surroundings, the beautiful room and the enormous breakfast. So making choices becomes difficult. Jeroen and Petra suggested a to rent a (fast, convertible) car and take a drive up to Franschhoek. Turned out to be the best day of the year for me! There are some nice mountain roads that are very enviting to put your foot down and/or enjoy the views. Lunch at the Grand Beach is a must-do in my opinion. Normally I would now enter some things that could be better, but I cannot think of anything.

This perfectly located private guesthouse is just one of those places you would rather like to keep to yourself... Located in beautiful and lush Constantia, you overlook Cape Town on one side (especially amazing at night), while having the mountain range on the other side. With many fantastic wine estates on your doorstep, great restaurants within a few minutes drive, and beautiful hiking trails through the mountains close by, this location is just perfect for those seeking relaxation, combined with splendid food and wine. Petra, Jeroen, Magui and the staff are perfect, warm hosts, and make you feel welcome and relaxed from the moment you step into the beautiful decorated house and fabulous garden. From waking up in the amazing beds and supersoft linnen, reading a book next to the stunning pool, or just enjoying a delicious breakfast with fresh juices out on the deck with spectacular views, De Verdwaalde Boer and its hosts just offer a fantastic holiday experience. A true hidden gem. We are already making plans to comely back!

Dear Jeroen and Petra, your welcome was warm and so was our stay in De Verdwaalde Boer in every aspect!
The location, the house, the room, the view, the garden, I enjoied it all: the breakfast with fresh juice and whatever I wanted, the massage so relaxing and most of all the way you took care of us.
I have good memories, thanks to you and to Magui!
I can absolute recommend this and I myself hope to come back again!

Thanks. Petra, Jeroen and Magui for a fabulous stay! We stayed at De Verdwaalde Boer in December 2015. The location in constantia is great for visiting lots of wineries while your only 15 minutes from town. The service and attention to detail that Petra and Jeroen provide is simply off the planet. I will definitely be back and will recommend this place to anyone.
