In a city renowned for hospitality, Derwent House stands out as one of Cape Town's leading boutique guesthouses. Located in the heart of the vibrant Tamboerskloof/Gardens neighbourhood, this small hotel combines historic charm, contemporary Afro-chic style and all mod-cons for a uniquely Capetonian blend of ambience, warmth, and comfort. Our wonderful team completes the picture -- we go the extra mile for you and our guests leave as friends. We love colour and celebrate African design - you'll find it everywhere. But when it comes to the basics - like breakfast, bedding, showers, climate control, Wi-fi or news from home - we don't compromise so you don't have to. At Derwent House, you're steps away from the hustle and buzz of Kloof Street, with its collection of superb restaurants, bars and trendy boutiques--and just a few further to the nightlife hub of Bree and Long Streets. Yet just a short car journey from the Table Mountain cable car, the beaches of Clifton or Camp's Bay, and the V&A Waterfront. There's nowhere more central -- but come and see for yourself. We're waiting for you!

The staff at Derwent House, including Gladys, Patience, and Luca, went above and beyond to ensure my stay was truly memorable. They added numerous special touches that made me feel right at home. During my winter visit, they provided heating blankets, a delicious crockpot soup of the day with crackers, and even cake. The communal refrigerator, always stocked with complimentary items, was a thoughtful addition, and the charming artwork throughout the guesthouse added a personal touch. I also appreciated the convenient laundry services and the meticulously curated tip sheet on daily activities. As a solo female traveler, the staff’s attentiveness and anticipation of my needs were particularly reassuring. Each breakfast was a delightful experience with unique offerings daily; I was especially enamored with the Nutella crepes!

Derwent House shines in Cape Town’s hospitality scene as one of the city’s premier boutique guesthouses. Located in the vibrant Tamboerskloof/Gardens neighborhood, this boutique hotel combines historic charm with contemporary Afro-chic style, creating a uniquely Capetonian atmosphere of warmth and comfort. Security personnel were always discreetly present to open the gates, adding an extra layer of safety. The welcoming environment, along with the kindness of fellow guests, made my stay feel secure and worth every penny.

Where to start?! without doubt, the most exceptional hotel experience we have ever encountered. Derwent House is a real 'home from home' and you are made to feel so wonderfully welcome by Anahid, Luca, Patience and the team from the moment you step through the door.

The rooms are very well appointed, quiet, equipped with everything you could possibly need. The added 'extras' like the turn-down service, the night stand water and the chocolates are lovely touches.

The booking process was easy and communication was faultless as were the many recommendations provided by the hotel for trips and restaurants, all were fantastic.

The hotel itself is beautifully decorated and the food and drink.. well.. let's just say we certainly did not need to eat in between Derwent's delicious breakfast and supper.

The location is great, easy to walk into town (20 mins) and we even walked over to Camps Bay and beyond in less than an hour. Great bars and restaurants are 5/10 minutes walk and you can uber everywhere in the city for all of £2 per journey.

We also cannot thank the team at Derwent enough for making a Christmas and New Years spent away from home so magical, again, all the little extras were so gratefully received and we thoroughly getting to know the other guests (pretty much all of which were returning which says everything you need to know).

We cannot wait to return this Christmas/New Year this year!

Wow, AA195 -- this awesome review really made our day today: great big heartfelt thanks from the entire team 🥰! "Flawless" and "the most exceptional hotel experience [ever]" are accolades we only imagine -- so you've made our dreams come true. Most meaningful is your sincerity of feeling welcome, comfortable and at home with us -- that's truly what we aspire to offer guests. We know that it's not always easy to be away from home for the holidays, so we want to make sure that you're not homesick at all and enjoy a different style of holiday celebration in sunny Cape Town! It was only a pleasure to help with your Christmas and new year plans -- lots of visitors are caught out by how busy Cape Town is at this time of year, so we've learned to keep a few provisional bookings with our neighbourhood favourites just in case . . . Thanks for your detailed feedback on how much you appreciated some of our little touches: we do believe it's the little things that make up the big picture. And Arthi personally thanks you for all your generous compliments about her breakfasts while you were here--so kind and sweet and always very much appreciated by our fabulous team. It was wonderful to see you make friends with our "regular crew" -- we're delighted that you're joining the club! There's no greater endorsement than a return booking and we're looking forward to celebrating again with you this year. Meanwhile, you have all our very best wishes from the whole team for a happy and successful year! Anahid

This was the first property we stayed at during our visit to Cape Town and it was purely based on reviews. We understand why! The property is more quaint than a big hotel but still offers everything you need in a more comfortable setting. It is located in a cute, quiet neighborhood off Kloof St. The property is gated which makes it feel really private and the outside is deceiving! Once you step in, you are surrounded by beautiful, colorful furnishings and art. Tash greeted us and brought us to a little table overlooking the pool. She chatted enthusiastically about her favorite things in the area and gave us a welcome drink which was really nice. The common areas are really pretty and well thought out. The rooms are all in different parts of the property. Ours was more private in a separate building on the second floor. We had a private balcony and patio along with a separate bedroom, living room and kitchenette. It was such a great room! Again, very colorful with wonderful, traditional touches. The location is great and within walking distance of several restaurants (don't miss Black Sheep). We met Luca the following day who gave us some great recommendations for our first full day there. He also offered to take us on a hike up Lions Head on our second full day (for a reasonable fee) which was really helpful. He talked about the history of the area and the different sections of the city as we hiked. We feel fortunate he had time to spend with us. And the hike was really memorable - great views from the top! The breakfasts every morning were way more than we expected. So good! We were grateful for the staff since we would have missed out on some experiences if we hadn't spoken with them. We would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a more "local" place to stay without staying on your own. If you book, remember to book directly through the hotel website. It was very easy and it ensures your dollars all go to the property. :-)

Thanks so much, BeachyKeen15 -- you're the Best! Such detailed and comprehensive feedback on your stay with us--very much appreciated by the whole team 🤗! You've captured the essence of Derwent House on so many levels: a cosy, intimate ambience in a very "local" neighbourhood, yet close to all the amazing natural wonders and sites of interest in Cape Town . . . And then you saw it all from the top of Lion's Head with Luca (well done!). We love our beautiufl city and are really happy to share experience and "insider tips" with guests to help you maximise your time here -- so pleased to hear that you appreciated the tips and advice. And as de facto "decorator-in-chief," I personally thank you for your kind words on the art and decor -- you've noticed our love of colour and local design and it's great to hear that you share our appreciation! Chef Alpha is also very chuffed at your shout-out for his great breakfasts . . . We feel strongly that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and our's is renowned as among the very best in town. Thanks for the accolade! We loved having you with us for your stay and hope to see you again on a future visit to Cape Town. We promise an even-better Derwent House on your next visit! Warm Cape Town greetings from all of us -- and many thanks again for taking the time to share your experience on this platform, Anahid & the Derwent team

We can't say enough about our stay with the Derwent House. When we first booked this hotel, Anahid reached out to offer information on things we should do while visiting Cape Town. When we arrived the team was extremly friendly and welcoming. Luca was so helpful in giving us tips on local markets and connecting us to an affordable driver for our longer distance activities. Nasif was an amazing driver. Our room at the hotel was amazing. It was bright, clean and made us feel like we were at home while on vacation. The staff kept it clean for us each day and left information about events/activities happening for following day that we could check out. The breakfast was great. We loved the night staff they always made sure we went to our rooms with anything we needed. The location of this hotel amazing. Kloof street is just down the street and has a number of great restaurants to check out day or night. We got some great recomendations from the staff at Derwent House and were never disapointed. We had an amazing view of Table Top Mountain during the day and at night. The owners Anahid and Armin are amazing. They treated us like family and gave us amazing winery and food recomendations. This was our favorite place we stayed in Cape Town and will be recomending this hotel to all our friends and family. We can't wait for our next visit. Jason and I Thank you all for everything!

Dear Michelle & Jason, Such a lovely Christmas gift for the whole team to read your wonderful review! Thank you so much for taking the time to post such a detailed report on your experience with us . . . To earn your vote as your "favorite place" is a tremendous accolade and one we treasure with humility and gratitude. It's our mission to try and help guests make the absolute most of their visit to Cape Town by sharing advice, insider tips and general support, so it's great to hear that we achieved this for you. I'm so pleased -- at this very busy time of year -- that we were able to make arrangements for your spontaneous Peninsula tour with Nassief, and to get you into some of our favourite restaurants in the neighbourhood. You're so right: we are very fortunate to have many of the best bars and restaurants in town along Kloof Street at our doorstep--makes our job easier 😉. You two did indeed become part of our Derwent family during your stay. It was really such a pleasure to get to know you and we too look forward to your next visit. We promise you an even better Derwent House when you come back next time -- and we promise to take great care of your friends and family meanwhile! We wish you a wonderful 2023! Warm Cape Town greetings from the whole team, Anahid & Armin

A great stay for four nights at this small (8 room) boutique hotel in the Gardens. This was a beautifully decorated and friendly place with great breakfasts and really helpful staff. And umbrellas you could borrow, which proved super useful during a very wet stay.

The room with a balcony and side view of Table mountain was lovely. Each room is decorated differently - ours was giraffes. Good shower. If you are there in Winter, however, make sure you bring a warm jumper and most places including restaurants can be a bit chilly.

When initialling planning the trip one of the first dilemmas was whether to stay downtown in somewhere bigger, or in a smaller, more personal place.

We made the right choice. The location felt super safe (not that we were overly concerned, but if you just read trip adviser questions you might be…) and was close to some great restaurant’s on Kloof street - the nearest, the Black Sheep about 5 minutes walk. It was also close to the Labia art house cinema, which we went to very often. Ubers were never more than 2 or 3 minutes away. Derwent House does breakfast, afternoon snack and complementary drinks, but doesn’t have a restaurant for lunch or evening food.

Luca, Patience and the entire team did everything in their power to make our family’s stay in Cape Town an absolute joy.

We arrived with SA Airlink having chosen to send our luggage to J’berg instead of Cape Town. After three weeks traveling across Kenya, Rwanda, Botswana and then SA, we had gotten a false sense of security from the care and competency of all the carriers we had used up until that point. As we arrived at Derwent House a bit shell-shocked by having absolutely nothing in hand, Luca met us with sympathy, support, a pot of tea (and maybe a glass of whiskey). He loaned us a phone charger and pointed us towards the local grocery/pharmacy so we could get toothbrushes, etc. with the hope our baggage would arrive the next day. Luka then graciously bird-dogged the airline the next day, tracked our bags, and texted us when they were delivered.

From the quality of breakfast, the cleanliness of the rooms and the kindness of the staff, we cannot recommend Derwent House more strongly.

Fantastic experience, all the staff were exceptionally friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was very nice with lots of choices available.
While the room was the smallest we’d encountered on our trip it was well equipped, clean and because of location was reasonably quiet.
Location was further out of the city but there was a huge selection of cafes, restaurants within walking distance.to venture further afield bolt or Uber are very cheap.
It was 5 minutes by car to table mountain, lions head and signal hill.
Would definitely stay here again.

Dear Ev0841, Many grateful thanks from the whole team for your kind endorsement--we'll hold you to that return promise 😉! We're very fortunate to have some of the very best people in the city/province/country working with us, going the extra mile to help guests make the absolute most of their stay . . . And so pleased that you found your room to your satisfaction; indeed, many guests are surprised that our neighbourhood is so very quiet, given that it's only 1.2 kilometres from the centre of town and just steps away from buzzy Kloof Street, with it's wide variety of cafes, clubs, bars and restaurants. The flip side of quaint charm of our 100-year-old Victorian heritage property is some rigidity in what we are allowed to modify, alter or expand, so we've focused on comfort and practicality in our rooms. It was such a pleasure to host you here with us -- and we're very happy that you made it down Lion's Head safely . . . You did have us worried for a bit! We'll look forward to welcoming you back on that next visit! From all of us at Derwent House, very best wishes, Luca

We stayed at Derwent house for 6 nights and it was absolutely amazing. If you're thinking of booking, you won't regret it!

We had the apartment which sits separately to the hotel but is right next door. It was spacious, clean and beautifully decorated. It has full facilities for self catering and even some eggs provided but there are so many amazing restaurants in close proximity that we never used the kitchen!

We also had full access to the hotel and its facilities (pool, jacuzzi and lounge to relax in!) The hotel itself is so welcoming, clean and calming. It's located right in the centre of Cape Town with a breathtaking view of table mountain and near to the trendy Kloof Street with lots of bars and restaurants.

The free breakfast served at the hotel was delicious. I tried the omelette and my Fiancé had the English breakfast a couple of times but there was also waffles, pancakes, scrambled egg and salmon etc which all looked delicious on other guest's plates! We didn't make use of this but they would provide a packed breakfast if you were heading out for the day before breakfast started at 7.30am.

The best part of our stay was the staff. Every single person was friendly and helpful without being overbearing. They always greeted you with a smile and suggested restaurants and bars, booked restaurants for us, told us where the nearest ATM was, recommended places to visit etc.

Check out is 11am but we had a late flight so they made a room available for us to shower and change etc and stored our luggage which was so nice as meant we could enjoy our last day to the fullest.

They have an honesty bar with a whole variety of soft and alcoholic drinks, which was great to enjoy on the terrace as the sun was setting. I can really recommend the local blend wine and at just 75 rand for a carafe (less than £4) this was an absolute bargain! Another nice little touch is the freshly made cake every afternoon. Again, delicious!

We were collected from the airport and dropped to the airport by a lovely lady called Tania that is an independent taxi service but works a lot with Derwent house. She was there to collect us with a beaming smile and set the tone for the holiday. The hotel staff arranged our pick up time and it was really seamless and stress free.

There's so much more I could say but this is turning into an essay so all I'd say is I'd recommend Derwent house to anyone!

Wow, Brooke M: what an incredible detailed and comprehensive review! Thank you so much--you're amazing! We're over the moon that the apartment suited you so perfectly: all the space, privacy and independence of real city-living, yet with all the comforts and conveniences of an hotel at your fingertips. We were equally delighted that you opted to spend so much time with us at the hotel during your stay. You're right that it's difficult to be motivated to cook when you have some of the very best restaurants in Cape Town just down the road in easy walking distance . . . Especially after you've enjoyed Arthi's legendary breakfast or her sumptuous afternoon tea cakes and pastries 🧁🥧🍰🍮--special thanks for your lovely compliment to the chef for this (she misses you at tea time). So pleased as well that you enjoyed our Honesty bar-another way we try to make you feel at home. We love our wine and our Remhoogte Chronicle blend is one of those very special finds. Many thanks as well for your shout-out to Tania, one of our real service champions at Derwent House. She's been greeting and bidding farewell to our guests for as long as we've existed and ferrying them safely back and forth to the airport, out to the wine lands or Cape Point or other special excursions forever--we're so lucky to have her. Your generous feedback on this platform has made everybody's day today! You have our huge gratitude, sunny greetings and well wishes from the whole team--see you again next time! All the very best, Luca

We cannot say enough positive things about Derwent House - the venue was gorgeous, the bed was comfortable, the staff were extemely welcoming and friendly, the breakfast was delicious, and the location was great (we loved the quick access to nearby hikes as well as great restaurants on Kloof street). This was our first time to South Africa (Africa for that matter) and we were a bit nervous - but the team at the Derwent House made us feel welcomed and at ease from day one; Cape Town is now easily one of our favourite cities. The service at the Derwent Hiuse was truly exceptional from quick email responses (prior to arrival), to eagerness to assist us however they could to make our trip memorable (during our stay), to bending over backwards to arrange for my husbands airbud to be mailed to our next location in SA (after our stay). If you have the chance to stay at Derwent House - do it!

It's just wonderful to hear that we helped "make your trip," PamelaL--that's what we're all about. Grateful thanks for your generous and comprehensive feedback on your very special celebration stay with us . . . Many first-time visitors to South Africa share your hesitancy and slight anxiety about how best to explore the country, getting to know the people and culture while staying safe. We're always delighted when we can help overcome these concerns, let you relax and ensure that you experience the best the Cape Peninsula has to offer. And kudos to you for your courage in abseiling off Table Mountain! Now that takes some nerve! Glad we could help reunite you with the earbuds and hope they made it back safely all the way home. It's truly gratifying to learn that Cape Town is now one of your favourite cities! So we'll expect you back for another celebration -- anniversary, perhaps? There's still so much more to see and do here. Once again, thank you so much for this rave review and recommendation -- we really appreciate it. Sending you both warm Cape Town greetings from the whole team, Anahid

From the moment we entered this unique, stylish and colorful boutique hotel (in a great neighborhood) we knew we had found paradise. Exceptional service from arrival to departure, our stay was relaxing and comfortable. The conscientious owners warmly reached out to us prior to our arrival to share information about the area and ask if we had any specific requests. We arranged for a car and driver for an exploration of the famous wine country which was a highlight of our trip.

The staff was really kind, professional and willing to attend to any request. Luca was particularly helpful and we shared great conversations. The pool was refreshing and the hot tub soothed our souls. Hotel offered a variety of sitting areas for relaxing or enjoying a coffee while reading the local newspapers.

The local artwork, attention to detail and overall design of this elegant hotel creates a memorable atmosphere and we look forward to our next stay.
We arrived to a bottle of champagne in our room which we enjoyed while sitting on our balcony overlooking the pristine pool. The bed was very comfortable, room very clean with all the amenities.

Fresh homemade cakes, sherry and port are complimentary and available from afternoon until late in the evening. Wine and other beverages are available for a nominal fee 24/7. There was even a gin cocktail bar for a few hours in the evening! Dining inside or by the pool, breakfast is a combination of hot local and traditional breakfast offerings (to order) and a scrumptious buffet offering a large selection of delectable food including cheese, fruit, pastries, etc.

If you have the pleasure of visiting Cape Town, South Africa this boutique hotel is a gem!

Hello, we never felt unsafe around the hotel. It's a residential area and the hotel has a security guard outside during the night. The walk from the hotel to the restaurants on Kloof Nek Road and Buitengragt Street is short. And Uber is cheap if you feel unsafe. Best wishes
