Alta Bay, located in Higgovale, the most up-market suburb of the City Bowl, is set high on the slopes of Table Mountain, with beautiful views over Table Bay and the City, yet only 3 km away from most of Cape Town's attractions including the Waterfront, beaches and within walking distance (1 km) of Kloof Street with its many restaurants and coffee shops. Surrounded by a lush native garden, Alta Bay combines understated luxury and urban chic with a laid-back and retreat atmosphere. Alta Bay, previously a 5-star boutique hotel has 5 years ago (Oct 2011) been converted into a 4-star self-catering Guest House with 3 large luxury units. Each unit has a separate entrance, a fully equipped kitchen (or kitchenette), a private outside terrace and offers all the 5-star facilities. This Tuscan house is built on separate levels with a great sense of space and light throughout and is designed in a contemporary style with bespoke furniture handcrafted locally. The Loft (70 m²) and the Bay Suite (42 m²) offer spectacular views of the sea and city while the Garden Room (28 m²) has the benefit of the shaded lush garden. The Loft has a bedroom on the mezzanine floor, a bathroom with bath & shower and a sleeper couch which can accommodate a 3rd adult or 2 children. On arrival, there will be cereals, coffee, tea, bottled water and milk in your room. For guests who want to have breakfast outside, there is a large variety of restaurants and snack bars within walking distance (1 km). We suggest our guests to have their own transport during their stay in Cape Town. Alta Bay is located high on the slopes of Table Mountain. Having their own transport car will give them the flexibility to explore the region. Kloof Street with its' many restaurants is only 1 km away, which is an easy walk downhill. However, to come back is much harder. If driving left is a problem, taxis (including Uber) are easily available.

Our standard room in the bottom garden has a very jungle-like feel. You can even hear the owls and the different birds in the trees. No sea or city views from our garden room as you have green all around you. Yet, you are within walking distance of restaurants. From the pool area, you have views of Devils Peak which is nice when having sundowners. Uber is easily accessible from this guest house and anywhere else in the city. It’s convenient that they have a guest bathroom available to have a shower before late flights. We want to thank the entire staff for a wonderful time. To summarize, our stay was comfortable from start to finish and will live long in the memory. Thank you. We can't wait to visit again!

I had an amazing and relaxing stay at Stephan and Beulah's place. The studio is immaculate and very comfortable with everything you need. Refreshing jump in little private pool in the morning is so unique let alone the nature and well-maintained garden which is like an oasis of peace.
The hosts are very helpful and friendly and I will definitely come back on my next visit to Cape Town.

We stayed at Alta Bay in early Dec 2006 for a week. We were coming from an absolutely amazing stay at a lodge in Kruger, and were thinking "well, how can Cape Town compare to a first time safari?".

Well, Alta Bay made a nice start of it, greeting us personally and escorting us to the home-style lounge where you can listen to music, serve yourself from the open bar or enjoy some tea or coffee from the kitchen, we felt welcome immediately. The rooms themselves are decorated more as a home than as a hotel, although all of the thoughtful amenities you expect are there as well. One nice touch is that there is a small LCD TV with DVD player in which the staff insert new music every day, left playing quietly for you when you return from your daily travels. Another is the smiling service from the cooks and serving staff accompanying the delicious breakfast - a great way to start your day.

After de-compressing for a day in the comfortable Alta Bay gardens and lounge, we set out to explore the town. We immediately fell in love with Cape Town and surrounding areas - largely due to the wonderful guidance from Veona and Ariel at Alta Bay.

They recommended and reserved restaurants for us every day of our stay. We are vegetarians, and were surprised that every restaurant we went to had been advised of our preference and several had prepared special dishes for us. Several stand out restaurants were Balduccis (touristy, at the Waterfront, but surprisingly great food, atmosphere and service), 95 (a bit snooty, but comfortable environment and cutting edge great tasting food), 48 (owner/chef Serge is funny, whether you laugh with or at him, and again great food) and Portobello (a very unassuming vegetarian place on long street with smiling personal service and some of the best food we've tasted in a long time).

After discussing the kind of activities we personally enjoy, Veona and Ariel helped us plan our days. As a result, we didn't waste a lot of time seeing things just because everyone else likes to go there, and got to explore a mixture of 'touristy' and 'resident' attractions. One accidental adventure I would highly recommend - since we were still on the 5am wake up schedule from the safari, one morning we left at 6am and drove a route through Camp's Bay, Hout's Bay, Chapman's Peak and SimonsTown almost to Cape Point, then back through Constantia to Cape Town. It is a beautiful drive, and at that time of the morning there is no one else on the road except the early rising cyclists and the cute penguins on the rock.

Each afternoon or evening when we would return from our adventures, if we saw Veona or Ariel they would ask us how our day was, and make interesting suggestions for us to consider for the next day. For first time visitors this extra service and guidance was a godsend - although I would hasten to add that they are not at all intrusive. If you want a romantic private/secluded stay at Alta Bay you can do that just as easily, as was the case with two sets of newly weds who were there at the same time as us.

Well done, Ariel. We would definitely stay at Alta Bay again during our next trip to Cape Town.

We only stayed for one night at the Alta Bay and it wasn't enough!
Great spot high up above Cape Town central and lovely views of the sea; the acomodation was of a particulary high standard. The attention to detail was excellent with information being personalised from just the briefest of conversations.
Easy taxi journey into town for dinner and a lovely breakfast on the terrace.
It's not a cheap place to stay but worth every penny!

We found Alta Bay on the web and were so glad we chose to stay here. We were late arriving but the manager, Veona made us feel so welcome immediately. She offered us drinks which arrived within minutes. She was extremely helpful in giving us recommendations for places to eat and things to do.

What surprised us most was the ambience at this place. We have never stayed at any place quite like it. It is so quiet and intimate. We felt like we were staying in a very posh house, not a hotel. The rooms are very well appointed and the bathroom very nice. We received a personalised note from Veona at the end of each day, it was waiting for us when we got back after a full day of sightseeing. The breakfast spread was very substantial and service was always impeccable.

Even though Alta Bay is located five minutes away from the city centre, getting around was easy. It was really no hassle at all reaching all the places we wanted to get to.

We would definitely stay here again if we were so fortunate to be able to do so. We absolutely loved our stay here and would recommend it to anyone seeking luxury, tranquility and high standards at a reasonable price.

Gorgeous boutique hotel experience - great location and a beautiful setting. The rooms are large with great en-suite bathrooms, and furnished to be both comfortable and stylish. Staff were attentive and very helpful - especially the manager who helped us with restaurant recommendations and bookings. I would highly recommend Alta Bay to anyone who wants a special experience of Cape Town.

We stayed two short nights at Alta Bay in early January 2007. The property is located in a very fancy neighborhood of Cape Town, about a 5-10 minute drive from the Waterfront and city bowl. The neighborhood seems very quiet and safe. We walked around a bit to see the gorgeous neighboring houses. The hotel additionally has a night guard as well.

The hotel itself is immaculately clean. We stayed in the Garden Room and recommend it. The rooms are very large, the beds are real king sized beds and very comfortable. All towels and sheets are high quality, soft and fluffy. The room we stayed in had a very large tub and a separate rain shower which was great. It was stocked with very high quality soaps. The room also had ample storage area and a safe, two chairs, a desk and a nice flat screen TV. The grounds of the hotel are superb. The view of Cape Town is amazing, the pool is great. The hotel has a nice bar with snacks and alcohol that guests can take at their pleasure.

The staff is very friendly. They are constantly asking if you need anything, and are extremely helpful.

The cooked breakfast is very nice. Lots of fruit and meats, fresh cooked biscuits/croissants and fresh cooked eggs and bacon, etc.

The guesthouse also has a 4 car garage which guests can use to park their cars.

I highly recommend the hotel. We checked out a bunch of other places in Cape Town and they can't compare.

Alta Bay is a wonderful find. Tucked away in the trees, the hotel is quiet and private, but close enough to town at all times of day and night. The staff are very attentive and friendly, without being intrusive and, combined with the airy decor of the hotel itself, it felt as though we were guests of a discrete aristocrat, rather than a hotel.

We had a wonderful room, with a private verandah with views over the bay. Bathroom was large and airy; bed was large and comfortable.

Overall a very calm and lovely place to stay.

Entering Alta Bay is like getting in an Oasis surrounded by lush greenery and tranquility. The place is in the perfect location near Table Mountain, the trail head to Signal Hill and not too far from restaurants. Since I did not have a car, I explored the neighborhood on foot.

I stayed in the Garden Room, a real treasure, for 2 nights. The place is very modern, tastefully decorated and cozy all at the same time. My room had a micro kitchen and all the necessary items to make hot tea and fresh coffee. Internet access worked like a charm. If I had had more time, I would have loved to just hang out on the deck, taking in the views of Table Mountain, the Lion head and enjoying the garden.

The owners are absolutely amazing at making sure that you have a wonderful time in Cape Town. When I failed to get a booking for a 1/2 day Tour to Cape Point they were able to do it on my behalf within minutes. If I return to Cape Town, I will certainly stay @ Alta Bay. If you are planning a trip to Cape Town, you should definitely consider staying @ with Alta Bay.

We booked our short holiday at the Alta bay Hotel in Capetown after reading a very positive article in 'Red' magazine. Having never been to South Africa before, we didn't know what to expect at all and were so happy when we arrived at the hotel. We were made to feel completely at home to the extent that it felt like staying in our own house in the shadow of Table Mountain on the outskirts of Capetown. The furnishings and decor are exactly as we would have chosen them and all locally sourced and of super quality. The management and staff were on hand all of the time to give advice and service, but in a quiet and efficient manner and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. We will for sure stay at the Alta Bay again in the future and we would recommend this fantastic hidden gem to anyone with confidence.
