I stayed six nights in Cape Town and was looking forward to spend my remaining three nights at a quite hotel outside the city. I liked the property photos online. In the morning I rented a car in the city and drove to the Mowbray property to drop off my luggage. Unfortunately I experienced some car mis-haps on the way. Miss Zilungile welcomed me at the Reception. She was very kind and showed empathy during my moment of distress with the damaged car. I asked if there is someone who is very familiar with cars as I wasn't sure what to do. Then I met Miss Maurren, Housekeeping Supervisor, with whom I discussed the tire damage. We both agreed it would be safest to exchange the car. Miss Zilungile helped me connect with the rental agency and I was going to the airport to get a new car. It was then, that Miss Maurren came with three of her team members, rug and spray in hand to remove the long black rubber mark I had on the white car as well. After a lot of rubbing, the car looked almost like new, if it weren't for the damaged tire. I was overwhelmed by the caring attitude of the employees. The room was absolutely lovely too, with a view of table mountain, but it was foremost the employees who made me feel very comfortable and at home. Thank you for a fantastic stay.

We stayed for 2 nights at the start of our Capetown-Stellenbosch tour. You will need a car or Uber to get to any sights or additional restaurants (except the Wild Fig) from this hotel, and you are about 30-45 minutes from downtown with Capetown rush hour on the major roads if you are planning to use this hotel as you base.

The Wild Fig restaurant next door is great for dinner with a good food selection on the menu, the bar has a limited selection of wraps and sandwiches for a lighter meal if you are looking for this. The breakfast buffet for R230 was well stocked and had a Cook to Order egg station.

The rooms were sized well, beds were very comfortable for sleeping, and this hotel is Very Quiet as there are no major roads or business locations close to it! Our room was recently renovated and currently 1-2 wings of the hotel rooms are under renovation currently (no noise or disruptions to guest while you are there that we experienced).

Staff was very friendly and helpful for any of our questions. I would use this Protea hotel again if I come back to Capetown!

At first I was a bit hesitant on staying at this hotel, as it's outside of Cape Town in a suburb called Mowbray, but I'm so glad I chose it. It's a beautiful hotel with amazing staff like Adrianne. We spent most of our time in Cape Town outside of the city, and by staying here, we got to avoid so much of the traffic. I'd really recommend staying here!

A few years ago, we just loved this little gem of a place, shall I say once upon a time! On arrival you keep on buzzing the gate and no response. Happened twice. Eventually you make use of your hooter to get the attention of reception. Please do not dare ask them why they don’t open the gate, you get told “you did not ring the bell”!
At reception a lady came begging for a warmer blanket for her little one, the more she asked for one, the more the reception lady asked her did she not get a blanket? Quite embarrassing.
The Wild Fig restaurant was very enjoyable.
The Hotel room was beautiful. Sadly it had a terrible bad toilet spray/mouldy bathroom smell, so overwhelming and unbearable that one could not bare the smell for longer than a few seconds. It did not help much as the room was standing closed with no ventilation. One can only imagine how long it’s been like this. After a few minutes more, we decided to leave and cut this bad experience short, and find an alternative place to stay.
On reporting our unsatisfactory experience to management the next day, it became even worse!
After management had enough time to check on all the facts and call me back, the reception manager did not do so. Once again I had to telephone the reception manager, who in turn had this unacceptable tone of arrogance in her voice.
After explaining to her how to check on all the facts, it was evident her lack of experience in this regard.
I asked her for the Hotel manager at 4:20pm in the afternoon, I was told he had already left.
After demanding to speak to the hotel manager, I eventually got a call from him this morning. Obviously he only heard his reception managers version, and already made up his mind how he was going to deal with this. I explained everything over again and asked him to please check all the facts properly before addressing the issue further. He said he would, but don’t hold your breath.
My recommendation: Do not book here, as they do not live up to the standard this prestigious hotel once had!

My family and I wish to thank the breakfast team for making my dad’s birthday very special. The service received by Ronwill, Zininzi, Pamela, Shaniece, Portia, Funiwe and Tabiso was that of true 5* service excellence. Being a hotelier myself it made me very proud to choose the profession I’m in. Well done team! Remain being positive especially during these difficult times. Also a special thanks to Ronwill for arranging my dad’s birthday plate on the very last minute. We will definitely visit again.

The positives: All the staff (reception, breakfast room, cleaning, gardening, security) were extremely friendly. The breakfasts were great and the timings were good. The room was nicely decorated and a generous size with a convenient kitchenette. I didn't mind it being a bit off the beaten track. It felt secure. The historic building is just gorgeous and the common parts are beautifully and tastefully decorated to reflect its history.
Downsides: it was noisy. It is right off 2 motorways and does have double glazing but ours was either defective, or insufficient. The blurb on booking.com said it was air conditioned but ours was not, so we had to choose between a very stuffy, warm room or being bitten my mosquitoes all night (we tried out both experiences!). We also had overhanging branches from a tree that hit against the roof all night which was a bit annoying - and that was with earplugs! Also, I feel the bathrooms could do with updating. But everything was very clean and the bed was very comfortable.
So, a bit of both really.

This is my fourth visit to this beautiful hotel. Pam, David and Faraaz were most welcoming and efficient at the front desk. The rooms are spacious, clean and nicely appointed. The mattress was perfect...really good condition.
Breakfast is full and served buffet style in the old Cape Dutch Manor House. There is a good array of cold and hot. Amanda at the egg and pancake station is warm and friendly. Funiwe, Ashley, Royston and Gail are all super attentive to your breakfast needs.
You will need a car (free parking on site) or you need to uber as it is not near public transport...but is very well located near all the major onramps and so getting anywhere is quick and easy if you're driving.
I love this place. It is my go to whenever I am in Cape Town

Hotel very centrally located in Observatory/Mowbray near the N2 and M5 highways.
Staff very friendly and polite.
Rooms very clean and well furnished. Grounds are very picturesque and well maintained. While the reception and breakfast are in the old farm buildings, the rooms are in a more modern section.
We did not make use of the breakfast kitchen, so cannot make any comment thereon.
Would be 5star but a false fire alarm went off in the middle of the night

The stay went pretty smoothly. Not much to say about the lovely property. Nightmare started after check-out. I'm Marriott Bonvoy Titanium. The stay hasn't posted. I first call the duty manager who told me she would fix the issue. Nothing done! Than I as of today wasted 75 minutes of my time on the phone with Marriott. They call the property. I'm suppose to receive my folio that I never received. Property is supposed to send me a simple email with my two missing stays. Nothing! Just wasting my time big time for something that could have been done smoothly after a 10 minute call to the Protea Mowbray! This is just not serious!

Clean rooms and nice communal areas. The downside for us was the restaurant (Wild Fig, which is lovely!) is closed several nights a week, which means you either need to drive or get a cab/uber to somewhere that serves food in the evening. I just wish the check in staff had told us when we checked in so we could have planned ahead. Otherwise, pretty lovely - I will be coming back soon.
