This backpackers is only for a certain type of people. If you are open minded, love making conversation and meeting foreign people this place is for you. If you are a heavy sleeper and don't spend your time in your room, then this place is for you. If you like partying or don't mind loud noises, then this place is definitely for you.

The bathroom, kitchen and balcony over looking long street is all shared. If you ever lived in a hostel then you will feel right at home. The bar is where all the backpackers come together and meet each other. In the week I spend there I was fortunate to meet a Namibian, Germand, Canadians, Americans, Brazilians, Saudi Arabians, Maliwians and South Africans of course.

All the staff are great people. Olly, Forest, Sugar and Hans is the people you would mostly see around, they all have a great story and can have a fairly decent conversation.

The problems was non other then the location of the backpackers. Since the backpackers is located on long street, which is party central, the music is loud until closing time for the clubs. I knew about it going in but where I am from clubs close at 2 am not 4. This caused me to sometimes fall asleep after 4 other times I joined in so it was not all bad. To add to it the backpackers does give out earbuds to compensate for the noise.

The backpackers is either to meet other backpackers and socialize, sometimes partying and lastly only to lay your head down for the night.

The most humble place to be at. Great service and assistance.

The location is a bit noisy, but what do you expect, if you sleeping at a place in one of the busiest streets in Cape Town.

Disadvantages.
*A communal toilet.
*No smoking in the rooms-smoking area was quite far from the room I stayed in.
*food not available 24/7

Hi Graham. It was by default that I ended up staying on your charming property and thoroughly revelled in it. Your position on Long Street provides direct access to the happenings below your verandas and at the same time offers a laid back and easy going vibe inside. The bonus is that it's safely on the periphery of the merry mayhem! I will gladly return. Thank you.

My first impression when walking in wasn’t the best. I thought, I have 2 weeks to be here so I tried to be optimistic. When I walked into the bathroom and saw the showers I couldn’t understand how anyone could actually bathe in there. That night the music from down stairs was so loud even with ear plugs in I couldn’t sleep. Needless to say, my two week stay there turned into less than 12 hours when finally getting frustrated from the noise at 12am I got up to find massive roaches crawling into my bags. I packed my things and left.

The hostel is different compering to the others... The staff is the best, they have a nice bar inside, the rooms are good and also the price. The problem is the location, long street is very dangerous and people that come around sometimes are hard to keep close. Try!!

TWO THUMPS UP!!! Read this review. It will answer all your questions.

I write reviews rarely. But my stay at the Carnival Court has compelled me to write of my great experience with the location, the staff, the facilities, and the people who stay there.
I could not have felt more welcomed and pleasantly accommodated throughout my stay in Cape Town. I like to call this backpackers lodge “Hostel Chic.” It was designed with style, love and care. It is a new building, and the cleanliness is reflected in that.

Location: Long Street. PERIOD. It’s the most central part of town. Bars, Clubs, Night life, action, and people, all right at your door step. Each floor has a beautiful view of Table Mountain.

Rates: CHEAP. I did lots of research around town for a hostel. Stopped by many. They offered the best rates for the best accommodations. I did some serious research. You shouldn’t have to after reading this.

Bathroom & Shower & Cleanliness: the Carnival Court is clean. Period. Clean Bathrooms, High Water Pressure, Consistent (and long) hot water. Taking a shower was a joy compared to my amenities at home! That says a lot.

Bed, Noise, etc: Comfy bed, amazingly very little noise. Surprisingly Quiet.

The Bar: Packed, a perfect combination of locals, travelers, all within a hello from being coming good friends and companions on a trip. It wouldn’t be a surprise to meet someone special and invite them to your room after a few drinks at the bar… Televisions to watch during sporting matches. Pool Table, Fooze Ball, Great music & soundsystem. Access to Balcony. Perfect.

Security: Not a concern. Not one bit. Rooms locked very well. Sleazy people do not stay here. Felt very safe. They insisted I keep my passport in their safe. Not because of legal reasons, just because they care about you and want to make your trip worry free.

Food: DELICIOUS!!! Breakfast Lunch and Dinner. The Chefs make the food with love and check to see whether you enjoyed it. The food is approached as a passion, not as a money making tool.

Side note: I came to Capetown and stayed with my hometown friends for my first few nights. After my friends left, I wasn’t sure whether or not I wanted to continue my stay in Capetown. I knew no one and had no place to stay. The idea of a hostel or “back packers lodge” did not seem ideal. I could not have been more wrong. After walking into Carnival Court, my stay in Cape Town got better every minute. I have met so many people that were so willing to experience Cape Town with me. This couldn’t have been possible if I had stayed at a hotel. Staying at Carnival Court, being able to stop for a casual drink downstairs, having a friendly, genuine chat with the staff, and offering me sound suggestions and recommendations for my stay is why I recommend Carnival Court so highly. I wish I could extend my stay. From my interactions with the staff Fatima, Bardin, Devon, Trevor and of course the charming manager Charl, the great Rates, the clean Facilities, the social environment, and friendly tenants, I have concluded: Best place to stay in Cape Town.

At first I was a little worried how the stay would end up due to so many reviews saying that its all party and noicy but i ended up being happily surpriced. Sure the music was a bit loud some evenings but nothing to worry about. The single room was basic with a bed and a sink, all I really needed. The backpackers is very central, walking distance to the waterfromt. Supermarket and shopping center very close by. Enrico at the reception gets an extra point and a massive thank you from me, so helpful with loads of knowledge and ideas how to spend the days... The balcony was a plus with nice views of Long street and cheap cold beer on top of it. Had a brilliant stay.

Stayed here November of 2007... was clean and functional. The male staff in the office were really friendly, the female staff not so much. Really good location though and it did always feel safe, a rare thing for South Africa. The only major issue was the bar downstairs that played live music late into the night basically every night... it can be heard from every room in the place and I was unfortunately in the room right next to the bar. Horrendous, even with ear plugs... do not plan on being able to sleep much here.

The staff are fantastic. During my stay they installed wifi throughout the whole building. The beds and pillow are comfortable. Due to the location music could be heard until 3am most days of the week but they provide ear plugs.

This is a fantastic hostel right in the centre of Cape Town with a fantastic atmosphere and amazing staff. Positioned in the heart of the nightlife on Long Street this is a perfect location if you are looking to party while in Cape Town. It's location allows safe and easy access to all bars and clubs on the street and the staff are more than willing to advise on the best places to go both during the day and into the night. Don't expect to get much sleep before the bars close though as the music from the bar opposite is very loud.
